There is suddenly no limit to domain name suffixes you can register if you or your company has deep enough pockets. ICANN, the body that oversees internet domain naming and registering, has voted to allow customized domain name suffixes beyond the current 22, (which includes the familiar .com, .org and .net.) Global companies will be able make their brands part of their internet address – say justdoit.nike, cities could reserve their own suffixes and media giants could cordon off their empires with a .nbc following each of their sites. It costs $185,000 to establish your own domain name and ICANN will soon launch a campaign to raise awareness for the generic top-level domain name (gTLD) program.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The British Library, the world’s largest next to the Library of Congress, has signed a deal with Google to allow it to digitize 250,000 out-of-print books from 1700 to 1870. The content will be searchable and offered up for free through Google Books.uk and the British Library’s website.
 
Cable network DIY has come up with a “Hollywood Hi-Tech” makeover show to allow viewers to live vicariously through the expensive entertainment systems of the Hollywood elite. Janna Robinson, aka “the Chic Geek,” will visit the homes of stars such as Kevin Connolly, Nancy O’Dell and Oliver Stone to install the latest and greatest systems. The show premieres on Wed. July 20 at 9:30 p.
 
Turner Sports-managed NBA.com will enhance the network’s NBA Draft coverage beginning Thursday with video interviews from draft prospects in the Green Room and social commentary via Facebook and Twitter. NBA Mobile will also provide instant alerts and breaking news updates on draft picks through NBA Game Time, the league’s digital app.
 
Telemundo‘s social media unit Social@Telemundo has finished collecting votes for its first-ever broadband award show, “Allstate Presents Premios Telemundo Novelas,” which enabled online and mobile audiences to vote and comment on twenty different categories based on Telemundo novelas. The voting took place on the internet and over mobile devices, and was shareable via Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms. The winners will be announced on June 30, culminating with a “made for broadband show” that will highlight each of the winners and include special video messages from talent.
 
CNET has established a “How To” channel featuring more than 700 “How To” posts and videos along with a community forum to help users with their technical issues. For instance, this entry walks you through how to stream media from a PC to a TV through the Xbox.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Congratulations to the winners of Change.org‘s Hack for Change, a 24-hour “hackathon” competition where engineers gathered to come up with new apps to encourage social change. Brent Fitzgerald and Huned Botee took the top prize with a community-based text messaging service, “Good Neighbor” that sends messages when neighbors need a hand with quick tasks or errands. The first runner up was “Project AnonyMouse” a platform developed by Aaron Moy and Aashay Desai that connects members of LGBT community with mentors.
 
MTV’s bilingual Tr3s network is creating a new Latino-themed music channel with OurStage.com featuring original music made by artists within its 175,000+ Artist Community. A new monthly editorial prize dubbed “El Headliner” will be awarded to one artist from within the Top 20 fan-ranked music channel and receive extensive exposure across the network’s on-air and digital platforms.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Facebook introduced a new ad unit with Allstate and Hallmark that allows advertisers to pose questions to users about their brands. The initial question will appear as a “Sponsored Story” on the right side of the Facebook screen then users’ responses will appear within personal feeds. Hallmark plans to ask, “How do you make summertime a special occasion?,” per AdAge, while Allstate’s “Mayhem” campaign will ask users, “What’s your mayhem?”
 
Local search mobile app maker Poynt Corp. signed a deal to utilize Mocean Mobile‘s ad serving platform to monetize its app with locally targeted rich media ads. The company’s Poynt app provides GPS-powered info on local businesses, events, restaurants, movie theaters, gas prices and has content partnerships with providers such as Citysearch, Yellow Pages, Superpages, OpenTable and Movietickets.com.
 
Media Dash Local is a new self-serve online platform designed to enable easy buying and selling of local radio spots. The digital platform is designed to help broadcasters sell premium on-air and streaming commercials to both new and repeat advertisers. The product will be branded locally in each market, and has already launched in New Jersey, Denver and New Orleans.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The much-maligned Google TV set-top could be getting some upgrades as Google has acquired open source DVR software developer SageTV for an undisclosed amount. SageTV’s Media Center software allows PCs equipped with TV tuners to schedule and manage recordings with features including the ability to archive, create playlists and convert video files into different formats.
 
Sega confirmed that it became the latest video game company to be hacked, the target being the 1.3 million-member Sega Pass online network. Sega took the system offline but said that victims’ personal payment info was not at risk.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Closing in on 700 million global registered users, Facebook will rise to overtake Yahoo as the top purveyor of display ads on the internet, according to a new eMarketer forecast, growing revenues an astonishing 80.9% in 2011 to $2.19 billion. The company has succeeded in capturing a wider range of advertisers from long tail to more established brand advertisers. Google is also posting phenomenal growth this year and next and is expected to virtually tie Yahoo’s display ad earnings in 2012.

Skype for Windows has been updated to include much deeper Facebook integration, with features such as Facebook chat and the ability to like and comment on a friend’s status being added to the mix. A new call control toolbar makes the interface much more visual, enabling you to view all of your Facebook friends in a Facebook contacts tab.
 
Connect by Hertz has partnered with web/mobile app HopStop to integrate hourly car rentals within the popular navigation platform, in addition to bicycle, bus only, subway/rail only, subway/rail or bus, taxi and walking. Users will be able to reserve a vehicle, access customized walking directions to and from the nearest Connect by Hertz location and get round-trip driving directions. HopStop, now available in 57 markets, has also added an Advance Check-In social media tool to let friends know where they’re going and when they will arrive.
 
Planning many hours by the lake or pool this summer? OverBoard has developed a waterproof case designed to protect your smartphone while enabling you to still use the phone. (It’s designed to fit the iPhone perfectly but other touchscreen phones will likely fit.) It retails for $24.95.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
A number of top Skype executives were dismissed before Microsoft closed on its deal to acquire the company, per Bloomberg. Exiting executives include Vice Presidents David Gurle, Christopher Dean, Russ Shaw and Don Albert; Chief Marketing Officer, Doug Bewsher; Anne Gillespie, Head of Human Resources; and executives Ramu Sunkara and Allyson Campa, from the 2011 Qik purchase.
 
Tribune Media Services‘ has let go of David Williams, President and CEO of TMS, as part of a restructuring that will establish its “Entertainment Products” division, provider of databases of television, movie and celebrity info, as a stand-alone unit. The “News & Features” division of TMS, which syndicates content to print and online customers, will be integrated with Tribune Publishing’s other content operations, to be overseen by Walter Mahoney, currently SVP/McClatchy- Tribune Information Services. He will report to Tony Hunter, President and CEO of Chicago Tribune Media Group. Jay Fehnel will continue to oversee the Entertainment Products group as SVP/COO, reporting to Dan Kazan, SVP/Investments at Tribune Company.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Discovery is betting that inquiring minds what to explore deeper issues in a provocative new website, Curiosity.com – a Q&A platform to go along with the network’s upcoming Curiosity TV series that aggregates wisdom from some of most talented people in their professions. Contributors include Google’s Chief Internet Evangelist Vinton Cerf, who shares his thoughts on what “friendship” means in the age of social media and Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel, who discusses human rights, forgiveness and the power of the media. Each expert has their own profile page and questions and their corresponding answers are rotated on the home page along with 32 topic pages, from paranormal science to palynology (the study of pollen and spores.) New Luminaries will be unveiled each week with in-depth original video interviews and reflections. Social sharing functions will also be added in the coming weeks to allow users to create their own profile pages and spark their own discussions.
