MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will premiere the new SpongeBob SquarePants special, The Clash of Triton, over Independence Day weekend on Monday, July 5, at 8p.  The 30-minute special features celebrity guest stars Victoria Beckham as Queen Amphitrite, John O’Hurley as her husband, King Neptune, and Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) as their rebellious son, Triton. The special also kicks off a week of new SpongeBob episodes debuting Tuesday-Friday, July 6-9 at 8p on Nick.  The premiere, and encores, of The Clash of Triton will be simulcast on Nickelodeon Mobile, and the special episode will also be available on download-to-own platforms following its on-air premiere. Additionally, Nickelodeon will launch a game of the week based on the special, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Clash of Triton, on July 5.  Finally, Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will release the special on DVD on July 13.

Hutch Dano and Adam Hick, who star in Disney XD‘s comedy Zeke and Luther, will host the network’s short-form Next X, the action sports reality program debuting Monday, June 21 at 7:15p.  The series follows a group of tween athletes as they train with the help of pro action sports athletes in their respective sports (e.g. BMX, skateboarding).  The series culminates with one of the kids heading to test their skills on the course at X Games 16 later this summer.  The big event will be featured in a 30-minute Next X special, which will air in August on Disney XD.

Disney UK acquires the live-action kid/tween series How To Be Indie (26×30) for Disney Channel UK.  The comedy is produced by Canada’s Heroic Film Company and distributed by Decode Enterprises.  The channel plans to air the series over the summer.  Starring Melinda Shankar (Degrassi: The Next Generation), How To Be Indie revolves around a 13-years-old as she works to balance the traditions of her South Asian family and her modern Western teen world.  The series was created by Vera Santamaria (Degrassi: The Next Generation, The Latest Buzz, Naturally Sadie) and Heroic’s executive producers John May and Suzanne Bolch.

The Jim Henson Company inks further TV and home entertainment deals for its CGI animated preschool series Dinosaur Train.

  • In Europe: terrestrial TV rights for Dinosaur Train have been acquired by France 5 (France), SVT  (Sweden), YLE (Finland) and TG4 (Ireland); and basic TV rights have been licensed to Canal + in Poland for their MiniMini Channel; on the cable and satellite side rights have been licensed across Eastern Europe to Chello TV; in Italy, all TV and DVD rights have been picked up by Dall’Angelo Pictures; in Portugal, all TV rights are acquired by Atxilipu; and in Scandinavia, home entertainment rights are acquired by AB Svensk Filmindustri (Sweden, Finland and Norway).
  • Elsewhere: E-Vision (United Arab Emirates) picks up the pay cable and satellite rights for the preschool series; HOP! (Israel) takes the basic cable rights; and On Digital Media (South Africa) acquires the broadcast right; and home entertainment rights to Beyond Home Entertainment.

Kids.nationalgeographic.com ( www.kids.nationalgeographic.com ), the planet-centric website for National Geographic Kids magazine, has launched an online interactive mural featuring 58 of National Geographic’s very own superheroes.  We aren’t talking the stereotypical superheroes, rather the explorer and discoverer types  all looking to help preserve the Earth  and known as the E-Team ( www.kids.nationalgeographic.com/explorers ).  A year in the making, the E-Team mural features a range of men and women explorers and their likeness illustrated by designer Chris Rooney.
