Cynopsis: Kids!
04.23.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 23, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Today’s Top Headlines
We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Sprout is making several new additions to its lineup and expanding its digital strategy, including a new music microsite, the addition of 150 online games and expansion of its app line. The network is bringing back The Chica Show for a second season, LazyTown for a third season, and just debuted Fremantle/CBeebies’ animated nature series Tree Fu Tom. Its new Laurie Berkner-starring series Sing It Laurie! debuted in March.

New Sprout programming slated to debut in 2014 includes:
 – Ruff-Ruff, Tweet & Dave, is a preschool game show where kids (and their parents) can play along on a smart phone or tablet using audio watermarking technology.  Ruff-Ruff, Tweet & Dave is a co-production with Collingwood O’Hare (The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!) in association with Sparky Animation and Bejuba! Entertainment.

– Boj (Pesky) features a free-spirited 5-year-old-bilby (Australian marsupial) who embodies fun, adventure and resourcefulness when he pops up in his new digs, Giggly Park.

– Driftwood Bay (Sixteen South), a mixed-media animated series about an island that exists in the imagination of a little girl who creates a world from different treasures she finds washed up on the beach. The show encourages preschoolers to make their own fun and adventures from the things they find. Driftwood Bay is distributed by Henson Independent Properties.

TIME OUT WITH… DANE BOEDIGHEIMER

Hey Pear, hey Pear… We’ve got some news. Cartoon Network just reupped multiplatform hit Annoying Orange for a second season-the premiere is Thursday, May 16-and CynKids spoke with the creator of the Internet-to-TV sensation, Dane Boedigheimer, about the genesis of the show, emerging distribution models and life at 1 billion views and counting. Here’s Dane in his own words on…

he genesis of Annoying Orange
The idea came from my love of creating scenarios where you take something inanimate and bring it to life and see what its reaction would be to living in the world it lives in. Foods in particular have it hard… at any point in time, they are in imminent danger of being eaten or disposed of. That’s what spawned the idea, and luckily I left a character alive at the end of the carnage to keep the series going!

What it’s like to have your creation turned into a hit TV property
It’s totally surreal. It blows my mind to wake up and go to work and get to hang out with people I admire and respect so much… and that they actually want to come on the show and be silly with us. It’s not all a cup of tea though. I play four of the main characters (Orange, Pear, Marshmallow, and Midget Apple), so when I’m not doing hours of voiceover, we’re shooting live action assets, approving episodes every step of the way, all the while helping out with marketing, merch, social media, animating on the web side, and really just trying to keep everything in the brand running smoothly. But I can’t complain one bit… not when I get to hang out with Dave Grohl and Olivia Wilde.

Which fruit he has the most in common with
Pear. He’s kind of the lovable straight guy and really spends most of his time trying to manage Orange and keep him out of trouble. Of course things always go wrong and he’s constantly scrambling around trying to fix things. I can relate to that on a lot of levels. He also loves explosions… and so do I.

His dream voice guest for the show
Nathan Fillion and the entire cast of Firefly. Can anyone say, Firefly-themed reunion episode?

Whether we still need our flat screens
In my opinion, there will always be some sort of iteration of TV. Getting done with work and sitting down in front of a TV, watching sports with friends, or enjoying a movie on your big flatscreen… these are all things that can’t be replaced with a small laptop or mobile device. I feel the same way about watching movies in a theater. That’s an experience that can’t be completely replaced. Now how that content you watch is delivered to your TV will inevitably change. We’re seeing it already. I’d love to be able to tell you how it’s all going to merge, but that’s the big question. So yes, I think we’ll always need TV, but we won’t always need the current ways that content is delivered to us.

Coolest piece of Annoying Orange merch he’s seen
The Annoying Orange video game “Kitchen Carnage”, the gummies, and Annoying Orange Halloween costumes. I would love to see an Annoying Orange hot air balloon. And yes. I’m being serious.

Time Out With… is a regular Cynopsis Kids! Q&A with a children’s entertainment thought leader. Part Two of our conversation with Dane Boedigheimer will run in tomorrow’s issue.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

PBS Kids has ordered up a third season of 9 Story Entertainment and the Kratt Brothers Company’s Wild Kratts. The series stars zoologist brothers Chris and Martin Kratt as animated versions of themselves who introduce kids to new worlds of animals and wildlife. TVO, in Canada, also picked up a third season of the series.

Nickelodeon will debut animated series Sanjay and Craig on Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. The show follows the antics of a 12-year-old boy and his best buddy, who happens to be a talking snake, as they embark on “totally ridiculous, absolutely gross, and weirdly sweet” adventures.

LICENSING

Hungry for more Care Bears? American Greetings’ AG Properties is launching a promotion with Burger King restaurants to offer Care Bears Kids Meals this spring in key markets in the U.S., Canada and select countries in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Middle East. The promo is tied to the popular Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot series that airs on The Hub.

MORE KIDS NEWS

The year of the cat? Toymaker Hasbro said an online poll asking fans to help pick the replacement for its iron playing piece the utilitarian piece has been replaced by a proud feline–helped lift sales of the game. The company beat analyst predictions for the first quarter, but still saw its losses widen to $6.7 million, compared with $2.6 million loss a year earlier. Hasbro’s revenues were up 2% to $664 million, bolstered by its games, girls and preschool divisions. The boys division is still on a downward spiral, with revenue falling 20% from Q1 2012. Hasbro’s brands include Transformers, My Little Pony, GI Joe, Furby and One Direction toys. It will continue a cost-cutting program, including a 10% slash in its workforce, in an effort to maintain profitability. Competitor Mattel also beat analyst projections when it announced its Q1 results last week.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT

There are lots of campaigns these days aimed at getting kids off the junk food and off the couch–and though it’s slightly ironic, children’s TV networks are some of the very best ambassadors around. In June Teletoon throws its hat into the ring with Healthy Me Week, a campaign led by Concerned Children’s Advertisers to motivate and inspiring kids and families to take care of their health. The net will air the special Scooby-Doo! Spooky Games on June 8, plus on-screen interstitials and messaging with healthy living tips for kids.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Congrats to Marci Cooperstein, who’s been upped to VP, programming and development, at ABC Family. Cooperstein will focus on identification and development of new original series in both the drama and comedy genres. Most recently executive director, programming and development, ABC Family, Cooperstein developed original drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Baby Daddy, among other series.

Indie kids entertainment producer DHX Media appoints Thom Chapman to the post of territory manager, responsible for sales to English-speaking Canada and the Asia Pacific territories. Chapman, who previously was VP, business development and sales, at ToonBox Entertainment, will focus on the expansion of DHX Media’s properties across all platforms in these key territories.
