Cynopsis: Kids!
08/17/10
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Metrodome Group ( www.metrodomegroup.com ), a UK-based indie film distributor, completes its acquisition of rights manager and producer/distributor Target Entertainment ( www.targetentertainmentgroup.com ) in a deal valued at about US$1.2 million. Under the deal, Metrodome will acquire shares of both of Target’s rights, which includes its distribution and consumer products groups, and its film and entertainment production labels, Pink Sands and Target US. Not included as part of the transaction is Target’s production arm, Greenlit. Metrodome says it “has committed to significantly invest in the company,” which will include spending US$4.7 million. Alison Rayson, Target’s founder, will stay on as CEO of Target and will also serve as a member on Metrodome’s Board. Among kid-targeted properties, Target Entertainment handles international distribution for the preschool-targeted Fifi and the Flowertots.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
The Jim Henson Company begins production on a second season of Wilson & Ditch: Digging America for PBSKidsGo.org ( www.pbskidsgo.org ). Targeted to K6-10, Wilson & Ditch: Digging America ( www.pbskids.org/wilsonandditch ) follows the adventures of two gophers on their cross-country adventure, in a green powered van, during which they learn about American culture, history and geography and offering their experiences and resources to real kids/families online. Also featured are interactive games, blogs, comics and podcasts from the brothers. In addition to exploring a host of different US cities and attractions, the new season will also bring new music by the GoBros and two new online games, as well as new and updated local information (attractions, history, food etc.). Created by Joe Purdy (story editor, Dinosaur Train and Sid the Science Kid) and Craig Bartlett (creator, Dinosaur Train, Hey Arnold!), the project is funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).
In its earnings report presentation yesterday 4Kids Entertainment‘s Chairman and CEO, Al Kahn explained the company has revised its deal with The CW Network for its five-hour Saturday morning programming block, which “should be more favorable to the Company going forward.” 4Kids is re-branding the Saturday morning block (7a-12p) as Toonzai on CW 4Kids beginning this fall. The block, which has had various names over the last several years, is currently titled TheCW4Kids. Toonzai will target boys with its programming line up of Japanese animated series, including new episodes of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s and Dragon Ball Z Kai, in addition to returning series Sonic X, Dinosaur King and classic Yu-Gi-Oh! 4Kids Entertainment’s net revenues for second quarter (ending June 30, 2010) were $2.5 million, compared to $3.6 million for the same time period in 2009. Kahn explained that despite a difficult second quarter as revenue across 4Kids’ different business segments coming in below expectations, “the company, however, did benefit in the second quarter from various strategic cost cutting measures implemented over the past year.” 4Kids is continuing to explore strategic options, with the board currently in discussions with several companies that may be interested in investing and/or acquiring 4Kids.
Peanuts Worldwide, a joint venture of Iconix Brand Group and Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, enters into a new five-year deal with ABC Network for the a number of the beloved Peanuts animated holiday specials. Specials included under the deal are A Charlie Brown Christmas, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. The Peanuts specials have aired on ABC for the last nine years. The Peanuts comic strip celebrates its 60th anniversary this fall.

Discovery Health will host Adventures in Parenting week September 13-17, which will look at the lives of various families faced with a range of challenges. While these programs are not targeted to kids, they do focus on different types of families, parents/parenting, kids, as well as other family members, and their respective issues and coping skills. Each night Adventures in Parenting will profile different parents. Premiering as part of Discovery Health’s Adventures in Parenting are: Tourette’s Uncovered is a one-hour special about four different kids with Tourette’s, each manifesting the disease in different ways, and their parents; 8 Boys Wanting A Girl is a documentary that explores the debate about parents using science to select the gender of the child as well as issues of gender identity; Deadly Decisions at 13 looks at 13-year-old Hannah’s decision to forgo what could be a lifesaving heart transplant and the legal battle that ensued; My Child Won’t Talk focuses on kids with selective mutism, meaning for instance they can speak fine in the comfort of their own homes, meanwhile in public social anxiety prevents them form speaking at all; My Kid’s Smarter Than Me – the program looks at the challenges of parenting truly genius kids (3-15 years-old); Big Kids the one-hour special looks at obesity in America and the lives of two obese kids and their efforts to improve their health and lives; Paralyzed and Pregnant: Four Years Later the program re-visits a quadriplegic mother who beat the odds and gave birth to a baby boy four years ago.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Turner CN Enterprises heads to Brand Licensing Europe 2010 next month where it will debut its licensing program for Cartoon Network‘s original action/adventure animated series Generator Rex. Mattel has already signed on as the global toy partner for the brand, while Activision is set as the worldwide interactive partner. CN Enterprises expects to announce a number of new licensees for the brand across EMEA soon. The series, which launched on Cartoon Network in the US in April 2010, is also set to debut across EMEA beginning with Cartoon Network in the UK this October 2010, followed by other markets in 2011. Product is scheduled to rollout in the UK in Q2 2011 and across EMEA from Q4 2011.
