Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/05/11
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, April 5, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
If you received one of those security breach emails over the weekend, chances are it wasn’t a hoax. Epsilon, the largest distributor of permission-based email in the world responsible for sending 40 billion+ credit card, hotel and financial marketing emails each year, announced that millions of its individual email addresses were exposed in a malicious attack on its servers. The company says only 2% of its client base was affected by the attack, but several well-known retailers warned customers yesterday that their email addresses and names may have been compromised by hackers in the wide-scale data breach. Rod Rasmussen, CTO at Internet Identity and the industry liaison for the Anti-Phishing Working Group, believes that the Epsilon breach will lead to an increase in “spear phishing” attacks, as phishers pose as trusted friends to gain your personal info, according to Krebs on Security blogger Brian Krebs.
Montreal-based music service provider Stingray Digital acquired London-based Music Choice Europe Ltd. from a European private investment group for an undisclosed sum. Music Choice operates 70 music channels with over 10 million subscribers across 17 countries in Europe and Africa.
Oxygen Media and Broadcastr announced plans to kick off their new location-based partnership with exclusive content on “The World According to Paris” augmented reality app, narrated by Paris Hilton. Paris will share details about her 10 favorite places around the world. Oxygen says digital revenues increased 63% y/y in 2010 with a 51% gain in online uniques and a 120% gain in mobile monthly uniques and credited products such as its OxygenLive TV platform with boosting linear ratings.
Patricia Heaton is starring with her husband David Hunt in the actor/director’s Versailles (pr. “ver-sayles”), the newest original web series premiering May 9 from My Damn Channel. It’s about a brother and sister team who are launching a public access sports show to escape from the shadow of their dear departed mother, TV star and B-movie actress Evelyn Anders (Heaton). Martha MacIsaac, Fred Willard and William H. Macy also make cameos.
Alloy Entertainment is also premiering a new web series today, Talent, based on the book of same name from best selling author Zoey Dean. It follows Alexandra Chando (ABC Family’s The Lying Game) and singer/songwriter BC Jean as they move to Hollywood to try and break into the cutthroat music biz. New episodes will air each Tuesday and Thursday through May 5.
Congrats to this year’s International Digital Emmy Awards, unveiled yesterday by The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at MIPTV in Cannes:
- HIGHRISE: Out My Window (National Film Board of Canada), an interactive web doc about high-rises and the folks who live in them, won in the Non-Fiction Category
- Battlefront II (Raw TV/Airlock for Channel 4), which follows 12 young people running campaigns to change the world, won in the Children & Young People Category
- Shankaboot (Batoota films/BBC World Service Trust), a web series exploring social problems in Arab World won in the Fiction Category
- The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers creator Jon M Chu won the Pioneer Prize for innovative contributions to the field of digital entertainment
Video ad network Visible Measures introduced a new ad platform that enables advertisers to influence audience choice and organic sharing for video ads. The company will leverage its Viral Reach database to allow advertisers to buy user-initiated views in social video to reach an expected level of brand-related sharing it calls “Earned Media.” The platform ultimately measures a campaign’s “True Reach” by combining paid and earned media results across a network of over 300 video destination sites. The company has hired Steven Carter, formerly of Tremor Media and ScanScout, to run the Viewable Media division as GM.
Rovi Corp. is announcing the field trial for a new Smart TV ad program this morning that will allow advertisers and agencies to launch campaigns across multiple connected TVs, Blu-ray players and other devices without having to do all the heavy lifting of individual integrations. Interactive ads placed by Carnival cruise lines and NY-based ITV specialist Briteline will deploy across Samsung Smart TVs and Blu-ray players (within its new “Smart Hub” content interface) for the time being, with ads beginning to appear this week and more CE integrations in the planning stages. Contextual ads, based on geography, demography and programming type, will appear in multiple screens, including one that presents content recommendations to viewers. A click on the ad sends viewers to minisites featuring clickable, actionable video.
Adap.tv, BrightRoll, Google, SpotXchange, TubeMogul and YuMe were among the first 17 ad networks and exchanges to win the IAB‘s new seal of approval designed to improve transparency and create a safer online haven for brand advertisers. The Ad Network & Exchange Quality Assurance Certification program consists of training programs, extensive audits and appointments of a compliance officer to maintain “Quality Assurance” guidelines.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) promised the imminent release of a new version of a controversial bill to combat online piracy on Monday that takes into account First Amendment concerns raised when the committee passed an initial version of the bill last year. The MPAA and a broad group of industry guilds representing 300,000 creative professionals including AFTRA, The DGA, SAG and IATSE voiced their support.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia dismissed a lawsuit brought by Verizon and Metro PCS against the FCC to stop the commission from imposing “net neutrality” rules on the wireless sector. The court ruled it was too early to file suit against the FCC because the agency hadn’t yet published its new regulations.
California State Senator Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, unveiled proposed legislation sponsored by Consumer Watchdog yesterday that would force internet companies doing business in the state to provide consumers with a way to opt out of online monitoring.
Some 69% of marketers and 55% of agencies plan to increase their Digital Video Advertising spend by 22% in the next year, leading to a 22% growth spurt in digital video ads, according to a new study released by the IAB and conducted by Advertiser Perceptions. Marketers, who mostly still prefer 15-second pre-rolls among DVA formats, say they will migrate TV ad dollars to digital video based on the belief it will deliver better ROI; agencies and television decision makers will shift ad dollars in an attempt to follow their target audiences.
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has been named to the Board of FarmVille creator Zynga, joining MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, former EA exec Bing Gordon, Foundry Group managing director Brad Feld and Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus.
NBCUniversal named former KGO-TV President and GM Valari Dobson Staab as President of the NBC Local Media group, which includes NBC’s O&O’s, online properties, lifestyle programming company LX.TV and in house marketing firm Skycastle Entertainment. NBCU also upped former Local Media head John Wallace to President, NBCUniversal Media Works, who will continue to oversee the Local Media group until Valari officially joins the company in June. She reports to Ted Harbert, the new Chairman of NBC Broadcasting and John reports to Pat Fili-Krushel, EVP, NBCUniversal.
Former MSN International Programming Director Peter Bale has been tapped by CNN to serve as VP and GM of CNN International Digital, reporting to CNN Digital SVP and GM KC Estenson from London beginning in late spring. In this new position Peter will lead the effort to expand CNN Digital’s reach abroad, overseeing content, product, digital distribution and partnerships.
Internet Broadcasting has named season technology executive Elmer Baldwin as President and CEO, finally replacing David Lebow who left the local media online services company during the middle of last year. Elmer most recently served as CEO of Minneapolis-based IT services provider Analysts International Corp.
Alloy Entertainment named veteran television executive, Michael Ross as COO, a new position at the company overseeing operations across television, film, digital, and publishing, product licensing and merchandising. He will split his time between Alloy’s New York and LA offices, reporting to CEO Leslie Morgenstein.
Kent Rees has been appointed as EVP/Marketing for Current Media as it prepares to embark upon its Keith Olbermann era. He moves over from IFC where he was SVP/Marketing.
Initiative promoted Dave Rosner to EVP/Director Innovations. Tiffany Wagner has also been promoted to VP, Innovations East, working under Dave. Mr. Rosner reports to Shane Ankeney, EVP, Managing Director, Initiative U.S.
Rich Juzwiak has joined its editorial staff of TVGuide.com as Senior Editor. He will cover reality TV and web video, reporting to Mickey O’Connor, Managing Editor.

New York-based digital agency Wiredset has developed a new social tracking chart to measure the buzz cable and broadcast TV shows are generating on social networks. Trendrr.tv will feature weekly rankings of the top 10 broadcast and cable shows based on how many mentions, tweets or “check-ins” each show received on Facebook, Twitter as well as on social TV apps Miso and Get Glue. (Wiredset’s premium Trendrr service adds several additional data points including most anticipated shows, positive/negative sentiment and engagement.) This week Fox’s Glee quadrupled the nearest competition attracting nearly 1.5 million actions while MTV’s Jersey Shore led among cable shows.
