Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07/12/11

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, July 12, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

News Corp.’s phone-hacking scandal has not lessened its resolve to buy BSkyB, it appears, but the deal is not getting any easier to close. The company has officially withdrawn its offer to sell Sky News as part of its bid to takeover BSkyB, the largest multichannel operator in the U.K. The thinking is that closing News of the World should satisfy concerns of excessive influence over the media. Immediately following the announcement, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that the takeover bid will now be redirected to the Competition Commission, likely delaying proceedings for several more months. Meanwhile, a group of disgruntled News Corp. shareholders have filed a lawsuit alleging nepotism and accusing the company of large-scale governance failures surrounding the crisis.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Netflix
is not among the bidders seeking to acquire Hulu from its media owners, according to a WSJ report. Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Microsoft and DirecTV, however, have all shown interest.

The AOL Huffington Post Media Group is launching two new sites this week, one high brow and one low, around celebrity and the arts. HuffPost Celebrity delivers news, celebrity blog posts and original reporting on the latest celeb gossip, while syndicating content out to other interested parties including SFGate and Tribune’s Zap2It. HuffPost Culture, set to launch on Wednesday, covers theatre, film, music and dance. The latter will feature an exclusive video collaboration between David Lynch and the band Interpol.

NBC News and Interactive One began partnering this month to share content and sales activities targeted toward African Americans, combining operations from NBC News’ TheGrio.com and Interactive One’s NewsOne.com. Interactive One will provide sales representation and oversee ad sales operations for both sites.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

A new interactive film project directed by D.J. Caruso (“I Am Number Four”) and funded by Intel and Toshiba engages viewers by inviting them to connect with the protagonist via Facebook and Twitter. Released in short online episodes produced between July 25 and Aug. 4, Inside will invite users to help Christina (played by Emmy Rossum) tackle her dilemma by posting insights, clues, tips and ideas and the best bits will be featured on the site. There’s also an open casting call for a role in the movie running through Jul. 20.

Independent producers are pitching YouTube their ideas this summer to operate one of 20 planned TV-style channels that will roll out next January along with a complete redesign, reports AllThingD. The channels will be organized around cable TV-like verticals including food, sports and entertainment and YouTube will provide up to $5 million in funding to help program them. (Google recoups its investment when the ad revenue starts pouring in.) Creators retain ownership of the programming but YouTube has first dibs on the programming for the first year.

Vin Diesel is writing and producing an original 18×7 min. web series dubbed “The Ropes” for Fox Digital Studios based on pre-Hollywood experiences as a bouncer, per the AP.

U.S. and Canadian judges approved the $4.5 billion sale of Nortel‘s technology patents to Apple, Microsoft, Research In Motion and three other companies. The sale spans wireless, data networking, optical, voice, internet and semiconductor technologies including those related to the long-term evolution (LTE) mobile services.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

More than 83% of US adults have a cell phone and 1/3 of Americans now own a smartphone but ownership is skewed considerably by income and education, according to a new Pew Internet Project survey querying 2,277 adults. Well off, well educated, African American, Latino and younger users all over-index as smartphone users. For instance, 59% of those in a household earning $75k or more own a smartphone and 58% of adults aged 25-34 are smartphone users. An amazing 25% of smartphone users now use their handset as the primary way they connect to the internet. Other findings include:

  • Smartphones operating on Android are the most prevalent (35% of smartphone users), followed by iPhone (24%) and Blackberry (24%)
  • Android phones are especially common among young adults and African Americans, while iPhones and Blackberry devices are most prevalent among college grads and the well-off
  • Nearly half of full-time employees (48%) and 38% of part-time employees own a smartphone
  • 94% of smartphone owners ages 18-29 use their phones to go online, with eight in ten (81%) doing so on a typical day

Spending on games from non-traditional avenues including used games, game rentals, subscriptions, digital full-game downloads, social network games, downloadable content and mobile games has nearly reached that of traditional sales outlets, according to a new NPD Group report. A total of $2.03 billion spent in the U.S. on new physical video and PC game software during Q1 while other monetization methods accounted for $1.85 billion.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Trekkies can geek out using the new $5 Star Trek Padd iPad from CBS Interactive, featuring a faithful reproduction of the LCARS interface fictional characters utilize when they access the ship computer on the show. Log into the official database of Star Trek information, including aliens, ships, places and technologies. Or pull up a detailed episode guide tracking the entire history of the show, from the original series to Star Trek: Enterprise. San Francisco-based ArcTouch developed the app for CBS.

National CineMedia Networks has updated its free Movie Night Out listing app, creating a more visual user interface and adding Foursquare, Facebook and Twitter connectivity. Users can select what kind of evening they’re planning (guy’s night out, date night, family night, etc.) and the app will recommend movies that fit the occasion and suggest nearby locations for eats and other activities.

Sesame Street has launched the 99 cent iYip App for iOS, a soundboard app featuring audio phrases Sesame Street Martians use with regularity. The show has also released its first collection of classic episodes on the iTunes, featuring 4 episodes each from seasons 1, 10 and 20.

Travel Channel has launched its first-ever game app, now available for iPhone and soon to launch on Android, pegged to the network’s hit television series, Man v. Food Nation. Users have 60 seconds to nosh 10 feet of food dishes sourced from the show.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Multi-device content distribution platform SyncTV signed up another content distributor in Dream Link Entertainment, the Flash-based Japanese anime producer (Eagle Talon Secret Society) that has been fairly proactive in utilizing digital platforms to monetize its content. SyncTV calls itself the first white label nuts-to-bolts digital distribution platform that does everything from encoding content and building customized branded apps for multiple mobile and OTT devices to serving ads and handling subscriber customer service. Its business model is unique as partners can utilize the service and begin distributing channels or apps to a plethora of Connected TV, mobile and web-based platforms without having to pay upfront; customers pay a fee when they start signing up subscribers or making PPV sales based on how many use the service. So far the painstaking process of integrating with all these devices has slowed the availability of more premium digital content, according to SyncTV President John Gildred. “A lot of these companies don’t want to invest in infrastructure, they want to invest in the best user experience,” he said. (Publishing in house) becomes a confusing patchwork of different vendor solutions, then you have to integrate with all those devices.” Pioneer’s SyncTV has been around for 4 years and has struggled to sign up content partners, especially stateside. But the company is encouraged by the experimentation going on in the marketplace (HBO Go comes to mind) and is hoping that U.S.-based cable networks start to look beyond MSO’s TV Everywhere solutions.
