Research group NPD Group released a new report claiming that Android-based phones outsold the iPhone in the U.S. for the first time last quarter. Based on unit sales to consumers during Q1, the Android operating system moved into second position with 28% of the U.S. market behind RIM’s OS (36%) and ahead of Apple’s OS (21%). Verizon Wireless’ buy-one get-one promotion, recently expanded beyond RIM devices to include Android handsets, helped Android pull ahead.
Financial information firm Thomson Reuters is introducing a new financial video service on Tuesday to allow traders, research analysts, banks and brokers to communicate with clients via secure video podcasts. “Reuters Insider” will feature some 3,000 new videos each week including original content and syndicated videos from partners such as CNBC, per paidcontent. Videos will be fully indexed and searchable for paying Thomson Reuters subscribers and accessible online or via iPhone or BlackBerry applications.
In an effort to drive home its convergence theme this year, the NCTA announced that each of the three General Sessions at this week’s Cable Show 2010 will be streamed live online. General Session video feeds also will be archived at thecableshow.com.
The Cannes Film Market will screen about 65 films in 3D this year, most of which originate from outside the U.S. from places such as Latin America, Europe and Asia, per Screen Daily.
Remember the Marvel Team Up comics? ABC Daytime is launching a series of “What If” webisodes on abc.com and soapnet.com in July that answer the question, “What would happen if two characters from different soaps ran into each other, what would they say?” Edited versions of the 10-part series will also air on ABC Daytime and SOAPnet.
PBS’s dedicated preschooler channel Sprout announced it will launch an 24-hour HD channel in Sept.
Emerging cable network The Africa Channel will also launch an HD feed on Aug. 1.
FoxSports.com introduced a new hourly online video report dubbed Fox Sports Flash hosted by sportswriter/sportscaster Barry LeBrock and sportscaster Jill Arrington, notes The Wrap.
FarmVille developer Zynga, which generates revenue by allowing users to buy virtual gifts using Facebook Credits and keeping 30% of the proceeds, is looking to expand to other platforms so that it won’t be so dependent on Facebook for its revenue, per IndustryGamers. The start-up filed documents last week authorizing it to sell shares that pegged Zynga’s value at roughly $4.6 billion.
Alloy Digital has renewed its partnership with LG Mobile to sponsor a second season of the scripted web series “Haute & Bothered,” centered around competitions at Manhattan Fashion Institute’s Design Studio. The show was developed by Allow Media + Marketing and UTA Online, the broadband division of the United Talent Agency, and racked up over 9 million views across Allow Digital Network sites such as Teen.com, according to the company.
WPP Group’s Millward Brown is teaming with Tivo to offer brands insights into viewing and purchasing habits. Custom consumer segmentation information from Millward Brown will be paired with second-by-second Power||Watch data collected by TiVo to help analyze which marketing messages perform best among specific audience demographics. Brands will be able to ask proprietary sets of questions to the 35k member Power||Watch panel.
Forward-looking advertisers and agencies are developing ads for Apple‘s iPad as much to reach early influencers as to generate buzz, according to a round up in the WSJ. Individual apps such as P&G’s “Hello Baby” Pampers app, which helps track the development of new born babies, are the quickest way onto the platform but simply repurposing an existing iPhone app is rarely effective because screen size, resolution and feature sets differ greatly.
N.Y. area MSO Cablevision announced that it is now delivering more than two dozen interactive channels across its entire 3 million customer digital customer base using ActiveVideo Networks‘ CloudTV platform. A personalized menu offers access to hyper-local sports and news, advertising showcases, and mosaic kids, sports and news programming. Producers such as MSG Varsity Interactive and News12 Interactive can utilize Cablevision’s Content Developer’s Kit (CDK) to develop web-based content and deliver it to standards-based set-tops via a single MPEG stream.
Gannett Co. signed a deal with Andover, MA.-based Weather Services International Corp. (WSI) to adopt is weathercast HD format enhancements in 17 of its 19 markets. Gannett is also launching WSI’s mapping solution on its stations’ locally-branded web sites.
Ensequence has entered partnerships with interactive application streamer provider Softel, streamer provider S & T and broadcast automation vendor VDS to provide a single-source iTV platform for television service providers and programmers.
Performing rights organization SESAC announced a partnership with TuneSat calling for TuneSat’s technology to detect musical performances of the SESAC repertory used in audio-visual programs and monitored across TuneSat’s network of 110 national broadcast and cable channels. The audio fingerprinting technology is used to protect copyrights of musicians, songwriters and publishers.
A majority of viewers of live television do not leave the room or change the channel when the TV program they’re watching goes to commercial, according to new findings from the Video Consumer Mapping (VCM) study originally conducted by researchers from Ball State University and Sequent Partners in 2008 and sponsored by the Council for Research Excellence (CRE). New data mining efforts found that:
- TV spots and program promotions reach 85% of adults daily with viewers seeing 26 promotional breaks daily, at an average length of 2 minutes and 46 seconds per break
- 86% of viewers remain watching live TV during the commercials; 11% of viewers change channels during the four minutes of TV programming before the commercial break; only 14% change channels during commercials; and 13% change channels in the four-minute period after programming returns
- 55% of viewers were found to be engaged solely with media – led largely by live TV viewing – during the two minutes of TV programming prior to commercial breaks, with the number actually growing to 56% following onset of a commercial
- Multitasking was found to accompany about 45% of all media use. Concurrent activities are led by “care of another,” at 12% in the two minutes prior to and during commercial breaks; and “meal preparation,” at 8% in both cases
Google‘s heavily touted Nexus One handset has suddenly become a pariah among carriers as Sprint announced it will no longer sell the device. Sprint will instead focus its efforts on the upcoming Evo 4G, another HTC device powered by Google’s Android mobile OS capable of utilizing both 3G and 4G signals. Sprint is the second carrier to drop the device after Verizon refused to make it available last month. T-Mobile is now the only carrier to offer a plan for the phone.
Tom Gleeson, VP/Digital Media for ESPN International will expand his responsibilities beyond Europe, the Middle East and Africa to include oversight of all ESPN digital media efforts outside of the U.S. This includes oversight of internet, mobile and broadband businesses in Latin America and the Asia/Pacific Rim. Tom will remain based in London and report to Russell Wolff, EVP and Managing Director, ESPN International.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau has opened up a new a San Francisco office and put Steve Sullivan, VP/Supply Chain and Revenue Solutions, in charge to run it. Steve joins from Microsoft where he served as Senior Program Manager, Ad Security within Microsoft’s Online Services Division.
Online video platform Ooyala has hired Scott Smith as SVP/Field Operations overseeing the company’s worldwide sales and field operations teams.
Private investment bank Berenson & Company had tapped Lisbeth Barron as Managing Director and Head of its media, entertainment and leisure advisory practice.
Location-based social networking service Foursquare continues to be the new favorite among the trend-conscious tech crowd, recently signing up its 1 millionth user and registering its 40 millionth “check in.” The platform’s success has media publishers trying to figure out how to best capitalize on the trend. (Facebook is reportedly working on a geolocation service of its own, allowing users to share their location with friends.) There are other existing tools out there that allow users to check in to earn loyalty points and the like. Internet video publisher Revision3 has struck a new partnership with Bazaar Lab’s Miso iPhone app to add a similar functionality for viewers. Users watching one of Revision3’s shows can “check in” via Miso to alert friends to what they’re watching and unlock badges that essentially profile your tastes. Revision3 will also be giving away a prize every week for the next 10 weeks to Miso users who have earned one of the badges.
