6/26/07
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 26, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
While the median age of the US population may be 37, the median age of the television viewing audience across the five major English language broadcast networks is 48, according to a report issued by Steve Sternberg/MAGNA Global. Over the years ABC has aged from a median age of 44 in 2002, to a current season average of 48. CBS has been pretty steady over the past few years, averaging 52 or 53. NBC has gotten a little older, upping its average from 46 in 2002 to 49 now. The CW has been fairly flat from its previous UPN/WB days of 32 average age, to its current 32. The biggest difference has come from Fox, which in 2002 had a median viewer age of 35, and this year the average viewer age is 42, thanks in large part to the popularity of shows such as 24, Bones and House. Among the youngest skewing shows on the network continue to be The Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad.
Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Shaq’s Big Challenge at 9p

NBC will no longer air repeats of Friday Night Lights this summer, tho fans can see all the current episodes online at NBC.com. The three encore episodes which aired on consecutive Sunday nights since May 27 averaged a 0.9 A18-49 rating. Instead, NBC will air Law & Order reruns. NBC.com promises “TV’s best drama returns with new episodes this fall.”
Depicting what it’s really like to become a high fashion model in New York, TLC will debut A Model Life with Petra Nemcova July 13 at 10p. The eight-week series shows Petra mentoring six young women from different parts of the world as they try to break into the competitive and harsh world of modeling and hope to gain a contract with the NEXT Modeling agency at the end of the series. 25/7 Productions in association with The Mottola Company produced the series for TLC.
Program Partners has cleared the teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation in more than 85% of the U.S. for a national syndication strip launch this September. New affiliates include stations from Belo, Clear Channel, Freedom, Gray, Lockwood, LIN, Schurz, Sinclair and Weigel groups.
Starting July 2 and throughout the summer, TV Guide Network will air all four seasons of The Surreal Life every weeknight at 10p. Earlier this year, the network acquired exclusive domestic cable and satellite telecast rights to this series in addition to My Fair Brady, Flavor of Love, Strange Love, Fame Games (Surreal Life All-Stars), I Love New York and Flavor of Love Charm School.
ReelzChannel, the network focused on movies, has three new original programs joining its schedule:
- What I Learned About (Blank) From the Movies – premieres July at 8p and will settle into its regular time period on July 9 at 630p; weekly 30m comedy that explores various life lessons depicted in favorite movies. Topics include s#x, surviving high school, getting divorced and how the geeky guy gets the girl. Executive produced by Boyd Vico and Brad Stevens.
- Movie Takes – premieres daily; short-form humorous interstitials that use real people relating their passion and hang-ups about movies.
- Miscasting – short-form animated comedy that does the “what if” about actors being cast in odd-ball roles.
The Africa Channel is now seen by Comcast subscribers in the Houston market as the channel launched on the cable system last week.
HGTV will offer access to its second season of HGTV Design Star via on-demand starting with the Design Star Casting Special which will air on the linear channel July 22 at 10p and then on HGTV On Demand July 23. Viewers of HGTV On Demand will see sneak previews of future episodes and exclusive behind the competition footage as the remaining eight weeks air on the network July 29 through September 16.
