  Cyn opsis: DIGITAL
06/14/11

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

The social networking freight train Facebook may finally be slowing its furious pace of growth, at least in the U.S. and Canada. An analysis of user and traffic data by research and marketing group Inside Facebook (based on data Facebook provides for users of its advertising tool) noted that the social media giant gained 11.8 million new users globally in May (down from 13.9 million in April,) after adding at least 20 million new users for the 12 previous months. Facebook lost nearly 6 million U.S. users in May bringing its total to 149.4 million U.S. users, and also posted losses in the UK, Canada, Norway and Russia. Meanwhile, speculation is swirling about why Apple chose to integrate its iOS5 mobile operating system so closely with Twitter and but decided to leave Facebook out. (Users will be able to Tweet photos directly from the user interface and tweet from YouTube, Safari and Maps.) A rivalry of sorts as sprung up between the two companies, with Apple also choosing not to integrate its iTunes-based Ping social network with Facebook.

Turner-managed Nascar.com is launching its first social game to drive viewers to its Nascar coverage, to be featured within the popular Car Town Facebook app (which counts over 8 million monthly active users.) Nascar Pro Championship, sponsored by Sprint, will enable users to compete against their friends in sponsored races, challenges and other activities that will earn them virtual rewards. Popularity rankings will allow players to keep up with their friends and invite others to be their virtual fans. Race winners will accumulate prizes to add to their Car Town garage.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

As U.S.-based Pandora prepares for its IPO on Wednesday, UK-based music streaming service Spotify has signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group and is getting ready to finally launch in the U.S. in early July, according to a WSJ report. Spotify has reportedly already struck licensing deals with EMI and Sony, and is currently in advanced talks with Warner Music – the last of the major music labels to sign with the service. Spotify offers both a free and a subscription-based ad supported service to stream music to computers and mobile devices.

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University has partnered with celebrity-themed e-card purveyor StarGreetz to welcome its incoming 2011 freshman class with personalized welcome videos from high-profile alumni including MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer (’96) and foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley (’98).

A group of Writers Guild of America, East members will appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee this afternoon to discuss issues such as net neutrality, digital distribution and online piracy. Panelists will include current WGAE President Michael Winship, Diorama founder Thom Woodley and Law & Order and Cold Case writer Gina Gionfriddo.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Google acknowledged that it has agreed to acquire display advertising start-up Admeld in an attempt to improve its ad buying tools and optimization services. Pending regulatory approval, Admeld will conceivably be incorporated into Google’s DoubleClick Ad Exchange but it will also continue to work with third party networks and exchanges, such as Yahoo’s Right Media, OpenX, DoubleClick Ad Exchange, ContextWeb, AdBrite and AppNexus.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

This year’s Cable Show, officially kicking off today, seems to be all about helping cable operators to combat the Over-the-Top threat:

Motorola Mobility
has come up with a new technology to help operators securely stream content from subscribers’ set tops to other mobile devices including smartphones and tablets, including live TV, VOD, games and web-based content. Dubbed the “Medios Xperience” platform, the solution includes a sophisticated user interface that allows users to stream TV shows and movies to multiple devices, access the latest news and gossip about their favorite shows, check into social networking sites or access personalized recommendations and a Netflix-like queue. A companion device can be used to both supplement operator’s current electronic programming guide and watch actual content. The platform will also contain a software development kit (SDK) to enable MSOs to come up with their own apps for customers.

Motorola Mobility also announced that its IP Rights Management-Home Network (IPRM-HN) technology (deployed in the Televation – see below) has been approved by the Digital Transmission Licensing Administrator (DTLA) as an officially sanctioned “output and recording technology” for Digital Transmission Content Protection (DTCP). The technology also has been certified by CableLabs.

Comcast’s white label video management company thePlatform has teamed with Alcatel-Lucent to roll out its own multiscreen video platform that supports the delivery of authorized live scheduled TV, VOD and “TV everywhere” services to a variety of screens. The solution consists of a cloud-based metadata and rights management system, a multi-screen content delivery network and a suite of subscriber applications that support video playback on a PC, tablet or mobile device.

Avail-TVN‘s TV Everywhere solution is dubbed AnyView, built to deliver live TV and VOD content to broadband-connected devices including PCs, Macs, tablets and smartphones. The system, trials of which will being in the U.S. next month, adopts adaptive bitrate technology to insure quality streaming and offers a rights management engine to control access to content based on a variety of business rules including device attributes, content format, geo-location and subscriber tier of service.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

So far video-on-demand services have helped pay TV operators in the U.S. and Europe generate significant extra revenue – the North American VOD market generated $1.98 billion in revenues and the European VOD market totaled $1.11 billion in 2010 – but emerging markets are positioned to follow suit in the coming years, according to a new IMS Research report. The study forecasts that by 2016, North America will continue to lead the market with 33.1% share of world VOD revenues, followed by Western Europe with 30.5% share and Asia Pacific with 25.7% share. The five largest country markets, in terms of VOD revenues in 2016, will consist of the US, Japan, Canada, the UK and South Korea, with the US accounting for over a quarter of the market.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Tivo
has launched a pair of new set-tops at the Cable Show in an attempt to attract more MSO partnerships. The quad-tuner “Premiere Q” DVR will support VOD and PPV and offer the ability to record 4 programs at once. It will also support the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA), a standard to stream internet content when connected to the web. The Spartan-looking Tivo Preview box, Tivo’s first non-DVR set-top offered to cable operators, is streaming-only device for users who want to enjoy the Tivo interface and web-based content without saving shows to a hard drive.

Tivo also unveiled some updates to its companion iPad app tailored for cable operators. The new version automatically adds the operator’s VOD menu into the search and browse features and automatically detects and integrates the operator’s branding, linear programming and VOD catalog when connected to a TiVo box provided by the operator.

The Motorola Televation, developed with Comcast, is a new SlingBox-style device for the cable industry that allows cable customers to pipe live TV to connected devices anywhere within range of their home network. Equipped with a 1GHz tuner, a CableCard and a transcoder, the device plugs into your router to transmit programming to any internet-enabled device

Toshiba began taking pre-orders for the 10″-screen Thrive Tablet, expected to ship by the end of June. The Wi-Fi-only tablet runs on Andriod’s Honeycomb operating system and features a 1280×800 LED display, two cameras, a replaceable battery and multiple inputs/outputs including USB 2.0 and HDMI. The tablet’s prices range from $430 for 8GB of storage to $580 for the 32 GB model.

BBC Worldwide has expanded its free BBC news app to Android devices around the world. The iPhone/iPad version has been downloaded over 3 million times outside of the UK since launching in April 2010.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Peter Bocian, Chief Administrative Officer of Hewlett-Packard, is stepping down along with Randy Mott, Chief Information Officer, effective immediately. Peter’s position will be eliminated but a replacement will be sought for Randy. The company also announced that Ann Livermore, EVP of HP’s Enterprise Business, is also stepping down but she has been elected to the HP Board of Directors. She will remain with the division until a replacement is found.

Michael Hogan

Ubiquitous internet communications platform Skype, which just agreed to be acquired by Microsoft, has partnered with America’s largest cable operator to bring its video chat service to subscribers’ television sets. Skype video calling is slowly being rolled out on various over-the-top platforms such as Samsung’s Internet@TV, but this integration with Comcast could grow the home video chat market by leaps and bounds overnight. The service does not require both parties to have the TV hookup; Comcast subscribers will be able to make and receive video calls from computers, smartphones and tablets. They will, of course, need a video camera, an adaptor box and special remote to utilize the service (which will be available for rent from the MSO if they don’t have their own). The companies will begin testing the service later this year and have yet to announce any pricing.
