Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 24, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Nickelodeon will premiere Rags, its new original TV movie starring Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP, Joyful Noise, Akeelah and the Bee) and Max Schneider (How to Rock), on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 at 8p. Beginning May 22, the Rags soundtrack, which features nine songs from the movie and three bonus songs, will be available via all digital service providers. Viewers can watch music videos and catch a sneak peek at clips from the movie, as well as photos, at Nick.com. Following the premiere, Rags will be available via iTunes, Xbox, Playstation Store, Amazon Instant Video and Vudu. Set in NYC, Rags offers a modern, music-based spin on the Cinderella story about a teen Charlie Prince (Schneider), who lives with his unloving stepdad and spoiled stepbrothers, and whose dream of being a singer just might come true when he meets Kadee Worth, an international pop star and daughter of a music mogul (Palmer). The movie is executive produced by Nick Cannon, as well as Nick’s Marjorie Cohn, Laruen Levine (Bridge to Terabithia, Best Player) and Jessica Rhoades (Best Player, Spectacular!) in addition to Michael Goldman. Rags is directed by Billy Woodruff (Beauty Shop, Honey) and features original music by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (American Idol, Lady Gaga, Beyonce) and choreography by Rosero McCoy (America’s Best Dance Crew). Based on a screenplay by Jason Fuchs, Elizabeth Hackett and Hilary Galanoy, the TV movie is produced by Scott McAboy’s Pacific Bay Entertainment. Palmer is also a producer on the project.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Actor Steve Carell is set to produce a new animated feature film, The Tower Ravens, under his Carousel Productions banner for Warner Bros., per Toon Barn. Carousel’s Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock will serve as executive producers for The Tower Ravens, which is being written by Jim Cooper (TV series How to Train Your Dragon). Courtenay Valenti will executive produce for Warner Bros. Carell has lent his voice to characters in animated movies including Despicable Me and Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!

LICENSING

DHX Media and its subsidiary Wildbrain Entertainment have entered into a deal with Immediate Media for a magazine in the UK based on the preschool stop-frame animated series Rastamouse. Under the agreement, Immediate Media will publish a monthly standalone Rastamouse title beginning this June 2012. Designed to underline and encourage respect and understanding, the magazine will feature stories, reward charts, stickers and various role play activities, as well as incentives to “make a bad ‘ting good,” and hone their detective skills while helping Rastamouse solve a mystery. The new Rastamouse magazine follows a ‘Rastamouse special’ issue of CBeebies Magazine published in February 2012. A Rastamouse Company Production for CBeebies, Rastamouse is produced by Greg Boardman and Eugenio Perez of Three Stones Media, in association with Wales’s Dinamo Productions, London-based Little Roots and DHX Media, which handles worldwide TV sales (excluding the UK) and worldwide licensing and merchandising.

Pretty Ugly, the licensors of the Uglydoll brand, enters into a range of Uglydoll licensing partnership for in a variety of categories including: Callaway Digital Arts (mobile apps based on the Uglyverse); Amscan (party supplies, ceramic ware, balloons); FAB*Starpoint (backpacks, messenger bags, handbags, totes, cosmetic bags, wallets, coin purses, zipper pulls, lunch bags, and luggage); Accessory Innovations (fashion headwear, cold weather accessories, hosiery, and umbrellas); Thermos (Funtainer products, lunch accessories, lunch kits); Zak Designs (kid’s dinnerware, flatware, and drinkware); Freeze (branded apparel for all ages); Komar (kid’s sleepwear); Richard Leeds International (sleepwear for juniors and women); United Legwear (socks and bodywear for various age groups); Toy Factory (branded products for the amusement park market); Thumbtack Press (line of art prints).

Big Tent Entertainment complete two new fashion licensing deals for Domo for the US and Canada. Signing on are Modify Watches, which will launch a new line of watches featuring Domo designs with interchangeable silicone straps in multiple colors. Also joining the Domo licensing program is H2W to create a new collection of Domo costume jewelry. The line, which features products for both men and women, includes necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings made of metal and plastic. The company expects to begin distributing the jewelry in May across specialty stores, mid-tier department retailers and online. H2W plans to debut the line at specialty stores and mid-tier department retailers and online beginning this May 2012.

Dr. Fresh, an oral care company, inks a new licensing deal to serve as the exclusive US manufacture and marketer of Angry Birds oral care products. The first product to release under the agreement will be the kid-aimed FireFly Angry Birds Squirt ‘N Brush Tooth foam in Q3 2012. The FireFly Angry Birds Squirt ‘N Brush Tooth Foam is a unique toothpaste product. Instead of being squeezed onto the brush, the user squirts it directly into their mouth.

Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific expands Cartoon Network HD channel to Indonesia this week on the national cable platform First Media. The launch of Cartoon Network HD is part of a South East Asian regional rollout plan that kicked off in the Philippines on SKYcable in January 2012. Cartoon Network HD’s programming line-up features a range of series, including The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time, Chowder, the Ben 10 franchise, as well as classic shows including the Tom & Jerry Show, Pink Panther & Pals and Scooby-Doo.

Insight Strategy Group promotes Mia Scelsi to Associate Director/Operations and Andi Click to Sr. Project Manager, as well as naming Jillian Rodriguez to the newly created position of Creative Writer. Scelsi, who joined Insight in 2007, was most recently Manager of Operations. In her new position, Scelsi will continue to work closely with COO Catherine Ganley to help manage Insight’s finances, human resources and operations. She previously toiled for Macklowe Properties and Expressway Music and Events. Glick designs, moderates, and analyzes studies for Insight Kids. Glick has been with the company since 2010 and has held several positions with the company, the most recent being Manager. As Creative Writer, Rodriguez will be responsible for all copywriting for the company, including proposals, the Muse of the Month and Insight’s blog. Rodriguez joins Insight from ArtTable.org where she was Membership & Communications Manager. She previously held positions at El Museo del Barrio, mcgarrybowen and Mercury Magazine.
