Cynopsis: DIGITAL
7/24/07
Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, July 24, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A total of 39 questions from nearly 3,000 videos submitted on YouTube were put to candidates during the Democratic presidential debates televised on CNN last night. The questions, vetted by CNN editors, ran the gamut from the politically specific (Iraq topped the list) to the personally curious. The format seemed to lend a little more honesty to the answers, as the candidates struggled to speak to the digital generation in a their own language. YouTube’s video responses were as interesting as the carefully measured responses. One woman made an excellent criticism that each candidate wasn’t allowed to respond to each question, unfairly skewing the outcome.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
Reports of online piracy and plot spoiling didn’t prevent Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows from selling more than 8.3 million copies during the first 24 hours the new book’s release in the U.S. The record number amounted to 300,000 copies an hour or more than 50,000 copies per minute! Meanwhile falling box office receipts of the latest Harry Potter film Order of the Phoenix, down to second place at $32.2 million, were blamed on the fact that fans were holed up reading all weekend. Surely they’ll be done with the book by next weekend …
Lifetime and RealNetworks formed a partnership to produce a new series of downloadable casual games. Lifetime Presents, which will debut later this summer, will be embedded with ads and promos of Lifetime shows. Casual gaming is dominated by women, according to a report released last week by the Casual Games Association, with adult females consisting of up to 74% of online users. Real has doubled its ad-enabled game portfolio from 12 to 24 games over the past six months, serving up more than 9 million ad-enabled downloads in the past year.
National Geographic Channel launched a campaign today offering an embeddable “How Taboo Are You?” widget featuring video outtakes of taboo rituals from the Taboo series returning August 5 at 9 pm ET/PT. The contest gives viewers the opportunity to choose which taboo ritual they would undertake. Upon making their selection, users will find out if more people agreed or disagreed with their selection.
A&E and History Channel launched MobiTV versions of their channels, available to 3G customers of AT&T Wireless, Sprint and other carriers. MobiTV also carries The History Channel espanol on its Spanish language mobile TV service and offers A&E, The History Channel, The Biography Channel, Crime & Television Network, Military History Channel and History International on its broadband TV service.
TV Guide will be covering this week’s Comic-Con convention in San Diego with an on site blog, breaking news scoops, a series of panels moderated by TV Guide editors and a one hour special Comi-Con: Sci Fi Unleashed, scheduled to air on TV Guide Network on August 5 at 8 pm ET/PT and 7 pm CT.
Oxygen and Artificial Life teamed up to launch a 3G Bad Girls Club mobile game to launch in late August. Players can create avatars based on actual Bad Girls season one characters and star in their own virtual reality show. The game will be available for download for $3.99 at the show’s web site and via botme.com. Oxygen also announced a new promotion with LCD TV manufacturer Westinghouse Digital called Girls Gone Wired, including giveaways, tech vignettes and consultations with a tech guru.
Like McDonald’s, Music Choice can now claim more than a billion orders of its on demand music offering since its launch in November of 2004, according to data provided by Rentrack. Music Choice On Demand currently reaches 104 markets in the U.S., adding Mediacom Communications in a deal announced yesterday. The service generated 54 million views from 4 million set-tops in June.
WWE On Demand will treat customers to a free month of its SVOD service in September to promote WWE’s Biggest Fan contest co-sponsored by Comcast’s Ziddio.com and participating cable affiliates.
Manga and anime distributor TokyoPop premiered four new online shows exclusively via a branded MySpace page, based on manga series I Luv Halloween, A Midnight Opera, Bizenghast and Riding Shotgun. The series features digital animation from digital effects company Menfond Electronic Art (The Nightmare Before Christmas.)
Animal Planet‘s Petfinder.com created an online “Disaster Preparedness Kit” to help families protect themselves and their pets from natural disasters. Petfinder.com provides a searchable database of animals that need homes, connecting with over 10,000 animal shelters across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
High school sports site Takkle.com secured additional financing from Sports Illustrated and The New York Investment Fund. The announcement follows a partnership with SI.com that allows SI users to access Takkle content. Takkle also powers SI’s Faces in the Crowd feature.
Video search engine blinkx has logged on more than 14 million hours of searchable content through more than 200 media partnerships, including new deals with RealNetworks, Lycos and Ask.com.
Social network aggregator MyLifeBrand launched a new video platform MyLifeTV, enabling users to organize, share and soon upload videos based on community interests. Initial channels include A3TV (“The Nightlife Network”), Adventure Online and a music video channel powered by Brightcove. Revver will enable uploading, hosting and ad serving of user generated video.
~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
MySpace founder Brad Greenspan sent out another one of his open letters, this one to Dow Jones shareholders as the Bancroft family considers Rupert Murdoch’s $5 billion offer for the company. He says the creation of a Dow Jones cable channel and a subscription-free WSJVideo web site will push the stock price up to $100 a share. The valuation is based on assumptions of 10 billion views a year and a $30/CPM ad rate.
Responding to Blockbuster’s aggressive pricing moves, Netflix is lowering the price of its most popular movie rental plans by $1 per month. Three DVD rentals at a time will now cost $16.99 while two will drop to $8.99.
Speaking of pricing, Sirius and XM satellite radio companies said they would offer a la carte pricing options with packages starting as low as $6.99 if the government approved their merger. Users could choose from a package of 50 radio channels for $6.99/month, almost half of the current standard rate of $12.95/month.
RCN Corp. and Disney-ABC Television Group struck a multi-year deal to provide ABC, Disney and ESPN programming to RCN customers on a variety of platforms. RCN will carry VOD content from Disney Channel, ABC Family, ESPN and ABC News. RCN high speed internet customers will gain access to the ABC News Now broadband service and the premium ESPN360.com service. The deal also includes carriage of ESPN2HD on RCN’s basic HD tier.
~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
Pay-per-click fraud figures increased by rate of 15.8% for Q2 2007, according to a report released by Austin-based Click Forensics. The average click fraud rate of PPC ads appearing on search engine networks such as Google AdSense and Yahoo’s Publisher Network was 25.6%, up from 21.9 percent during the first quarter of this year. Google and Yahoo have long claimed that Click Forensics inflates its numbers to gain more business from advertisers.
Search engine companies are moving to update their data retention policies amidst concerns by the EU and others they are holding onto personal search data for too long. Microsoft announced plans to remove IP addresses and other info after 18 months as a default setting. Ask.com said it would not retain users’ search history if so requested.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
Consumers are woefully unprepared for the upcoming digital transition in 2009, according to Horowitz Associates‘ annual State of Digital and Interactive Television study, with only 2% of those surveyed claiming to be ready for the switch. Sixty percent said they were unsure how the transition would affect them personally and 67% could not think of how they would benefit from the digital mandate.
~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
IFC named Jennifer Caserta to EVP/Marketing, Communications, Scheduling & Alternative Platforms, moving over from EVP and GM of fuse. She will oversee marketing, branding, scheduling and events of the upcoming IFC Free Film tour, all of IFC’s web properties and on demand efforts as well as all upcoming emerging platform efforts. She reports to Evan Shapiro, EVP & GM of IFC.
Stardoll named MTVN interactive sales veteran Glenn Ginsburg to the post of SVP/Ad Sales. Glenn will oversee global ad sales strategy, establishing operations in both New York and Los Angeles. Before joining Stardoll, he worked on multiplatform initiatives for comedycentral.com, jokes.com, SouthParkStudios.com and AtomFilms.com.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Practicing safe S#x online has gotten more interesting. Modeled after the infamous red light district in Amsterdam, RedlightCenter.com is an adults only, no-holds barred version of Second Life facilitating public and private chat, virtual pick ups and all sorts of other salacious activities. The site has more than 150,000 users and is growing at a rate of 40% per month, according to its parent company Utherverse.com. Just to show it’s not all about you-know-what, the site is hosting the first virtual reality film festival from August 9-11. Users can submit drama, comedy or documentary entries up to 20 minutes in length. Films will be judged by a panel of industry experts, and an audience choice award will be given as well.
