Yesterday, YouTube’s ZEFER and Fuisz Media announced a deal to feature a technology that allows video viewers to click on an object in a video and link directly to the appropriate site to purchase the item. The pixel technology will be the first of its kind for YouTube, and in addition to creating a new revenue stream, the compiled data will help brands analyze user consumption habits and increase brand awareness. No launch date has yet been announced.
The Reddit community is slamming a Samsung dongle device television ad for what it’s calling cheesy, stereotypical portrayals of consumers, including a geeky Asian man and a birdbrain housewife. After more than 2000 Reddit comments ripped the Samsung SSD 840 EVO commercial in the last three days, the company took down the video from YouTube, but made no comment.
Yahoo may not have broken past the Google gates after all. The data that suggested Yahoo was the top publisher in July with 196.6 million US visitors (vs. Google’s 192.3 million) could be invalid, reports Ad Age. That’s because Yahoo uses comScore’s tracking tag method, but Google does not. Still, neither of these measurements includes mobile visitors, which can account for 40 to 50 percent of users.

NEW PROGRAMMING & DEALS
Turner Broadcasting System’s digital brand aimed at the growing tide of health-conscious consumers – and the marketers who want to target them – is headed for television. Now comprised of a web site as well as YouTube and social media channels, and touting itself as “a robust healthy living destination for consumers and advertisers,” Upwave will add a two-hour programming block on Turner’s HLN starting in December, Sundays at 7p.
A short film made entirely of Vine videos shot by people all over the world is the goal of room-share service Airbnb’s project “Hollywood and Vines.” After following instructions issued at #AirbnbHV, the selected filmmakers’ submissions will be featured on the Sundance Channel, and they will also receive a $100 Airbnb credit. The final compilation of clips, meant to support Airbnb’s mission of “travel, adventure, and finding your place in the world” will be posted on the Hollywood and Vines website and air on the Sundance Channel on Sept. 12.
MTV’s Video Music Awards set Twitter records by clocking in 306,000 tweets per minute during the Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke performances. The show’s viewership also jumped by 66 percent from last year’s broadcast (with a 10.1 million tuning in), with some of the highest ratings among the 12-34 age range.
The set-top box and dongle market is expected to surpass the sale of 18 million units by the end of 2013, according to a recent First Screen Video Devices Research Service Study. The study credits the boom to the arrival of the Google Chromecast, and is expected to continue with a 10.8 percent growth rate in the market in the next five years. The study also claims that it’s only a matter of time before the set-top box and dongle transform the cable industry all together, once cablers start offering live services for both technologies.
In Vine-o Veritas! And by that we mean that Vine is now being used to break news: witness the Vine of a truck soaring over a Michigan freeway guardrail that was shared by dozens of news outlets in the past week. The trend, says Mashable, began in April during the Boston Bombings, a mere three months after Vine was introduced.
The Tennis Channel has debuted a TV Everywhere app to accompany the 2013 U.S. Open, which starts this week. Offered in partnership with Verizon Fios TV and the National Cable Television Cooperative, viewers can watch the linear stream of every volley and rally on online, mobile, and tablet devices. The network decided to officially launch the app after a successful free trial run during the French Open.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced he is retiring from the company within the next year. Ballmer’s leave comes at the tail of Microsoft’s management overhaul and a disappointing quarterly earnings report.
Antony Young is jumping from his global business development role at Mindshare, where until last month he was CEO, to become president of the newly formed Water Cooler Group. The company, whose specialties include media planning, content development social media and interactive television, is formed of agencies Bolt, Hip Genius, Maude and Media Storm. Clients of the holding group include MTV, Food Network and WE tv.
