Cynopsis: DIGITAL

07/20/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, July 20, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

This video streaming thing is really starting to catch on. Market leader Netflix is setting its sites on the foreign shores of Canada, planning to launch a Canadian movie and TV show streaming service “on a range of CE devices” later this fall. (Sign up to be notified of the launch at Netflix.ca.) Canadians will only have access to streaming titles, as the mail order service will not be offered. Meanwhile, Coinstar’s $1 DVD rental kiosk maker Redbox is working on launching its own video streaming service to help compete against Netflix, per Bloomberg. The offering, which would likely combine unlimited streaming with a package of monthly physical rentals, would help extract regular revenue from subscribers and help the company expand its catalog beyond the 200 or so titles that currently fit into its 24,000 DVD kiosks.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Viewing of professionally-produced TV online in China is booming and advertisers are starting to clamor to participate in the phenomenon, according to a trend piece in the NYTimes. U.S. – based producers are also finally rushing to license content, partly as a way to stem piracy. Shanghai-based iResearch projects advertising on internet TV and web video sites to reach $346 million this year in China, up from $83 million in 2008.

Starz says it will set a preview sampling record of 61 million+ potential video households with this Friday’s 10 pm sneak peak of the first 2 hours of the 8-hour epic “The Pillars of the Earth,” counting on air, on demand and online affiliate viewing opportunities. One of Oprah’s favorite Book Club selections, “Pillars” will also be previewed on Oprah.com (first hour only), in addition to full 2 hour previews on Fancast and Starz.com.

CBS Interactive’s TV.com site is hosting the fan-determined NOW Awards this Friday, July 23 at Petco Park in San Diego, to celebrate the most buzzed-about TV and entertainment moments. Comedian John Oliver is hosting.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In an effort to standardize ad formats on mobile devices and smartphones, the IAB released the industry’s first benchmark for mobile ad formats, covering 7 major platforms including Android, Blackberry, iPad, iPhone/iPod Touch, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile. Among the goals were to establish points of commonality among competitors and highlight platform-specific findings, emerging best practices and “next steps.” The industry clearly has its work cut out as a run down of common ad formats reveals more than a dozen different banner sizes for the iPhone alone.

Adap.tv, developers of the onesource online video ad management platform, announced that it has signed a number of new clients during Q2 including Blastro, Clipsyndicate, Dailymotion, Mindjolt, Nabbr, Redlasso and Videojug. The company claims clients who have adopted the platform have experienced a 90% repeat buy rate and an increase in ave. campaign budgets by 15 times.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Apple‘s rivals in the smartphone business such as Research in Motion, Motorola and HTC are firing back against Steve Job’s claim that their phones also suffer from reception issues.

A two-year investigation into U.S. spying and counterterrorism efforts by the Washington Post has revealed that Google holds classified government contracts to supply search and geolocation information to the U.S. government, according to advocacy group Consumer Watchdog. The group is asking the Energy and Commerce Committee to look into possible privacy violations by Google, suggesting that its data collection policies relating to its Street View Wi-Fi camera program were designed from the beginning to collect and store personal information.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Interpret LLC‘s latest New Media Measure survey found that consumers been streaming more movies and TV shows than a year ago (12% and 5% more, respectively), and Netflix has greatly increased its share of the streaming video market, up 36% from Q1 of 2009. Streaming continues to be the dominant method for consuming content online, as downloading TV and movies has remained flat. Other findings of the survey, conducted among 9,000 consumers aged 12-65, found that:

  • the incidence of illegal downloading of movies (9%) and TV shows (7%) is well below that of music (20%)
  • usage of social networks has increased 20% from the Q1 of 2009 with market leader Facebook growing 33% over the past year and eclipsing Yahoo as the most visited site among casual gamers
  • cell phone users who have updated content or posted status updates on a social network increased 36%, many through mobile apps
  • 80% of apps downloaded in a typical week are free

Nielsen is trying to convince marketers that Baby Boomers are too numerous and deep-pocketed to ignore. With the oldest of the boomers (born between ’46 and ’64) now set to retire, marketers should know that the crowd differs greatly from pervious elder generations. Namely, they’re tech savvy, willing to spend money on quality and luxury items and willing to try new things. A peek at this ranking of most popular sites by age group indicates little difference, actually, between boomers and younger users. After all, Boomers watch the most video (9:34 hours per day), comprise 1/3 of all TV viewers, online users, social media users and Twitter users and time shift TV more than 18-24s (2:32 vs. 1:32).
