Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Spain’s Imira Entertainment moves into the world of live-action production with a co-production deal with Italy’s Brave Film for two new series.  The two projects included under the deal are a new live-action adaptation of Imira’s animated series Lola & Virginia (26×26), which is being produced in partnership and in joint ownership with RAI Cinema, and has been pre-sold to Nickelodeon for Spain, Portugal and Italy.  The deal will also see Imira and Brave co-producing eBand (26×26), a music focused series about three 15-year-old school friends with a secret life as a virtual rock band.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Black Eyed Peas are set to perform at Nickelodeon’s 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards, Saturday, April 2, at 8p.  Hosted by Jack Black, the annual slime-fest will, as always, feature a range of big names in entertainment and sports including: Jason Segel (Bad Teacher), Russell Brand (Hop), Josh Duhamel (Transformers: Dark of the Moon), Damon Wayans (My Wife and Kids), Jaden Smith (The Karate Kid), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Jane Lynch (Glee), Lindsey Vonn (Olympic Gold Medalist), Nick Cannon (America’s Got Talent, TeenNick Halo Awards), Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly), Victoria Justice (Victorious), Danica Patrick (auto racer), Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Cory Monteith (Glee) and Shaun White (Olympic Gold Medalist), among others.  Also performing on the show this year is Nickelodeon’s own Big Time Rush.  Kids can still cast their vote online at http://www.nick.com.kca11 in 20 categories, as well as via the Nick mobile website ( http://m.nick.com/kca11 ) and via anew iPhone app, as well as an iPad optimized site, TeenNick.com, and the Nickelodeon Facebook page.

9 Story Entertainment inks new international broadcast and DVD deals for the live-action TV movie, Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars.  Picking up the TV rights to Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars are NRJ 12 (France), TV Globo (Brazil), Super Ecran (Quebec), and VRAK (Quebec).  Taking the DVD rights is Madman (Australia).  Disney recently acquired the DVD distribution rights to the movie for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Additional DVD distribution deals include Vivendi Entertainment for the US and eOne Entertainment for Canada.  Based on the Harriet the Spy books by Louise Fitzhugh, Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars debuted last year on Disney Channel in the US and then on other Disney Channels throughout the world.

DHX Media launches an Animal Mechanicals iOS app via iTunes stores worldwide, and simultaneously expands the Grandpa in My Pocket app to be available worldwide.  Based on the animated preschool series the new app, Animal Mechanicals: Beetle Buggy Race ($1.99), invites kids to help Mechana-Fast Mouse as she aims to pick up all the Beetle Buggies scattered/stuck on the racetrack.  The Grandpa in my Pocket: Horatio Heave Ho! ebook, which launched as an iPad app in the UK iTunes store last fall, is now available worldwide, including as an iPhone/iPod Touch versions in English ($2.99).  The story follows as Horatio Heave Ho!, the Sunnysands Bank Manager who wants to be a pirate, decides to dig up the beach in search of treasure.  Grandpa puts on his magic shrinking cap and shrinks and disguised as Captain Teenytoes, Grandpa sets out to teach Horatio, with the team, that there’s more to life than treasure.  The book includes a range of interactive features, as well as images from the TV series, and a full music soundtrack.  Animal Mechanicals is a CBC-commissioned TV series.  Adastra Creative developed and produces the series Grandpa in My Pocket, which is made with participation from Finance Wales.

Cartoon Network and Mattel are teaming up for a World Wrestling Entertainment promotion that includes programming and a sweepstakes.  Starting this week, Cartoon Network is running on-air promos featuring WWE star Kofi Kingston and encouraging kids to a special hotline beginning Saturday, March 19 to enter the sweepstakes.  Mattel’s WWE Rumblers toys will be featured in the promos.  Cartoon Network will feature a wrestling-themed night of programming featuring episodes of Cartoon Network’s Thumb Wrestling Federation, the short-form series produced by Cartoon Network, followed by the movie Nacho Libre at 5p. MARKETING/LICENSING

Classic Media expands its line of Lassie-branded pet products, which includes renewed and new partnerships.  Renewing its long-term licensing deal for Lassie is Sunshine Mills (Lassie Natural Way natural dog food and treats), and signing on as a new partner is Silver One (pet beds, accessories including dog bowls, leashes, toys and apparel).  Silver One will debut its line at the Global Pet Expo later this week in Orlando, Florida.

Coolabi and Hallmark in the UK enter into a four-year deal extension for the humor brand, Purple Ronnie.  The new deal supports the popularity of Purple Ronnie across greeting cards, gift presentations, and personalized card service available via Hallmark.co.uk.

Istanbul-based Hakan Canta, a European producer of licensed products with a longtime relationship with the NBA, served as the sponsor for the recent NBA All-Star Weekend 2011 Celebrations event in Turkey.  Hakan Canta has also just released an NBA range for 2011 that features a variety of back to school products based on many different designs, as well as the new NBA 4 Her line, which combines basketball and fashion.

Lots of research on kids media use …

The way kids socialize is changing as they get older, according to The NPD Group‘s ( www.npd.com ) new Kids Leisure Time IV report, which finds that kids traditional person-to-person social interaction decreases as kids get older and is replaced by other forms of socialization including social networks, cell phones and video chatting. Not surprisingly new technologies, activities and entertainment options are making an impact on the ways kids choose to spend their down time (come see my teenager sit on the sofa playing games with friends sitting next to him and others in his ear playing with them live from their homes), and there are more activities to fit in their free time. What isn’t changing is the average down time they have, which has been about 68 leisure hours in an average week since 2007.

Younger kids’ use of media is growing and begins to change around the age of 8, with mobile platforms becoming increasingly more popular, according to a new Sesame Workshop and The Joan Ganz Cooney Center report, Always Connected: The new digital media habits of young children ( http://joanganzcooneycenter.org/Reports-28.html ), which looks at data from seven studies from Sesame Workshop, The Cooney Center, Kaiser Family Foundation, and The Nielsen Company among others.  While TV remains the top medium used by younger kids, mobile devices are four of the top five owned by kids.  The report says the use change at age 8 is likely tied to the developmental milestones that come at that point, such as staying with activities for longer periods, more advanced motor skills, and developing more complex social relationships.  Findings include:

  • Nearly 25% of kids (ages 0-5) use the internet at least once a week and just under half
  • of all 6-year-olds play video games.

  • Media multitasking is becoming predominant with about 36 percent of children ages 2 to 11 using television and the internet simultaneously
  • Almost nine out of10 kids over age 5 are TV viewers. They are watching at least three hours of TV a day.
  • Digital divides – a gap remains in access to technologies especially among low income and ethnic minority kids and also notable differences in usage. The current economic climate may be widening this gap.
  • Parental guidance of kid’s media use, research-based guidance that is according to the
  • Cooney Center and Sesame Workshop, has not kept up with the multi-media options for kids and must be further developed

  • Support of multi-generational co-viewing is an important opportunity for digital media
  • companies and has research on its side showing that it provides important interaction for kids and parents alike.

  • Finally, given the amount of time that kids spend using media outside of school, more
  • research should be conducted to better use technology as a way to enhance and provide truly educational experiences through media.

Drew Korzeniewski is upped to VP/Ad Sales and GM, Radio Disney Station Groups. Korzeniewski’s new position expands to include oversight of the network’s national ad sales, while he continues to be responsible for Radio Disney’s local ad sales and local station management.  He will report to Rita Ferro, EVP/Disney Media Sales and Marketing and Sean Cocchia, SVP and GM, Radio Disney.  Radio Disney is available via 32 owned stations and nationally via Sirius and XM Radio and other digital platforms. Korzeniewski, who joined Radio Disney in 2001 as GM, Radio Disney Station Group, was most recently VP and GM, Radio Disney Station Group.
