Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 29, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
thePlatform has unveiled a new Player Service designed to create a universal, HTML5-based video player that would work across different browsers, operating systems, and devices. In developing and launching this new Player Service, thePlatform has elected to go with HTML5 first. Meaning that the Service automatically defaults to HTML5 players to render video, but will also be able to switch to Flash when necessary, all in order to create consistent playback on websites, iOS devices, Android devices, Windows 8 devices, and more. “HTML5 has become the lead technology that we recommend to our customers for publishing videos across devices, and it has replaced Flash as the default setting in our mpx Player Service,” said Marty Roberts, SVP/Sales and Marketing at thePlatform.
The Player Service is also customizable, allowing companies to choose from a variety of layout templates, skins, color schemes, and more. Other features include:
- Social sharing buttons.
- It supports advertising for both VOD and live ad insertion through ad partners like FreeWheel, Adobe Auditude, and DoubleClick by Google.
- Real-time and historical reporting tools, and the ability to access data on usage, quality of service, and audience engagement through partnerships with Conviva, Google Analytics, Omniture, comScore, and Nielsen, among others.
- Compatible with numerous video recommendations engines in order to feed related videos to viewers after each video completion.
The first season of Burning Love, The Bachelor parody that aired on Yahoo Screen last year, is coming to television. The web series will make its television debut on E! during the channel’s Mock Block Monday programming. Reformatted for television, the show will be packaged into seven, 30-minute episodes, airing weekly on E! at 10pm ET/PT, beginning February 25. The web version spanned 14 episodes, with a running time of 10-14 minutes per episode. Executive-produced by Red Hour’s Ben Stiller, Stuart Cornfeld, and Mike Rosenstein; Abominable Pictures’ Jonathan Stern; and Ken Marino and Erica Oyama, the show mocks reality dating shows by following a fireman (Marino) who’s looking for his one true love among a cast of colorful characters. Created and written by Oyama, and directed by Marino, the show stars a number of big names, including Kristen Bell, Adam Scott, Malin Akerman, Michael Ian Black, with cameos from Stiller, Christine Taylor, and Jennifer Aniston. Burning Love is distributed and produced by Paramount’s Insurge Pictures. Yahoo announced earlier this month that the second season will premiere on Yahoo Screen on Valentine’s Day.
Mattel is planning to launch a new multiplatform entertainment franchise called Max Steel later this year. The centerpiece of the new property will be a new animated superhero series, which will premiere in the US on March 25 on Disney XD. There are numerous elements associated with the Max Steel launch that will literally make it a multiplatform property, including a mobile game, toys and other consumer products, and an original graphic novel series. However, within the digital space, Mattel also plans to turn MaxSteel.com into an online content hub, where fans will be able to stream episodes as well as access games, other video content, music, and the latest information on toys and products. MaxSteel.com will go live in March, timed to the series premiere on Disney. The show will also be available for streaming on DisneyXD.com and the Watch Disney XD service.
Adspace Networks is partnering with AccuWeather to provide timely weather forecasts and content to the Adspace Digital Mall Network nationwide. Per the deal, AccuWeather will provide “mall-specific” content including daily weather reports and automated updates for severe weather, pollen count, and/or an excessive heat advisory. This content will be available as 15-second spots, which will be available to advertisers for sponsorships.
Comedian/actor David Koechner (Anchorman) has launched a new web series called Full On Koechner on YouTube. A character-based sketch series, Full On Koechner will be exclusively available on YouTube’s Official Comedy channel, which is a member of the site’s ongoing original content initiative.
Q&A site ChaCha has landed $14 million in a new funding round led by VantagePoint Capital Partners, Rho Ventures, and Qualcomm. “ChaCha has proven its value with fast growth in audience and revenue, and this round of funding enables significant investment in new products, allowing ChaCha to expand its mobile and online experiences for both users and advertisers,” said Scott Jones, CEO of the company, in a statement. While its flagship property remains its Q&A service, ChaCha last year launched Social Reactor, a social engagement platform that connects advertisers to social influencers and celebrities on networks such as Twitter, Tumblr, and YouTube. In doing so, the platform provides advertisers with access to all of those influencers and celebrities’ followers, which currently amount to over 270 million.
Cloud media management service MediaSilo has raised $2.25 million in a Series A round led by Boston-based Schooner Capital. The start-up says it will use the new funds to accelerate growth in new markets and support its product portfolio. MediaSilo’s software-as-a-service platform provides an online video library, complete with collaboration and delivery tools for any media workflow. The start-up says it currently manages “millions” of videos, graphics, audio, and documents for over 400 companies and organizations, including those in the media, production, and retail businesses, as well as professional sports teams, hospitals, and colleges.
Programmatic ad platform provider AppNexus recently closed a Series D round of $75 million, led by Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV). Venrock and Tribeca Venture Partners also participated in the round. “We are going to hire hundreds of engineers over the coming years to build the next generation of our platform,” said AppNexus’s CEO Brian O’Kelley in a blog post announcing the investment deal. “We have some fantastic features coming out over the next couple of months and have and have an aggressive roadmap for the rest of the year.” Other digital companies TCV has invested in include Facebook, Netflix, and ExactTarget.

Click here to learn about the Awards program & enter online!TV search and recommendations provider ThinkAnalytics is licensing The Reference Design Kit (RDK) software stack from Comcast to develop and deliver improved personalized, interactive TV solutions. The RDK is a software bundle that creates a common framework for powering tru2way, IP or hybrid set-top boxes (STBs), and video gateway devices. The goal of the RDK initiative is to facilitate the development and deployment of advanced video services such as cloud-based functionality and improved user guides that feature better graphics and search capabilities. For ThinkAnalytics, this agreement enables it to provide software development, integration, and testing services to STB and chip manufacturers as well as MSOs that are planning to work with the RDK. “Robust and effective search and recommendations are key for developers, operators, and device manufacturers looking to rapidly deliver more intuitive and compelling multiscreen experiences,” said Steve Reynolds, SVP/CPE and Home Network at Comcast. “ThinkAnalytics’ support of the RDK further accelerates our commitment to providing the next-gen video solutions and platforms that will propel the next evolution of TV interactivity.”
Nearly 60% of US consumers still prefer to watch their favorite shows on their TV sets, but also want devices on hand so they can go online and multitask. This is according to a new survey from KPMG International, which polled over 1,000 consumers in the US about their traditional and digital media consumption habits. 42% of US survey respondents said they watch TV and access the web via a laptop or PC, while 17% indicated they watch TV and access the web via a smartphone. In terms of video consumption habits, while TV is still the primary screen, 14% of US respondents did indicate that they prefer to watch TV content via their mobile or tablet because it provides greater flexibility. KPMG International attributes this to “the emerging wave of mobile-centric consumers (25- to 34-years-old).”

HBO has made the next episode of Girls available early on HBO Go, just in case you’ve decided to spend this coming Sunday night watching that little thing called the Super Bowl. Not a bad promotional move on HBO’s part to highlight its video service and give fans of Lena Dunham’s critically acclaimed comedy a chance to catch the next episode without having to wait until after the annual Super Bowl hangover (that’s when you eat and drink so much that you need to lie down for about a week before you resume being a functional human being). For those of you who are HBO subscribers but for some reason do not use HBO Go, the premium channel also plans to air the episode this Saturday night at 10pm ET/PT, as well as during its regular slot on Sunday night.
If at any time during the previous paragraph you wondered to yourself, “how much overlap is there between people who watch Girls and the Super Bowl?” … Well, I couldn’t tell you. But that list includes at least me.
