Good Morning, it’s Tuesday, August 21, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Viacom’s Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG announced they are abandoning Sony’s HD Blu-ray format and will instead only release high definition DVDs in the competing HD DVD format. The decision is quite a reversal for Blue-ray, which had been outselling HD DVDs in the U.S. and Europe by 2 to 1 according to reports. The format war reminiscent of the fight between Betamax and VHS – has been blamed for slowing adoption of high definition discs. But it will likely continue to drag on as Sony, Disney and Fox remain in the Blue-ray camp. Meanwhile Warner Home Video, which set high definition records this month selling over 250,000 copies of the historical epic 300, will continue to release DVDs in both formats.
ESPN.com launched Fantasy Football 101, an instructional web site designed to help players successfully draft and manage their fantasy football teams. The tutorial, hosted by a digitized Trey Wingo, features video clips of ESPN’s fantasy sports coverage broken down by category including pre-draft, value players, set your rankings and survey the field. Each section even tests users’ knowledge with a fantasy quiz.
ESPN’s Monday Night Football franchise also announced a new user generated video feature. Beginning with the final preseason game next Monday, two testimonials will be aired each week as fans predict why their team will win and what viewers should look for in the game.
CBS Mobile is offering full-length episodes of the Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on Verizon’s on demand video service V Cast, starting from today. Each night’s programs will be broken down into shorts for easy mobile digestion.
Turner Sports New Media‘s PGATour.com is gearing up for the first-ever PGA Tour FedEx Cup Playoffs with a fresh redesign and an improved video player that will provide streaming video coverage of one signature hole for each tournament. The site also launched a Playoff Fantasy Game sponsored by MasterCard, asking users to pick four players to score surrogate points. Golf fans should hurry – registration for the game ends tomorrow.
Food Network is partnering with food portal cooking.com to launch a new e-commerce site that will greatly expand the network’s online storefront. FoodNetworkStore.com, set to launch October 1, will offer over 20,000 cooking-related products for sale integrated with recipes, videos and search on FoodNetwork.com. Interactive features such as user generated videos and product reviews are also planned.
AMC and music/movie retailer f.y.e. announced a new multiplatform campaign to identify viewers’ favorite movies, genres, actors and scenes. The campaign includes an online poll on amc.com and an online sweepstakes that will award f.y.e. gift cards. AMC will air sweeps bumpers starting August 27 to promote the poll.
MySpace is hosting the fourth annual Projekt Revolution concert tomorrow at 4:30 pm ET, streaming bands such as Linkin Park and My Chemical Romance live from partner NowWhat’s profile page. Interactive features include live mobile video contributions from selected fans who will be given Nokia “ComVu Pocketcaster” cell phones to shoot videos at the show.
Dining/travel guide publishers Zagat launched an ad supported mobile website featuring restaurant, bar and hotel reviews for major U.S. cities and select international destinations. The Zagat.mobi site is accessible with any WAP-enabled phone. Visa Signature has signed on as exclusive launch sponsor for the first 2 months.
Google revealed it has acquired a stake in Chinese social networking site Tiaya.cn in its battle to compete with dominant local search company Baidu.com. In partnership with Tiaya, Google launched two new services: networking site Laiba and Q&A site Wenda.
IPTV set top box start-up Building B raised $17.5 million from Morgenthaler Ventures, Omni Capital, Index Ventures and others. The venture plans to launch yet another device to bridge the internet with the television. The company, founded by Bruno Pati and former Sony Corp. of America CTO Phil Weiser, is working on a set top that will stream HDTV content from the net to the TV without a PC.
The New York Television Festival announced the winners of its Proctor & Gamble Productions-sponsored sketch comedy talent search. The three winning skits will be showcased at the fest (which runs Sept. 5 – Sept. 9) where members of the comedy troupes will be combined to form a new collaborative group. An entry on the Skype Blog explained what went wrong last week. Apparently a new Windows software update that required users to reboot their software overtaxed Skype’s servers and peer-to-peer network resources.
Interactive ad agency Marketingworks (MWKS) says it was able to target the highly defined audience segment of urban African American males aged 18-24 in its latest digital word-of-mouth campaign for the Toyota’s Yaris by implementing “geo targeting” techniques. MWKS spread awareness of the car by sponsoring a 4-city Hip Hop DJ competition and appointing “brand ambassadors” who entered influential social networks, chat rooms, blogs, message boards and video sharing sites to help create buzz.
comScore launched a new search measurement tool to try and better define searches conducted across multiple sites in and outside of the U.S. The company will add the qSearch 2.0 report to aggregate partner and cross-channel searches in the total for each property. Mr. Long Tail himself Chris Anderson and partners launched BookTour.com, a free online service to connect authors with potential readers. BookTour offers a place where writers can create profiles to make it easy for bookstores and conventioneers to contact them to arrange appearances or learn about their latest works. The homepage automatically determines which authors are appearing in your area and employs tools such as Google Calendar and Google Earth to help keep you up to date.
