Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Turner Broadcasting and Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG) have signed multi-year licensing deals with Netflix to bring previous seasons of animated and live-action programming from Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Animation, and Adult Swim, as well as the TNT drama Dallas, to Netflix streaming subscribers in the US. Dallas, which is produced by Warner Horizon Television, will arrive on Netflix next January. Beginning March 30 of this year, complete prior seasons of Cartoon Network fare like Adventure Time, Ben 10, Regular Show, and Johnny Bravo, as well as Warner Bros. Animation’s Green Lantern will show up in Netflix’s Just for Kids section. At the same time, Adult Swim programs like Robert Chicken, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sony Pictures Television’s The Boondocks, and Children’s Hospital, which comes from WBGTV’s Studio 2.0, will also be available on the SVOD service.

 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

It looks like Maker Studios is ready to add some established traditional media talent to its roster of content creators. The digital studio is partnering with Kevin Smith to help the filmmaker program and market his SeeSMod channel on YouTube.Smith will also collaborate with other YouTube talent under the Maker umbrella, which currently encompasses over 5,000 YouTube channels. New programming has already begun to roll out on the SeeSMod channel, featuring a mix of comic-based, comedic sketch, and v-long content. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed. Here are the shows currently airing on the SeeSMod channel:

  • Mondays: Why Bry?, a weekly chat series in which Bryan Johnson (AMC’s Comic Book Men) “terrifies viewers with tales of deviltry and debauchery.”
  • Tuesdays: ComicHead!, a weekly comic book review show hosted by Brian Faraldo.
  • Wednesdays: Walt Flanagan Draws!, a weekly show featuring DC Comics illustrator Walt Flanagan as he talks about his favorite comic book characters and how he draws them.
  • Fridays: Sloppy Seconds with Kevin Smith, the filmmaker’s weekly v-log series.

That’s not all from Maker Studios though, as The Hollywood Reporter reports that the studio is also set to land content partnerships with Snoop Dogg’s WestfestTV and Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Enterprises.

NUVOtv, an English-lanuage channel for modern Latino audiences, has signed a long-term renewal agreement with AT&T U-verse TV. It will be carried on the TV provider’s U200 package. Under the agreement, AT&T U-verse TV also has the rights to launch NUVOtv’s HD channel. NUVOtv recently signed a deal with Jennifer Lopez to create and promote content for its audience, the fruits of which will arrive in early 2013, according to the network.

Alloy Digital’s teen- and young adult-centric YouTube channel SMOSH is now #1 in terms of subscribers with over 6.8 million. It has also topped 2 billion total views since its inception. SMOSH showed up on YouTube in 2005 and has grown to become a five-channel brand, with a total of 10 million subscribers and 2.6 billion lifetime views. The main SMOSH channel is not a part of YouTube’s ongoing original programming initiative. SMOSH’s spin-off property Shut Up Cartoons is.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Tongal, an LA-based start-up that crowdsources video ad content creation for brands, has raised $15 million in Series B funding from Insight Venture Partners. The start-up says it plans to invest the new funds into accelerating the build-out if its creative community as well as in company expansion. Here’s how the company’s crowdsourcing platform works: Brands post projects, including campaign objectives and a cash prize. Then anyone, including those inside and outside of the Tongal community, can submit an idea for consideration. If the brand selects it, that person gets a cash prize. Brands can pick more than one idea to get made. Tongal then shepherds the video creation process by bringing in others to produce and present it to the brand. If the brand likes the video, the person who submitted the idea gets additional money (as do those who produced the video).

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Last November, Viggle announced a deal to purchase fellow social TV service GetGlue for $25 million in cash and 48.3 million shares of stock. That now looks like it’s no longer going to happen. In a blog post yesterday, GetGlue CEO Alex Iskold revealed that his company has called off its merger with Viggle, while adding that the two almost-partners “remain friendly and think highly of each other.” Multiple reports indicate that the original sale required Viggle to raise $60 million in additional funds, which it was having difficulty accomplishing, which in turn probably led to this deal’s demise. For its part, Iskold said GetGlue has “a strong product and partnership pipeline for 2013, and we look forward to delighting our users and expanding the relationships with major networks, studios, and brands.” GetGlue currently has over 3.5 million users.

Video search and recommendations provider Jinni has inked new licensing deals to implement the company’s semantic discovery technology into video guides for seven new pay-TV and online video clients. The new clients include Time Warner Cable and Vudu in the US, as well as a bunch of video content providers in Europe, including France’s Bouygues Telecom, Spain’s Prisa, and the Nordic region’s C More Entertainment. SingTel (Asia) and Multichoice (South Africa) have also come on board to use Jinni’s cross-platform video search and recommendations technology.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

For the latest Nielsen Cross-Platform Report, the measurement firm conducted a pilot study to measure the ad value of marathon viewing, in other words, the amount and value of viewing behavior seven days and beyond (Beyond 7) the live broadcast. According to Nielsen, while a significant majority of shows are watched in the first seven days (98.8% for broadcast TV; 99.3% for cable; and 98.7% for syndicated shows), some types of shows do better than others between days eight and 29, with science fiction being the top-performing genre in the Beyond 7 category.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The Weather Channel is reporting that its app for smartphones and tablets has now been downloaded over 100 million times in total. The app currently averages 38 million users per month on mobile and 6 million users per month on tablets. Along with the milestone announcement, The Weather Channel is set to launch an update to a feature called “My Friends’ Weather,” which allows users to see who among their Facebook family and friends were affected by breaking weather news and national events. The update will allow users to see friends who may be affected by a local National Weather Service weather alert under effect in their area.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

IFC has promoted Colin Moore to VP/Digital Media & Alternative Content, effective immediately. He will be responsible for “extending IFC’s ‘slightly off’ sensibility to the digital world,” as well as overseeing strategy and operations for IFC.com, mobile apps, and partner websites that feature IFC content. He will also oversee original content creation for IFC.com, which includes web series like Reggie Makes Music, and will be in charge of the development and implementation of IFC’s social media strategy. Reporting to IFC’s SVP/Marketing, Blake Callaway, Moore will be based in the network’s NYC office.

Jared DiPalma has been promoted to Chief Financial Officer, a newly created position at NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media (E&DN/IM). In his new role, DiPalma will oversee all financial operations for the NBCUniversal division’s portfolio, which includes Bravo Media, Oxygen Media, Style, Sprout, Telemundo Media, mun2, and TV One, as well as native digital properties DailyCandy and Fandango. He will report to Lauren Zalaznick, Chairman of the division.

Evolve Media Corp.’s women’s lifestyle publishing property TotallyHer has appointed Rebecca Schmitt as its new VP and GM. She will be responsible for the vision, growth, and P&L of TotallyHer’s owned and operated sites and partner properties. She will be based in LA.

Media-buying platform provider Legolas Media has named Jonathan Shaevitz as its new Chief Executive Officer. The company says its platform offers a one-stop shop for buying of display, video, and mobile ads that can target 180 million unique users in the US alone.

Food Network has premiered Bobby Flay Fit, a new web series that aims to teach healthier eating and fitness habits. Comprised of seven episodes, with each scheduled to premiere every day of this week, the series aligns with the chef’s philosophy that “it only takes one week to create healthier habits with moderation and exercise.” The series will feature recipes, workouts, tips, and guests including Michael Symon and Katie Lee.
