Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  And a reminder, around 9am this morning you’ll receive our Upfront 2011: The Kids Upfront – Cautiously Optimistic … but Questions Remain special edition written by Daisy Whitney.  Keep an eye out for it!

Disney Publishing Worldwide (DPW) builds its US magazine business with the addition of a group of new kid-targeted magazine titles.  The first new title will be Phineas and Ferb, a bi-monthly magazine (each issue 52-pages) available at retailers ($4.99/issue) and via subscription ($23.95/annual), and will then debut three special interest publications featuring content based on Marvel and Disney-Pixar movies.  In April, DPW will release Thor, followed later in 2011 with the launch of Cars 2 and Captain America. Each will be a stand-alone publication available at retail ($9.99/each).  Cars magazine, a subscription-based monthly, will debut in fall 2011 and will feature characters from the first Cars movie as well as the upcoming Cars 2 movie (releasing June 24, 2011).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Wizard Hat Productions is producing a preschool TV show based on the Chicken, Pig, Cow book series by Ruth Ohi and published by Annick Press. The preschool animated series will feature the humorous adventures of a trio of animals and the importance of friendship, working together and accepting their differences.  Chicken, Pig, Cow is the first of four books in the series.

Twentieth Century Fox picks up the movie rights to the forthcoming young adult book Shatter Me, the first book in a trilogy by Tahereh Mafi (she’s just 23), per VarietyHarperTeen, an imprint of HarperCollins Children’s Books, will publish the Shatter Me on November 15, 2011.  Set in a dystopian world, Shatter Me is a romantic thriller that revolves around Juliette (17) who has the ability to kill people with her touch, and the power to save her world.  Foreign rights to the book have been acquired in 13 countries including, Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia, Sweden, and Turkey.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Moonscoop gets a second season pick-up for the animated paper cutout series Ava Riko Teo.  Set to deliver in Q1 2012, the second season of the series will include 39×7 new episodes.  Ava Riko Teo is a co-production between Moonscoop and Korea’s Character Plan and EBS (Korea) in association with Seoul Animation Center, and with the participation of France Television.  The first season of Ava Riko Teo aired in 170 territories.  The Ava Riko Teo ( www.avarikoteo.com ) website is co-produced by Moonscoop with EBS and France 5.

Disney XD debuts season two of its animated series Kick Buttowski  Suburban Daredevil on Saturday, April 30, at 8:30a, with an episode featuring a guest appearance by the NBA’s Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic center).  Season two will also include a guest appearance by Emmanuelle Chriqui (Entourage), Tony Hawk, Ed O’Neill, Will Forte, Rico Rodriguez, Debbie Reynolds, and Jay Harris.  In support of the new season, DisneyXD.com ( www.disneyxd.com ) will launch the new series related game, Kick Buttowski: Wreckreation Rift Demolition Derby, on Tuesday, April 5.  ON Saturday, April 9, the site will invite kids to customize the Disney XD logo with various Kick Buttowski graphics, colors and backgrounds.  Kick Buttowski  Suburban Daredevil was created by Sandro Corsaro, who is also executive-producer, with Chris Savino serving as producer and director. The series is a production of Disney Television Animation.

Among the 100+ hours of new programming that Target Entertainment will launch at MIPTV next month will be the new kids animated series The Abadas (52×11).  The interactive series is based on the magical world of a pop-up book, and features themes including language, co-playing and independence through humor, song and dance.  The Abadas series is produced by Dinamo Productions for Cbeebies, S4C (Wales), BBC Alba (UK), and RTE (Ireland) Kids.

Portfolio International heads to MIPTV next month where it will launch its newly acquired animated short-form series Jobi’s Room (52×1).  Produced by Brazil’s 2D Lab and targeted to K6-11, Jobi’s Room follows the humorous and fact-filled adventures of Jobi (10) and his best pal Oscar (a talking frog).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Skechers Entertainment, a division footwear company Skechers USA, launches a new worldwide licensing campaign that will be headed by Paul Flett, SVP/Global Licensing, Skechers.  The initial properties helping fuel the new effort is Zevo-3 ( www.zevo-3.com ), the first originally produced animated TV series from Skechers Entertainment that debuted on Nicktoons in fall 2010, and the upcoming direct-to-DVD animated movie Twinkle Toes ( www.twinkletoesusa.com ), which is based on the girl-targeted Skechers footwear line.  The new licensing initiative will Skechers Entertainment develop licensing partnerships in all categories, while the company also furthers its development and production slate under Kristen Van Cott, SVP/Creative Development.

Scholastic Media and Taco Bell will launch a new in-restaurant promotion feature The 39 Clues ( www.the39clues.com ) book series and brand May 17-June 23, 2011.  Throughout the promotion Taco Bell restaurants nationwide will offer kids one of four custom The 39 Clues-branded premiums, including custom stories and activity pages.  The latest novel, Book 11: Vespers Rising, written by Rick Riordan, Peter Lerangis, Gordon Korman and Jude Watson, will release on April 5, 2011. Vespers Rising will be followed this fall by The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers, a second story arc of the franchise.  The 39 Clues movie is in development at DreamWorks Studios, with Steven Spielberg potentially directing and Scholastic Media’s Deborah Forte producing.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Corus Entertainment names Maria Hale as its VP/Television, Head of Programming and Production.  Hale, who takes up her new position April 4, 2011, will oversee strategic direction for Corus’ TV programming, including content production, acquisitions and distribution across its specialty and pay TV channels.  She will report to Doug Murphy, EVP and President/Television, Corus Entertainment.  Hale previously served as VP/Content, Telus, overseeing TV and mobile content acquisition for linear and VOD.
