Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/15/11
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, March 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
AT&T, which moved to tiered data pricing for the iPhone last year, disclosed plans at SXSW to begin capping DSL broadband customer at 150GB/month and U-verse subscribers at 250 GB/month. Customers who go over will be charged an additional $10 for each 50GB bucket of usage. AT&T says less than 2% of its customers will be impacted. But the move kicked off a wave of concern that metered pricing is on its way to becoming the industry standard. (Comcast, Cox and Charter have set similar caps, sending out warning letters to customers who exceed the data limits.) Of course, streaming movie services, namely Netflix, have the most to lose as data usage becomes more closely monitored. Netflix streaming has found to account for between 20%-30% of ISP’s peak traffic depending on the study, and is the subject of an ongoing dispute between Comcast and Level 3.
The CBS Interactive division that produces some 175 collegiate athletic sites, CBSSports.com College Network, has struck a partnership with online video platform Thought Equity Motion to extend that platform to individual universities to enable them to monetize video sports archives. Services include digitization, play-by-play metadata indexing and search, social and sharing features and integration through CBS’ College Network partner sites.
TVGuide.com is now encouraging sports fans to “check in” to their NCAA Tournament Daily Sports sections, enabling fans to update their status while watching games including NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA, auto-racing, golf and tennis. Locally televised high school games also will be available for check-in.
NBCU’s business news network CNBC.com announced it set traffic records and iPhone app page view records in February, reaching 6.8 million uniques on its site – an y/y increase of 61%. CNBC also launched a new Twitter Fast Money tournament modeled after March Madness.
Social gaming start-up Zynga introduced its own virtual currency dubbed “zCoins” across 10 of its most popular Facebook Games. Zynga says the RewardVille program in games such as FarmVille, Mafia Wars, Treasure Isle and Zynga Poker will be used to unlock virtual goods and special exclusives but that it will not replace Facebook’s own Credits system, which is tied to real cash.
Cloud-based video creation tool provider Animoto launched a new partner program to make its video slideshow service available to third party sites. Initial partners Kodak Gallery, American Greetings’ AG Interactive and Aviary.com will begin offering Animoto’s editing and creation tools directly on their sites.
Capitol Broadcasting chief James Goodman proposed an alternative to the FCC’s proposed broadband spectrum auction, writes Multichannel News. The idea is for broadcasters to provide an ancillary service to handle distribution of video whenever wireless broadband providers can’t handle the traffic volume themselves. The FCC would still get to take a 5% cut of the revenues generated from the service, per current spectrum reselling rules.
ComScore introduced a new web analytics package it says will provide a more flexible reporting architecture for faster reporting of granular results. Resulting from its acquisition of Nedstat last year, the technology reports demographic info from a combination of server-side data and behavioral data collected from ComScore’s panel.
Calling it “the First Amendment issue of our time,” Sen. Al Franken struck an alarmist tone at his SXSW address on the net neutrality issue on Monday, warning that companies such as Comcast are out to destroy the openness and accessibility of the internet by filtering content and raising prices.
IAC CEO Barry Diller, who noted that cable companies’ broadband profit margins are in the 80-90 percent range, also complained that the FCC’s current net neutrality roadmap doesn’t go far enough in protecting publishers.
European streaming service LoveFilm has struck a deal with Oregan Networks to launch its subscription movies streaming service on the Onyx media browser. LoveFilm’s WatchNow video service will become available on all devices running the Onyx browser, including Cello’s iViewer television sets and Digital Stream’s DPS-1000 set top boxes.
AT&T is waving charges for cell phone calls and text messages sent from the U.S. to Japan for the rest of March to help users reach their loved ones in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami. Residential landline customers are also eligible for up to 60 minutes of direct-dial calling to Japan, effective from March 11 through March 31.
Verizon is offering free wireless calls and texting from the U.S. to Japan through April 10 for its non-pre-paid customers. Calls made from a Verizon landline to Japan will also be rated at $0.00 per minute, from March 11 through April 10.
AT&T, Verizon and Apple are all facilitating donations to the Red Cross to help with Japan’s disaster relief efforts:
- AT&T and Verizon customers can text “redcross” to 90999 to make a $10 donation
- The charity gift wizard app on iTunes allows you to chose donation increments between $5 and $200.
Online casting platform GotCast.com says it is donating 100% of its new membership fees on Tuesday, March 15 to the Red Cross’ Earthquake and Tusunami Relief Fund.
Verizon FiOS TV, Comcast and other multichannel providers are offering free access to TV Japan for a the next few days – typically the most expensive channel in the line-up at $25/month.
Joe Uva, the head of Univision Communications – the nation’s leading Hispanic broadcaster – is stepping down when his contract expires on April 2 in order to “seek other opportunities.” Haim Saban, Executive Chairman of Univision, will assume Joe’s responsibilities as CEO and President until a replacement is found. The news follows a January announcement that former NBC and AOL boss Randy Falco would become Univision’s COO.
UK-based ContentFilm has rebranded to Content Media Corporation and established 3 divisions under the new moniker: Content Film, Content Television and Content Digital. The company owns a library of more than 3,200 hours of TV programming, 800 television movies, 200 feature films and 300 hours of digital content. Greg Phillips will continue to oversee Content Television and Content Digital, and Jamie Carmichael will run Content Film. Jonathan Ford, who has been responsible for the company’s digital efforts as EVP, Digital Acquisitions and Distribution, will continue to report to Greg and manage Content Digital on a day-to-day basis.
My Damn Channel tapped Alpha Media Group VP and digital marketing vet Matt Kaplan to lead a new national sales team as the company’s Chief Revenue Officer. He will be based in New York and report to My Damn Channel Founder/CEO, Rob Barnett.
Former NBCU marketer Maryam Banikarim has been named SVP and Chief Marketing Officer of Gannett Co., a newly created position. Maryam reports to President and COO Gracia C. Martore and will also serve on Gannett’s Management Committee.
Tom Armstrong has been promoted by Viacom International Media Networks to VP/Digital Sales, Viacom Brand Solutions International, overseeing ad sales for all VIMN digital platforms. He will be based in the UK, Reporting to Dave Sibley, EVP & Managing Director, VBSI and Philip Bourchier O’Ferrall, SVP/Digital.

Getting a film up online is easy – it’s promoting it and finding an audience that’s tricky. Big Air Studios, the new multiplatform distribution outfit founded by former Sony Pictures EVP/Digital Michael Arrieta, is turning to the Software-as-a-Service Cisco Eos platform to build interactive and mobile touch points for the films it distributes. Beginning with the teen dramedy it acquired at Sundance, “My Suicide” due to premiere in May, indie filmmakers will be able to create their own online destinations to offer trailers and digital extras or host interactive interviews or other events. The turnkey platform will make it easy to push the content to third party sites and mobile platforms, according to Mr. Arrieta, in order to ultimately drive sales on iTunes, Xbox, Amazon and the PlayStation Network. “Technology can be great enabler – taking in films, providing methods of discovery and distributing them to online stores for purchase,” he said. “But it’s a difficult undertaking on the technology side – we want to provide an easy to use platform for indie filmmakers.”
