Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 4, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Are You Ready Kids?  Aye Aye Captain!  Good thing because Nickelodeon has picked up a ninth season of SpongeBob SquarePants.  The new season, which includes the 200th episode of the animated series, is comprised of 26 episodes and is slated to debut in 2012.  Legends of Bikini Bottom, a new hour-long SpongeBob special including four new stories, will premiere January 28, 2011.  SpongeBob SquarePants was tops with K2-11, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14 on all TV in 2010.  Created by Stephen Hillenburg, who serves as executive producer along with Paul Tibbitt, SpongeBob SquarePants is a Nicktoons Production and is produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios, and can be seen in 171 markets and 26 languages.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon has greenlit a pilot for How to Rock Braces and Glasses, a sitcom featuring singer/actress Cymphonique (she uses just her first name, but her last name is Miller), daughter of Master P and sister of Romeo (Miller), per Variety.   The series revolves around Kacey (Cymphonique), a popular girl whose status wanes when she gets both braces and glasses, but finds happiness by turning to music.  Based on a new Alloy Entertainment book series of the same name and slated for release in September 2011.  How to Rock Braces and Glasses is penned by David Israel and Jim O’Doherty (Grounded for Life, 3rd Rock From the Sun).  Israel will serve as executive producer with Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo.  O’Doherty is currently executive producing the new Disney XD series Wasabi Warriors.  Cymphonique has appeared on Nickelodeon’s True Jackson VP and Just Jordan, and has lent her voice to characters on Disney’s Phineas and Ferb.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Ahead of Disney Channel‘s February 2011 launch of its new preschool brand Disney Junior, fans of the Disney Junior Facebook page will be able to preview exclusive video when Disney Junior’s First Look Fridays begins, this Friday, January 7, 2011.  The new brand’s sneak peeks will feature footage of the new series Jake and the Never Land Pirates, and the short-form series, Mickey Mousekersize and Special Agent Oso: Three Healthy Steps.  From Wednesday, January 12, the Facebook page will also introduce a new character from Jake and the Never Land Pirates each week leading up to the series premiere.  Additionally, to further intrigue younger viewers and their parents/caretakers, Disney Junior will debut Choose the Magic!, inviting them to vote to choose which new episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse will premiere the day Disney Junior launches.

The Hub will premiere its original CGI animated series Transformers Prime on Friday, February 11 at 4:30p, its regular weekly time period.  The network previously promoted the series with a five-part mini series event (November 29-December 3), and leading up to the series debut will re-air the mini series on Fridays beginning January 14 at 4p with the first two half-hour episodes.  Transformers Prime is produced by Hasbro Studios.

Scholastic Media launches Touch & Tilt, its line of iPad storybooks apps.  The three apps, I Love You Through and Through ($4.99), The Magic School Bus: Oceans ($7.99), and Go, Clifford, Go! ($4.99), feature re-playable and interactive stories for younger kids.  The apps are based on Scholastic’s books, I Love You Through and Through by Bernadette Rosetti-Shustak and illustrated by Caroline Jayne Church, The Magic School Bus: Oceans, by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen, and Go, Clifford, Go! based on the series by Norman Bridwell.

MARKETING/LICENSING

DreamWorks Animation is set to release is animated feature film Megamind on Blu-ray and DVD on Friday, February 25. 2011.  A new special feature, Megamind: The Button of Doom, will be available for a limited time in a Double DVD Pack and in Blue-ray/DVD Combo pack, and features the voices of original cast members.  The movie features the voices of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, David Cross and Jonah Hill.  The Double DVD Pack will also include a behind-the-scenes look at the cast, a peek into Megamind’s lair, filmmaker commentary, a tutorial on drawing Megamind, a video comic book among other things.  The Blu-ray/DVD Combo includes exclusive features such as The Animators’ Corner featuring picture-in-picture storyboards, behind-the-scenes footage and insightful interviews, as well as pop-up trivia, a comic creator and more.

Disney will release 15 of its feature films on Blu-ray 3D this year (no specific dates just yet), including Tangled, Tron: Legacy, which release day and date with the 2D Blu-ray editions, as well as Blu-ray 3D versions of The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Bolt, Meet The Robinsons, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, G-Force and Chicken Little, per Coming Soon.  Each of the 3D releases will feature 3D menus, 3D previews of movie trailers and an intro to Disney Blu-ray 3d featuring the studio’s characters Timon and Pumbaa from The Lion King.

Lionsgate enters into two partnerships for the home entertainment release of the wolf-centric animated movie Alpha and Omega, available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital Download and VOD from January 11, 2011.  Alpha and Omega features the voices Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Dennis Hopper, Danny Glover, and Christina Ricci.

  • Lionsgate has partnered with Great Wolf Resorts, which runs water park resorts in North American, for several cross-promotional deals including discounts for products from both companies and will promote the offers on their respective websites.  The Alpha and Omega Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD will include a discount coupon for a two night stay at any of ten Great Wolf Lodge resorts in the US, while Great Wolf Resorts will offer a discount code for the Blu-ray or DVD in its pre-arrival emails to guests, as well as featuring the movie its Cub Club activities area at its resorts, including a free movie poster for Cub Club members.
  • The studio has also teamed with Defenders of Wildlife, a wildlife preservation advocate, for a special Alpha and Omega-braded Adopt a Wolf donation promotion.  The movie DVD will be a featured premium in special Alpha and Omega-branded Adopt a Wolf donation packages, which will be available on the organization’s website. Copies of the movie DVD to be given to people who reach certain donation price-points as well as encourage adoptions through VOD platforms.  To promote the donation package and the Alpha and Omega home entertainment release, Defenders of Wildlife will host a video made from the bonus feature titled Wolves in the Wild. Both companies will also promote the partnership via their websites and social media channels.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop promotes Myung Kang-Huneke to Chief of Staff.  Kang-Huneke joins President and CEO, Gary E. Knell, and COO, H. Melvin Ming in the office of the President.  She will add Corporate Sponsorships and Development groups to her oversight, which already includes legal and business affairs and public policy.  Additionally, Kang-Huneke will continue to serve as General Counsel and Secretary to Sesame Workshop’s Board of Trustees.  Kang-Huneke was previously an attorney for the New Media and Cable Group at ABC, prior to that she was a litigation attorney for ABC and before that for the New York City Housing Authority.
