Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/06/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Yahoo! CEO Scott Thompson is planning massive structural changes to the company, including “layoffs that are likely to number in the thousands,” according to AllThingsD. An announcement detailing the changes could come by the end of this month. The changes will cover Yahoo!’s products group, as well as research, marketing, public relations and any other business area that has been underperforming or is at best marginal to the company. Thompson recently hired Boston Consulting Group to help Yahoo!’s growth efforts, according to the report. In an emailed statement, a Yahoo! spokesperson said, “As we have indicated, our leadership is engaged in a process that will generate significant strategic change at Yahoo!, but final decisions have not been made at this point.”
Ovation, a multiplatform network focused toward art, artists and “artistic storytelling,” has launched its VOD service on Comcast’s Xfinity On Demand in markets across the U.S., including Boston, San Francisco and Atlanta. The network says it will expand Ovation On Demand’s reach to more than 25 million U.S. households. Programming currently available on the VOD service includes exclusive documentaries, specials and series, as well as interviews with actors and filmmakers such as George Clooney, Seth Rogen, Alexander Payne, Werner Herzog and Quentin Tarantino.
Almost 70 videos, including full-length episodes, of Disney Channel TV shows are now available for free on YouTube, reports AllThingsD. It’s the result of pact between the two companies that was signed last November, which also included the production of original videos that Disney would create specifically for YouTube, as well as allowing the video site to publish some user-generated content featuring Disney characters.
Solve Media has announced the launch of Pre-Roll Insurance, an expansion of its performance-based brand advertising platform that aims to protect advertisers from the issue of skipped pre-roll advertisements, but at the same time provides users with more control over their online ad experience. The technology is similar to Solve’s CAPTCHA-based type-in advertising; Pre-Roll Insurance will prompt users to enter a brand’s tag-line or message in order to skip an ad and go directly to the video they want to watch. This way, the company says it will ensure brand lift as consumers won’t be as likely to zone out during pre-roll ads or ignore the ad completely by opening up another browser window; something 52.6% and 47.4% of consumers do, respectively, according to a study Solve Media conducted with comScore. Not lost in any of this is the notion that such a technology can engender goodwill among consumers; something that can benefit not just the brand running the ad, but the publisher site on which the ad is delivered.
Kantar Shopcom, the data integration, analytics and insights firm launched by Kantar Retail last year, has unveiled its own website. It’s the second phase of the firm’s business development initiative, which includes the integration of online purchase behavior data into the Shopcom Data Co-op and the establishment of a presence outside of the U.S. The website will showcase the company’s category and brand coverage within the CPG, retail, entertainment and services sectors; profile its commercial partners; and offer case studies conducted for clients. The Kantar Shopcom Data Co-op is a purchasable database of over 231 million U.S. consumers’ shopping behaviors within the aforementioned sectors. Kantar says the firm connects this data with media consumption and brand attitudes data to create a more holistic view of audiences in order to build more effective brand communication, as well as more powerful brand-consumer relationships.
Intergi Entertainment, an online ad agency that delivers tailored ad campaigns for advertisers and publishers that want to reach online gamers, has been ranked by comScore as the top digital outlet in the U.S., Germany and Australia for gaming information. Intergi powers ad campaigns that can reach an estimated 150 million unique users worldwide. Last year, the company launched Playwire, a video platform designed specifically for mid-tail and long-tail content publishers.
Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has acquired California-based mobile ad solutions firm Amobee for $321 million in an effort to expand further into the mobile ad business. The company believes mobile advertising has potential for significant growth, projecting worldwide mobile ad revenue to reach $7 billion in 2012 and $20 billion by 2015. The acquisition is expected to close by June, and new products will be rolled out within a year. The company also announced a new organizational structure that will divide its business into three units: consumer, digital services and IT for large business and government customers. SingTel has nearly 434 million customers spanning 25 countries, including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines and Thailand.
TV Guide has purchased Fav.tv, a San Francisco-based social TV start-up, for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition is strictly a talent hire; two Fav.tv engineers will be joining TV Guide to work on its mobile offerings. The Fav.tv web and mobile service will be shut down in the coming weeks. The start-up has already started to encourage its users to sign up for TV Guide’s Watchlist service, which allows users to create their own personalized programming guide.
While Facebook’s U.S. user growth rate is slowing down, Twitter’s is rising, says eMarketer. Citing the likelihood of U.S. Facebook usage hitting some sort of plateau, eMarketer estimates that the social network’s growth rate rose only 13.4% in 2011, down from the 38.6% Facebook witnessed in 2010. eMarketer expects the percentage to dip into the single digits in 2012. In comparison, eMarketer finds that Twitter’s growth in users hit 31.9% in 2011, compared to 23.5% in 2010. The estimate does expect Twitter’s growth rates to fall as well; however, they will still remain about four times that of Facebook’s rate in 2014. These estimations from eMarketer are largely due to the relatively small size of Twitter when compared to the behemoth that is Facebook, which boasted almost 133 million U.S. users at the end of 2011 (which is expected to surpass 150 million by 2014). In comparison, Twitter’s U.S. user base stood at 24 million at the end of 2011 (expected to reach 37.6 million by 2014).
Google’s mobile ad revenue will surpass $4.5 billion in 2012, forecasts Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster in a new report, per eWeek. Noting Google SVP of mobile and digital content Andy Rubin’s announcement at Mobile World Congress that the company was seeing 850,000 Android activations each day, with there being around 300 million Android smartphones in the market, Munster said mobile could hold down 10% of Google’s gross sales in 2012, up from 7% in 2011. In fact, he also believes 50% of Google’s total mobile sales in 2012 will come from Android devices, which would be up from 30% in 2011.
USA TODAY has unveiled a new app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Enhancements include simplified navigation, as well as features such as new photo galleries, bigger photos, more videos in articles, pinch and zoom weather mapping and a detailed forecast page with information on up to 10 locations. The app also taps the VoiceOver functionality on iPhones to provide support for the visually impaired. It’s available for free.
The CMT INSIDER app has debuted on the iPad. Now available for free on all iOS and Android devices, the app offers country music news; audio clips from Rhapsody to help users find their favorite songs; videos from CMT shows such as Top 20 Countdown; other video content; photo galleries; and even in-app access to the Twitter feeds of top country music artists and CMT on-air talent. The iPad app is being launched in conjunction with the world premiere of Marlee Scott’s new music video for her song, “Train Wreck.”
Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai is leaving, announcing via blog post that March will be his last month working at the company. “Going forward, I’m going to continue to be connected to the company: I’m on the board, I’ll still be advising and I’m obviously going to be the single most vocal user,” he wrote, also adding that, while he doesn’t know what his next step will be, it will likely be in the entrepreneurial capacity.
Tom Karrat has joined comScore as the company’s new President of Global Marketing and Media Solutions. At the newly created position, Karrat will be responsible for developing comScore’s sales and go-to-market strategies and will report directly to CEO Dr. Magid Abraham.
Univision Radio has appointed Evan Harrison to the position of Executive Vice President, Content and Entertainment. He will be charged with strengthening Univision Radio’s programming and growing its audience share through new content initiatives on digital platforms, live event integration, mobile marketing and “other non-traditional media.” Based out of New York, Harrison will report to Jose Valle, president of Univision Radio.
CNET has announced that Danny Sullivan, the current editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, will join the website as Contributing Columnist. Through a new blog that is launching today, titled “Common Sense Tech,” CNET says Sullivan will cover the convergence of tech products and web services for a consumer-focused audience.
