Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/16/10
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 16, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The FCC‘s much ballyhooed National Broadband Plan will be unveiled Tuesday morning and pre-briefings, op-ed pieces and preview stories have given us a clearer picture of how the government plans to tackle America’s lagging broadband connectivity issues. The plan sets out to make broadband the medium of choice for information dissemination by offering free basic services to schools, hospitals and gov’t buildings; spurring mobile innovation by freeing up half of broadcasters’ wireless spectrum by 2015 and insuring that at least 100 million users have “affordable” access to speeds of 100 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up. Various funds will also be created to help connect the some 100 million Americans currently without broadband access, including a Mobility Fund for states lagging in 3G coverage and the Connect American Fund, shifting up to $15.5 billion revenue from the existing Universal Service Fund. So far the FCC is less clear on how it plans to hold down prices charged by U.S.-based ISPs, which can run 2-3 times higher than similar speeds offered by Asian or European ISPs.
Sony Pictures Television is broadening the focus of its 62-country Animax pay TV channel, targeting a younger 14-29 year old demo by extending programming to multiple platforms including the web, mobile and emerging outlets. Beginning in April, Animaxtv.com will begin to feature micro-blogging, fan wiki elements, IM features, mash-up tools and digital collectibles. New programming will include a mix of local productions, network originals and targeted web programs, along with scripted series from the Sony archive.
PBS’ American Experience is premiering its feature length “Earth Days” documentary on Facebook on April 11 before it airs on PBS on April 19 – a first for the social networking site. The film, about the origin of the environmental movement, will be shown via a new social screening app powered by Brand Networks that enables users to interact with filmmaker Robert Stone and Exec. Producer Mark Samels.
UK-based social issue film distributor Dogwoof (“Food Inc.”) has signed a deal to adopt Cisco‘s Eos social Entertainment Platform to grow its online communities. Individual Eos-powered sites will be developed for each film Dogwoof distributes along with the social issue it addresses.
Major League Soccer is launching a new video-centric website this week at MLSsoccer.com offering an online out-of-market games package for the first time, per Sports Business Journal. (The league’s site was formally hosted by MLB Advanced Media.) The video player, based on Microsoft’s Silverlight platform and built with NeuLion, will feature HD-quality live and on demand games with DVR functionality. A Spanish-language component is also planned.
AnyClip is a handy new movie database site now in public beta that allows you to search for excerpted movie scenes by snatches of dialogue, actors, themes and other related keywords. The plan is to eventually add video clips to the database, but presently only the written dialogue is available in most instances. The site, which works by accessing extensive metadata on each movie, has indexed 2,000 features so far.
A new online web guide for original web series has launched to help remind folks when their favorite web shows have new episodes to watch. Dubbed Slepisodes, the site has catalogued 250 shows to date.
MTV‘s “A Thin Line” campaign, with support from Blue Shield of California Foundation, unveiled “Over the Line?” – a new online app to help young people draw their own “line” between digital use and digital addiction. Audiences are also encouraged to vote on the three finalist ideas vying to win a $10,000 prize and a potential development budget of up to $75,000 in the “Redraw the Line” challenge.
Call for Content: CBS‘s classic soap As The World Turns and CBS.com are launching a casting call contest to celebrate actress Eileen Fulton’s 50th anniversary on the show. Fans are asked to upload videos of themselves performing cabaret songs for a chance to perform with Eileen on the May 18 episode. Voting runs April 21-28.
On the heels of $50 million in new funding, leading online women’s lifetime vertical Glam Media launched a French version of its site, run by Jean-Pierre Levieux and Orianne Garcia. Glam also operates content networks in the U.S., Japan, the UK and Germany, aggregating content and pushing out ads across its network of woman-targeted sites and blogs.
March Madness has become a Super Bowl of sorts for social marketers as tournament games tend to generate as much traffic as nearly any other live event, noticed USA Today. Planned promotions include Coke Zero’s “Dept. of Fannovation” Brain Bracket poll, asking for new ideas to improve the tourney and MillerCoor’s “Tip ‘n Spin” iPhone app in which you ring up points by balancing a basketball on a Miller Lite bottle.
KIT Digital has acquired privately-held Multicast Media Technologies, Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia for $18 million in cash and stock, including the assumption of approximately $4.6 million in debt. Multicast specializes in software that enables live event broadcasting, generating some $12 million in annual recurring licensing fees.
EMI Group has singed a deal with Brightcove to power its online video publishing and syndication efforts in North America. EMI is the 4th and final music label to sign with Brightcove in the U.S.
Chyron Corporation announced a broadcast graphics partnership with NeuroTV, which enables the company to offer its broadcast partners virtual set technology with real time 3D animation and character sets for use through broadcast. The NeuroTV technology will be demoed at the Chryon booth at NAB.
Spanish animation studio BRB Internacional will utilize technology from Screen 21 to make Zookaboo, Canimals and Kambu the first European animated series to broadcast in stereoscopic 3D, slated to appear on both TV and online later this year. All three will incorporate a 16:9 panoramic format to enable interactive applications on multiple platforms including television, Blu-Ray, VOD, IPTV and mobile devices.
Facebook surpassed Google as the most poplar U.S. site for the week ending March 13 in terms of weekly share of visits, according to Hitwise, amassing 7.07% of all U.S. Visits. Facebook also reached the #1 ranking on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as well as the weekend of March 6 and 7. Google trailed close behind last week with 7.03% of visits, followed by Yahoo Mail (3.8%) and Yahoo (3.67%).
Wasn’t Apple trying to crack down on app clutter? Heart Corp.’s new LMK (“Let Me Know”) division began rolling out the first of what will amount to thousands of template-generated, hyper-focused content apps concentrating on niche fan groups. Some 70 apps have already launched priced mostly at $1.99 each, providing content about such topics as the Boston Red Sox, Cupcakes and Lady Gaga.
Global wireless mapping and information provider American Roamer introduced the first cloud-based interactive international coverage viewer, available through American Roamer’s CellMaps product line. The app provides complete detailed street level data for nearly 80 countries worldwide with the ability to show wireless coverage footprints across the globe.
Yahoo SVP of U.S. Revenue and Market Development Joanne Bradford is leaving the company to join start-up Demand Media as Chief Revenue Officer, according to All Things D. One of Joanne’s most recent accomplishments was signing a deal with Hollywood producer Ben Silverman to create original premium content for Yahoo.
Catherine Avgiris was named SVP and GM of Communications and Data Services for Comcast Cable. Catherine is responsible for all aspects of Comcast’s Xfinity Internet and Xfinity Voice services as well as the company’s High-Speed 2go 4G/3G wireless data service.
Digital marketing firm Zemoga has hired former IPG, Universal McCann and Omnicom executive Andres Navarro as Managing Director, heading up the agency’s Bogota, Colombia office.
Jason Bitensky has joined Discovery Communications as Director, Digital Media Sales, West Coast Region. Jason is based in Los Angeles and reports to Brent Spitzer, VP/Digital Media Sales, Discovery Communications.
Discovery is gearing up for its next big broadcast event premiering this Sunday, the 11-episode natural history series Life – produced by the creators of Planet Earth and narrated by the network’s new partner Oprah Winfrey. The website should serve a two-fold purpose: stimulate demand for the big event with stunning video excerpts from the show and provide more background info on the species covered in the weekly series. The Behind the Scenes section provides detailed background info on excerpts like this one depicting a hungry Komodo Dragon boldly attacking a Water Buffalo three times its size. An interactive Species Map allows users to pinpoint the exact location of each animal featured on the series. And a very cool strategy game integrated with Facebook Connect asks players to take over territories from other players in order to provide a habitat for their endangered species.
