Good morning. It’s Tuesday, February 12, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Amazon has signed a licensing deal with CBS to stream the network’s upcoming series, Under the Dome, exclusively on Prime Instant Video – while it’s still in-season. Based on the Stephen King novel, and produced by CBS Television studios in association with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, Under the Dome will premiere on CBS on June 24. The show is set in a small New England town that’s suddenly cut off from the rest of the world by an enormous, transparent dome. Amazon Prime members will have exclusive access to each new episode four days after it airs on TV. Episodes will also be available for purchase or download exclusively through Amazon Instant Video.
Ever wanted to have a fireside chat with President Obama? Now you can. On Thursday, February 14, at 4:50p ET, the President will take part in a live Google+ Hangout to answer questions about tonight’s State of the Union address. The Fireside Hangout will include a group of preselected participants – but questions from the public will be in the mix, too. Those who want to submit a question to the President can do so via White House’s YouTube channel. The Hangout will air on The White House’s Google+ page and YouTube channel.
Stan Lee’s media and entertainment company, POW! Entertainment, has re-launched TheRealStanLee.com, with the aim of turning the website into a social media and digital content hub surrounding the comic book legend. Developed in partnership with Tenthwave, the new site will bring Lee’s fans the latest news on his POW! projects, as well as interviews, event appearances, personal video messages, and behind-the-scenes content. The site is armed with its own mini social network, through which fans can share blog posts, artwork, and other content with the community as well as Lee himself. POW! Entertainment has a partnership with Michael Eisner’s independent studio, Vuguru, under which both companies operate a YouTube original channel called Stan Lee’s World of Heroes.
BBC plans to broadcast TV shows online before airing them on TV this year, reports The Telegraph. The British broadcaster has decided to conduct a 12-month experiment in which it will put up 40 hours of TV programming online on BBC iPlayer, before any of it airs on TV. The report indicates that this decision was influenced, at least in part, by Netflix’s House of Cards. With that show being exclusive to Netflix, BBC wants to experiment with a new, digital-first release strategy to see if it can increase the number of viewers using BBC iPlayer. Per The Telegraph, the iPlayer app currently accounts for about 2% of all BBC viewership.
Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Starz have extended their exclusive first-run output premium pay TV deal through 2021. Per the deal, Starz will have exclusive pay TV rights to Sony’s theatrical releases, including titles from Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Classics, TriStar, and Screen Gems. The new deal encompasses all Starz platforms, from the company’s linear Starz and Encore channels to its online streaming services, Starz Play and Encore Play. The previous agreement covered Sony films released theatrically through 2016. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Yahoo reports that it has sold all premium inventory associated with the second and third seasons of Burning Love to one agency, PHD. This is the first time Yahoo has made such a sale to a single agency for an original program. According to a Yahoo spokesperson, “This agency-wide, multi-brand partnership will include deep integration of brands in the show, sponsorship, and media elements customized for Burning Love.” The second season premieres this Thursday, February 14, on Yahoo Screen. Created and written by Erica Oyama, the faux-reality show stars a long list of recognizable comedy names, including Ken Marino, Adam Scott, Paul Scheer, and Michael Ian Black.
Videology has launched a new predictive targeting solution, which works in conjunction with Nielsen’s Online Campaign Ratings (OCR) product to help advertisers measure performance of their online video campaigns. “There was an inherent challenge for advertisers who wanted to use the full range of data now available to enhance their targeting on the front end, yet chose to use a GRP approach to validate on the backend. In other words, it’s not ideal to target based on one set of data, and measure performance on a different set of data,” says Scott Ferber, Chairman and CEO of Videology. The company aims to bridge that divide by working directly with OCR, which uses privacy-protected data from 160 million Facebook users in the US to deliver age and gender demographics and generate GRPs. The new solution is available across online and mobile video campaigns, with several advertisers having already committed to using it in Q1 2013. Videology says it plans an international rollout, too. Right now OCR is available in the US and UK, with plans to expand into Canada and Australia in early 2013. The company reports that early case study testing produced a 336% lift against the targeted demo when measured by OCR, compared to an average 116% lift achieved using high composition/scalable site targeting.
The Australian Football League (AFL) has selected global digital video distribution company Rightster to design and launch AFLTV, a subscription service for AFL fans outside of Australia and New Zealand to watch live and on-demand AFL games. AFLTV will be the only service to offer access to every AFL game during the coming season. Per the deal, Rightster will provide the AFL with a solution to control online video distribution. Rightster will also manage user subscriptions for AFLTV, which will include Season Pass, Weekly Pass, Monthly Recurring Pass, Club-specific Pass, and Finals packages. The service will be available across a variety of devices, including PCs and Macs, mobile devices powered by iOS, and other HTML5-compatible smartphones and tablets.
TV search and recommendations provider ThinkAnalytics says it has increased its customer base to more than 40 operators and 100 million licensed subscribers. New customers include Cox Communications in the US, Swisscom, Unitymedia in Germany, Zon in Portugal, and Canal Digital in the Nordic region. The company’s Recommendations Engine enables broadcasters and operators to deliver personalized TV recommendations across multiple platforms, including the set-top box as well as second screens such as the web, smartphones, tablets, and OTT devices. Other major customers include Liberty Global, BSkyB, and Virgin Media.
Global media services agency ZenithOptimedia has released its latest New Media Forecast, which identifies the top 19 digital markets worldwide, ranking them based on a combination of absolute size and percentage of total ad spend devoted to the web. The report examines, among other things, how quickly new media technologies are being adopted across these 19 markets. According to ZenithOptimedia, smartphone penetration will double from 35.5% in 2012 to 71.7% in 2015. In addition, tablet penetration in these 19 markets will spike from 4.7% in 2012 to 13% in 2015, and IPTV penetration will rise from 6.6% to 9% within the same timeframe.Among the other data from the report:
- Norway was the top digital market in 2012 in terms of average penetration of new devices (38.8%).
- The Netherlands, which ranked third in this category in 2012 (35.1%), will rise to first place in 2015 (65.1%).
- Ireland will achieve the greatest growth within this category, rising from 11th place in 2012 (21%) to third place in 2015 (50.2%).
- As for the US, we ranked 12th in 2012 (19.4%) in terms of adoption of new media technologies, and are projected to fall to 14th in 2015 (30.8%).

Not done with Rightster just yet: The company has picked Scott Leishman to be its new Global VP/Talent and Resourcing. He comes to Rightster from Skype, where he built and managed a global recruitment team responsible for growing Skype’s Product and Engineering department.
NY-based branding and marketing communications house The Halo Group, has promoted Chris Barredo to the newly created position of VP/Brand Strategy. Barredo manages all phases of strategy development for Halo clients’ business goals, brand audits, research, and strategic direction. Jim Stotz has also received a promotion; he is now the Chief Financial Officer at the agency.
Correction: In yesterday’s Q&A with Monty Mullig and Ned Simon of CSE, we reported that CSE works with the Southeastern Conference (SEC). CSE produced an app for AT&T’s sponsorship of the SEC on CBS, instead of working directly for the SEC. The agency does work for the Southern Conference.

In advance of President Obama’s State of the Union tonight, NBC News has launched Flashpoint: Guns in America, a weeklong, multiplatform examination of gun violence, ownership, and legislation. For the program, NBC News journalists will report across NBC Nightly News, Today, MSNBC, CNBC, MSNBC.com, and NBC News and MSNBC social media platforms. NBCNews.com will feature the results of a comprehensive investigation into gun deaths to provide a snapshot on gun violence during MLK weekend. Beginning at 12:01am on January 19, NBC News with the help of NBC Owned Television Stations tracked and tallied every known gun death across the US, stopping at midnight on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 21. Looking at over 90 gun-related deaths that occurred over those three days, the network’s investigative team attempted to determine the cause and motive behind each one. The site also features an interactive map documenting the location of each death, as well as other multimedia content.
