Giving in to the unstoppable growth of HTML5 favored by Apple devices, Adobe unveiled a public preview of its Edge HTML5 web motion design tool – enabling designers to add animated content using HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript instead of its proprietary Flash technology that will finally work on the iPhone or iPad. It is being positioned to complement Flash rather than replace it. The move comes a little over a year after Steve Jobs spelled out why Apple’s mobile devices decided not to support Flash.


Yahoo Sports has teamed with Houston-based Gow Broadcasting to create the terrestrial Yahoo Sports Radio Network, launching on over 180 affiliated radio stations across the country as well as on Sirius and other digital and mobile platforms. The station will replace Gow’s Sporting News Radio stations.
myLifetime.com recorded its best season premiere day yet in terms of unique visitors and page views with the return of Project Runway on Thursday, improving 19% and 95%, respectively, on the previous record set from season 6. Project Runway also topped Trendrr TV’s Daily Cable Top 10 Social Television Chart, doubling its closest competitor in social media conversations.
Exercise TV is hearkening back to those beach-side morning workout shows with Beach Bootcamp, a new 10 episode fitness series premiering today on demand and online.


Twitter has announced another “significant” round of funding from Russian venture capital firm Digital Sky Technologies (an investor in Facebook, Groupon and Zynga,) along with several existing investors. The amount of funding was not disclosed, but earlier reports have said that the microblogging company was seeking a $400 million round that would value the company at around $8 billion. Twitter now delivers some 200 million Tweets a day, up from 65 million a year ago, and helps power over 1 million mobile apps.
Personalizing deal discovery service ChoozOn, founded by a trio of former Yahoo executives, has closed on a $3.2 million round of Series A funding from U.S. and international investors. The Bellevue, WA-based start-up has also added lead investors Michael Orsak of Worldview Technology Partners and James Brown of AVG Ventures to its Board of Directors. The site enables consumer to create their own “deal networks” to manage various deal services, loyalty programs and brand offers and find targeted deals based on their favorite brands.


Marketers could begin to see digital video viewership metrics combined in C3 ratings (commercial ratings + 3 DVR playback days) as early as next year’s upfront, according to Group M’s Chief Investment Officer Rino Scanzoni, as quoted in Mediapost. The move is expected to hasten the trend to carry full commercial loads in online programming, as pioneered by The CW last season.


Could Apple be readying a cloud-based streaming service? An Apple TV software update will enable users to stream previously-purchased TV shows directly from the iTunes store instead of having to access your home computer’s hard drive for the files. To update your Apple TV, go to Settings, General then Update Software and follow the directions.
Google, which went after and failed to get Groupon for $6 billion, acquired San Francisco-based daily deal provider Dealmap for an undisclosed amount. Dealmap counts more than 2 million users via web, social and email.
IAC’s video sharing site Vimeo has added a professional video hosting service geared toward small businesses at the bargain price of $199/year for 50GB of storage and 250k video plays/year. In a separate bit of news, Vimeo’s video content has also been added to the Apple TV device, accessible through the above-mentioned update.


Hard-to-reach upper income folks ($100k+ annual income) are more accessible to marketers using digital media than more traditional media, according a new IAB study conducted by Ipsos Mendelsohn. They’re nearly all online (compared to 79% for the general population) and they spend 26.2 hours online on the internet, compared to 17.6 hours watching TV and 7.5 hours listening to the radio. And they tend to recall more ads and to be more aware of advertised brands, products and services. Some 88% of affluent consumers recalled being exposed to one or more digital ads during the previous week, compared with 84% of non-affluent internet users. Within these groups, affluents recalled 21.1 ads on average, versus 20.2 for non-affluents. Another 59% of affluent consumers reported taking action based on a digital ad during the preceding six months. Affluents prefer relevant advertising and are more likely to share personal information in exchange for a personalized online experience.
Women, African Americans and older viewers all over-index in TV viewing, according to Nielsen‘s quarterly Cross-Platform Report.

  • Women watch some 16 hours of traditional TV than men, but males spend more time watching online video
  • African-Americans view nearly 213 hours of TV per month, more than twice as much as Asians and roughly 57 hours more than Whites. African-Americans also watch the most mobile video, though less time-shifted TV than the general population
  • Asians view far more online video than other groups, averaging six-plus hours more per month than Whites and nearly four hours more per month than the next closest ethnic group, Hispanics. Asians also watch far less traditional TV than the general population
  • Hispanics watch less traditional TV but more internet video than the general population, but not at the level of the Asian population



Best Buy
is rolling out its own in house Connected TV label based on Tivo‘s vaunted user interface viewers can use to search and browse for shows. Branded “Insignia,” the LED smart TVs will ship in 32” and 42” models ($499 and $699 respectively) and allow users to access content apps from providers including Netflix, CinemaNow, YouTube, Pandora, Napster and Chumby. This marks the first time the Tivo interface has been available as a white label solution without a monthly subscription.
A new membership-based fashion site from Amazon, MyHabit.com, has launched its own iPhone app providing access to curated designer-label sales beginning daily at 12 noon ET/ 9 am PT.


ESPN‘s Chuck Pagano, hired as the networks 25th employee as Technical Director back in 1979, has been elevated to the new position of EVP & Chief Technology Officer. He will lead all of ESPN’s core technical functions and operations including distribution, transmission, engineering, IT, software development, technology innovation and strategic technology forecasting, reporting to George Bodenheimer, President of ESPN and ABC Sports.
Universal Sports Network has named Elliott Gordon as VP and GM of Digital Media. The former NFL Digital Media director will oversee all digital initiatives for Universal Sports, including digital operations, product development, sales production, and vendor management, reporting to Perkins Miller, COO of Universal Sports.
3D technology provider RealD has elected former Sonic Solutions CEO Dave Habiger to its Board of Directors.
