Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Although it was probably his least-kept secret in recent memory, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the next-generation iPhone 4 at the company’s annual developer’s conference yesterday and filled in some details about the iAds platform, set to debut on July 1. The iPhone 4, slated for release in the U.S., UK, France, Germany and Japan on June 24 ($199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model with a two year AT&T contract) is some 24% thinner and corrects many shortcomings of the current models. New features include multitasking, a new 3.5-inch “Retina” display with 4 times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS and an aluminosilcate glass casing made of something akin to Silver Surfer’s surfboard. Its 5 megapixel front facing camera with a 5X digital zoom is capable of shooting HD video and enabling face-to-face video calling. And a new 3-axis gyro provides 6-axis motion sensing for gaming developers, opening the door to a whole new generation of accelerometer-powered games. The phone also ships with the brand new iOS 4 operating system, boasting the ability to finally organize your apps into folders.


Disney’s ABCFamily.com introduced a new Sound Booth featuring sampled music videos and tracks from upcoming artists featured on ABC Family shows. As part of a “Free Music Monday” program, users will be able to download a free MP3 each week through Aug. 30, beginning with The Pierces’ “Secret,” the title song for ABC Family’s new original scripted series “Pretty Little Liars” debuting this evening.


Social network app developer RockYou closed on an additional $10 million of funding from Japanese tech giant Softbank, bringing its total raised to $127 million. The company says it will use the funds to expand into Asia and will be taking over a majority stake in its RockYou Asia joint venture.

The much anticipated iAd platform is ready to roll out on July 1 on iPhone 3Gs or better and second or third generation iPod Touch models running on the new iOS 4 platform and Apple has already lined up $60 million in commitments from leading brands including AT&T, Best Buy, Target, Turner Broadcasting, Nissan, Unilever and Disney. With its new multitasking capabilities, iAd apps will allow users to engage with an ad within individual apps while watching videos or playing games and built-in ecommerce functionality will enable direct purchases of merchandise.
India-based global mobile ad network InMobi is announcing its official launch into the U.S. market this morning, bringing an automated ad serving platform that now serves some 16 billion monthly impressions to U.S. publishers and advertisers for the first time. InMobi’s selling point will be the ability to scale campaigns across a broad base of handsets and ad units, according to N. American VP & Managing Director Anne Frisbie. Its software and analytics allow advertisers to contour campaigns around specific objectives using sophisticated auto optimization controls, she said. The company has grown in leaps and bounds internationally, doubling its impressions in the past 6 months alone, partly due to the global nature of the nascent apps market. But WAP-based ads are an equally important part of the mix, said Ms. Frisbie.
Video ad network Tremor Media announced a new partnership with in-stream video ad company Innovid to offer advanced interactive pre-roll units across Tremor’s network of 1500+ sites. Utilizing Innovid’s “iRoll” technology, the units will offer features such as the ability to view multiple videos, showcase multiple products, look up movie times, share on social networks or print coupons directly from the ad. MTV Networks announced it is extending its demo-specific “Tribes” vertical ad networks to mobile devices, beginning with a trio of ad networks for the iPhone sponsored by Miracle Whip. The networks will offer advertisers full-screen banner or Flash (converted to HTML5) ads to run across select, premium iPhone apps serving MTVN’s key demographics:

  • an Entertainment Mobile Tribe anchored by Comedy Central and Spike targets men
  • a Casual Gaming network built around Addicting Games and Shockwave includes casual gaming apps
  • a Music and Youth network including MTV, VH1 and CMT focuses on music and pop culture

Total cinema ad industry revenues of Cinema Advertising Council members, which account for more than 82% of U.S. movie screens, grew by nearly 2% to $584 million in 2009, according to the CAC’s annual report. Regional and national cinema advertising sales were up 5.4% compared with the previous year, accounting for 79.4% of the industry.


Google is now facing data inquiries stateside, with Connecticut’s Attorney General Richard Blumenthal sending a letter to the company requesting information about its Street View data collection practices within his state. The state of Missouri launched a similar inquiry on Friday, according to Reuters.
A group of 10 Consumer Groups penned a letter to the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet calling for stronger privacy measures to protect consumers both on and offline. Rep. Rick Boucher introduced a potential privacy bill last month that would require ad network to obtain users consent before tracking their clicks but privacy advocates feel as though the measure doesn’t go far enough. The groups request that any bill should Fair Information Practice Principles, expand definitions of what constitutes “sensitive information” and require strict “opt-in” procedures for the collection and use of covered data.


Worried that AT&T’s new data limits will cramp your media consumption on the iPad? TV entertainment portal Clicker posted some estimates about what you can expect to get out of the data plans ($15 for 200 MB, + $15 for each additional 200MB and $25 for 2 GB of data.) AT&T has said 200MB allows you to send/receive 1,000 one page text emails, 150 one- page emails w/attachment, view 400 web pages, upload 50 photos and watch 20 minutes of standard-quality video. With 2GB, this goes up to 10,000 one page text emails, 1,500 emails with attachments, 4,000 web pages, 500 photos and 200 minutes of standard-quality video. But iPad users are buying the device to watch video and this is what they can expect to get out of the 2GB cap if they did nothing else with the device:

  • 17 hours of standard-def YouTube video or
  • 13.65 hours of programming on Netflix or
  • 10.24 hours of programming on ABC’s streaming app

New usage figures unveiled at Apple‘s developer’s conference include:

  • There are now nearly 100 million iPhone and iPod Touch users around the globe
  • More than five billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store
  • More than 225,000 apps are available to consumers in 90 countries
  • Apple receives 15,000 app applications a week, and 95% are approved within seven days
  • The iPad will be available in 19 countries by the end of July
  • More than 35 million apps have been downloaded to iPads to date



Esquire announced that its iPhone app developed with ScrollMotion has reached 100,000 downloads since launching on the iTunes store in Jan. A new annual subscriptions option, the first of its kind for a major glossy magazine on the platform, has been purchased by 1,000 readers during the first two months of availability.
Zynga announced that its wildly popular Farmville Facebook app will be available as in iPhone game by the end of June.


Mobile video ad platform mDialog has hired a pair of new executives. Former Microsoft and AOL/Adcom veteran Jeffrey Anderson joins as SVP/Business Development and viral video producer Tim Street was named VP of Mobile Video.
Discovery Communications has upped Bill Goodwyn to President, Global Distribution and CEO of Discovery Education. He previously served as President, Domestic Distribution and Enterprises and oversaw the relaunch of the standards-based digital media services effort Discovery Education.
RMG Networks has tapped Suzanne La Forgia as EVP/Advertising Sales. She will be based at the company’s New York City offices and report directly to Garry McGuire, CEO of RMG Networks.


A new multiplatform home channel called IndieShop is set to launch on June 14 as a 10.5-hour weekly programming block in 40 million cable TV households, offering independently-created fashion, accessories, house wares and other crafty goods introduced by the designers themselves. The channel and website is being launched by New York-based Cross-Mediaworks’ infomercial network Wizebuys TV, whose producers will travel around the country shooting segments at designers’ own studios with an emphasis on unique limited-run creations that might cost a pretty petty if sold at an upscale boutique on Fifth Avenue. The start-up is a perfect example of using a tried-and-true business model, the live shopping channel, as a jumping off point to create something that fills a new niche. Taped segments will save on production costs. Orders will be processed via the ecommerce site and text-based mobile purchases (with apps in the works), eliminating the need for expensive telemarketing. And vendors will interface with customers to fulfill orders directly. The company would not discuss its revenue split with designers, but the channel is being carried both as a media buy or a rev. share arrangement with carriers.
