Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

LG Electronics has purchased the webOS mobile operating system from Hewlett-Packard (HP) and will use it to power its future smart TVs. The deal, first reported by CNET, gives LG the source code and all “associated documentation” behind webOS, as well as the engineering team that’s been working on it. With the deal, LG also gets webOS-related licenses and patents that HP received from Palm when it acquired the OS for $1.2 billion back in July 2010. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Aereo, that little broadcast TV streaming start-up that could (and that’s been a thorn in the side of the major broadcast networks for retransmitting sans rights), is now available to more than 19 million residents across the greater NYC metropolitan area. The company says it still intends to expand to 22 additional markets in 2013.

Starz’s TV Everywhere services Starz Play and Encore Play are now available for Verizon FiOS customers. Those who subscribe to Starz and Encore as part of their TV package can access the premium channels’ movie libraries and original programming via the services’ websites and iOS apps, as well as through Verizon FiOS TV Online. Starz Play and Encore Play are US-based offerings, currently available through Wi-Fi and broadband connections. Support for Android is coming “in the future.”

Telemundo and Fandango have partnered to launch Fandango Cine, a new online and mobile web site for Hispanic movie fans. Integrated into existing Telemundo and Fandango sites, the site will offer original movie-related editorial and video programming in Spanish. New shows created specifically for Fandango Cine will debut in March and include Fandango Cine: En Taquillas (a Monday box office recap of the week’s English and Spanish language films); Fandango Cine: En Cartelera (a preview of the weekend’s upcoming movies); Pop Cine (industry news); and Cine Buzz (insider look at breaking news on Latinos in the movie industry). These segments will also run across Telemundo’s online, mobile, and TV platforms.

RTR Media has launched Coral, a new original YouTube channel for young, urban women. The channel will serve up informational and “how-to” videos on subjects like finance, health, wellness, household, culture, beauty, and technology. RTR Media has also announced that it’s struck a content deal with Sympatico to provide it with videos for its new lifestyle portal, Loop.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has unveiled the five winning interactive video ad units from its first-ever Digital Video Rising Stars competition, intended “to propel interactive digital video ad buys at the same scale and scope as typical online display buys.” They will undergo a testing process before they’re inducted into the IAB Standard Advertising Unit Portfolio. They are:

1.  Filmstrip (scrollable, multi-panel, horizontal unit)
2.  Ad Control Bar (sits above player controls offering users multiple engagement options)
3.  TimeSync (rich ad overlay on video, changing in sync with the video ad content)
4.  Extender (allows viewer to continue viewing ad content)
5.  Full Screen (enables viewer to expand ad to fill the screen and interact with other engagement features).

Ad solutions provider Tapad has moved its cross-screen Video ad product out of beta. Tapad says the product enables advertisers to buy desktop, mobile, and tablet video inventory, and then measure viewer conversion rates for those ad campaigns across computers, smartphones, tablets, and connected TVs.

Social analytics company Topsy has launched two new real-time alerting tools within its Topsy Pro Analytics platform. With Topsy Alerts, clients can receive immediate notifications about a topic before it starts trending. Topsy Reports is an email digest that provides executives with social data related to their brand as well as their competitors’.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Ericsson has launched a new end-to-end LTE Broadcast solution to help operators deliver high-quality video content to any mobile device without having to deal with issues like buffering. The solution consists of three tech standards: HEVC (compression standard that Ericsson says will cut the amount of bandwidth required to transport video by half, when compared to the MPEG-4 AVC standard); MPEG DASH (simplifies and standardizes adaptive delivery of video to devices); and eMBMS (enables mobile networks to offer broadcast/multicast services). Ericsson says Verizon plans to introduce Ericsson LTE Broadcast for entertainment and sporting events beginning in 2014.

The Next Generation Secure Memory Initiative (NSM), a coalition led by Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba, has launched SeeQVault, a flash memory-based content security specification for the storage and transportation of entertainment files and other data. SeeQVault is available for licensing to a broad range of companies, including consumer electronics manufacturers and entertainment content providers.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

A Nielsen study commissioned by the IAB finds that planning and running video ads online prior to TV boosts brand recall by 33% for that same ad playing on TV. What’s more, online video ads scored higher impact than TV ads when it came to general recall, brand recall, message recall, and ad likeability. Full episodes online were particularly effective on this front, says the study, with general recall being 39% higher for video ads during a full episode online than on TV. In addition, brand recall, message recall, and the ad likeability of ads during a full episode online were almost double that of TV commercials.

Social media activity during the Oscars was up 197% over least year, according to social TV insights platform Trendrr, which observed activity on Twitter, Facebook, GetGlue, and Viggle during Hollywood’s biggest night. In total, Oscar Sunday generated nearly 13.3 million social interactions, 11.12 million of which occurred during the broadcast. This makes the 2013 Academy Awards the third most social TV event of the year, sliding in behind the Super Bowl (52 million social interactions) and the Grammys (17 million). ~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Samsung has unveiled its Apple TV competitor. The manufacturer’s new HomeSync set-top device will allow users to stream video content, including movies and TV shows, from their Galaxy device to their TVs. The device will also let users access their Android apps; control the content on the TV using their Galaxy device; and store content from multiple devices as well as share that content with other family members. The device will be available in select countries beginning April 2013.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

Randy Kilgore, the current CRO of Tremor Video, has been selected as the new Chairman of the IAB Board of Directors. He succeeds Peter Naylor, EVP/Ad Sales, NBC News Digital. Vivek Shah, CEO of Ziff Davis, is the Board’s new Vice Chair.

Health and wellness media company Everyday Health has promoted Paul Slavin to the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer. Slavin will be responsible for strategy and operations across the company’s business units, including its news offering for consumers (EverydayHealth.com) and healthcare professionals (MedpageToday.com).

Local ad marketplace provider Reply.com has named David Wittenkamp as its new Chief Financial Officer.
