AT&T and the Department of Justice have agreed to put their legal battle over the wireless carrier’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA on hold until January. The move was initiated by the DOJ, which requested a stay in the proceedings after AT&T withdrew its application with the FCC over the proposed merger. In a statement, the Justice Department requested a “status conference” be held on January 18, 2012, where AT&T can announce its next move in the ongoing battle. AT&T also issued a statement saying that it will still be working with T-Mobile USA and parent Deutsche Telekom on “whether and how to revise our current transaction to achieve the necessary regulatory approvals.” As a side note, Dish Network CEO Joseph Clayton said in an interview with Bloomberg that if the AT&T/T-Mobile deal were to fail, the satellite provider would seek a partnership with T-Mobile in order to combine both companies’ wireless spectrum. “We want to use [our spectrum] to create a national wireless network, video, voice and data,” Clayton said.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Barnes & Noble’s latest update to the Nook Color tablet will include apps for Netflix and Flixster. The update will roll out automatically over Wi-Fi later this week; however, enterprising Nook Color owners who want access to the update sooner can download the zip file that Barnes & Noble made available yesterday.

Bud United Presents: The Big Time, a social reality TV show from Budweiser that was cast from video applications submitted on the company’s social media sites, will debut on ABC on January 21, 2012. The reality show allows contestants to fulfill lifelong dreams through training from experts in that specific sport or field. For example, a contestant who has always dreamt of driving a race car will get coached by racing legend Richard Childress and driver Kevin Harvick. The show is being produced under Budweiser’s Bud United banner, a “global experiential platform connecting consumers’ passion points with the brand.” All seven episodes of the show will air every Saturday following the early 2012 premiere.

As per a new agreement between Hulu and BBC Worldwide America, the first two seasons of Mongrels will be available to U.S. audiences on Hulu and Hulu Plus. The British puppet-based adult comedy series follows the recent debut of British sci-fi series Misfits, which arrived to the States under a similar deal between BBC Worldwide America and Hulu.

Todobebe, Inc., an independent producer of family-friendly entertainment for Hispanic audiences, has launched a new channel on YouTube for Hispanic moms, called Todofamilia . The channel will draw from over 1,000 hours of original short-form content across relevant topics for Hispanic families and mothers such as parenting, kids, funniest home videos, celebrity interviews and more.

Hearst Digital Media‘s and MSN‘s Delish.com has re-launched with a new logo and color scheme, simplified navigation, search features and advertising options. The site revamp also integrates HTML5 compatibility into the homepage’s video player enabling access from mobile devices and tablets. Delish.com reaches more than 6 million unique visitors per month.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

SOASTA’s cloud-based app performance testing technology ensures the functionality and reliability of consumer-facing mobile and web-based applications regardless of scale. The company has announced a $12 million round of funding led by The Entrepreneurs’ Fund, with additional investment from existing investors such as Canaan Partners and Formative Ventures. In 2011, SOASTA’s client base exceeded 3,000 customers and its testing software expanded reach internationally to include the U.S., Canada, China, U.K., Germany, Japan and more.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Resonate Networks has introduced Insights Driven Media, a new advertising platform that enables brand marketers to develop targeted campaigns based on customer values. Instead of focusing only on data sets such as demographics and online behavior, which the company deems as less effective in influencing purchase behavior, insights on consumer values are given the spotlight. Resonate also reports that Insights Driven Media is over 10 times more effective in delivering online ad performance when compared to third party data companies such as Exelate and Bluekai.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Facebook has published Memology 2011, a report covering the year’s biggest trending topics on the social network. House, M.D. was the most talked-about TV show on Facebook, with Two and a Half Men, The Simpsons, Family Guy and South Park rounding out the top five in that order. Dr. Gregory House was also the most talked-about fictional character on the social network. Facebook compiled the data based on user status updates.

According to the latest eMarketer estimate, adults in the U.S. spend more time with their mobile phones than print magazines and newspapers combined. The time spent on mobile phones and the internet categories saw a 30% and 7.7% increase over 2010, respectively. However, traditional TV viewing still remains the top dog among U.S. adults’ media platforms of choice as they spend an average of 4 hours and 34 minutes watching TV or video on a traditional television set, which itself is an increase of 10 minutes over 2010. The report also notes that the shift in ad spending does not yet reflect the shifting trends of the U.S. consumer. For example, while mobile commands a 10%-plus share of adults’ media time per day, it only receives 1% of ad dollars.

November proved to be a notable month for CNBC Digital. CNBC.com generated the most page views and unique visitors in the site’s history. According to comScore’s Media Metrix data, CNBC’s website amassed 7.3 million unique visitors and 373 million page views in November, which are increases of 24% and 35%, respectively, over November 2010. CNBC Mobile also did well; the channel’s real-time iPhone app achieved 79 million page views, a 90% increase year-over-year. In similar fashion, CNBC’s real-time Android app saw a 47% increase in page views year-over-year and CNBC Mobile Web recorded 78 million page views, a 29% increase over November 2010).

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The NBC Nightly News mobile app is now available on the Android Market. The free app delivers the latest NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams broadcast, videos of individual segments from the program and other top news stories from NBCNightlyNews.com and headlines from MSNBC.com.

Guess with Jess, a Canadian and British educational television series for pre-school aged children, now has a mobile app, which is currently available for 1.99 pounds in the Apple App Store. Created by interactive games publisher P2 Games, the app extends the learning-centric nature of the TV show onto the mobile platform via 10 mini-games and activities designed to help kids ask and discover answers to questions such as “Why do spiders build webs?” and “How do beans grow?”

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Tremor Video has appointed Todd Sloan as Chief Financial Officer. An experienced CFO for over a decade at private and public digital media companies such as About.com, Sloan will oversee all of Tremor’s finances. The independent online video technology company has also promoted CMO Melinda McLaughlin to Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer. Most recently, McLaughlin led the company’s rebranding efforts. At her new post, she will continue to oversee all research and marketing initiatives for Tremor Video, and will now report directly to CEO Bill Day.

Social media ad platform MediaBrix has hired Aimee Campbell for the newly-created position of Director of Sales for the Midwest Region; and will be based in Chicago. Alison Starr is also coming on board in the newly-created position of Director of Sales for the West Coast Region; she will be based in Los Angeles. Echoing these two appointments, Adam Francisco Eldridge has been promoted to Director of Sales for the East Region. Another newly-created position, Eldridge will be headquartered in New York.

LiveIntent, a company that provides a real-time display ad platform for email, has made several additions to its executive team. Jon Beck will join the company as VP of Publisher Development; Rob Adler will come on board as National Sales Director; and David Katz will take the post of Director of Business Development. Beck will be in charge of overall publisher relations and will lead a team of publisher development managers. Adler will manage the demand-side team at LiveIntent and will be responsible for ad sales revenue. Katz will oversee the development of product goals and partnerships with agencies, while also leading LiveIntent’s integrations with technology partners.

Mick Oppy will be the Director of Mobile Products at online Q&A service provider ChaCha. As he already led the development of ChaCha’s app for Android 4.0, Oppy will remain on that path at his new position; he will oversee the development of new products and the maintenance of current ChaCha mobile apps and services.

BBC.com has officially launched its 2012 Election Hub and represents the website’s first step towards snaring a greater presence in North America via a more dedicated focus on the upcoming presidential elections. What does it offer to ensure that you’re kept up-to-date on the path to the next election? Well, quite a lot. Aside from need-to-know information on each Republican candidate, the site also offers resources on who is backing which candidate, the election campaign calendar, a guide to the caucuses and primaries, information on the Electoral College and even a glossary on U.S. elections. The hub will feature original video content throughout the election. It’s not a bad bookmark to have until the tail end of 2012.
