Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 9, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Common Sense Media ( www.commonsense.org ), nonprofit that provides families with information about media and technology, launches its new multiplatform public awareness campaign Power to the Parent. Designed to educate parents about the impact that media has on kids’ live and the importance of parents (and parenting) in this picture, the campaign is supported by a $40 million TV ad campaign, online manner ads, a microsite, and a social media component. The goal of Power to the Parent is to get parents to be involved in kids’ lives and how they are using media to help them make educated and safe choices when using various media. The campaign includes three parent-targeted TV spots, tilted Role Models, Stadium, and Time Spent, which are already airing and will continue to run over the next year. Comcast, Cox Communications, DirecTV, NBC Universal, and Time Warner Cable are supporting the TV campaign. Online the initiative is supported by Common sense Media’s partners Yahoo!, Facebook, GreatSchools, and Hulu, all of which will offer a connection to the campaign microsite via banner ads, links, and other content.
DHX Media rebrands its production, distribution, and licensing and interactive divisions under the same label to bolster its identity. Moving forward the subsidiaries Decode Entertainment, Halifax Film, Studio B Productions, Decode Enterprises, DXH Licensing and DHX Interactive will fall under single banner DHX Media.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Canadian-based Nelvana Studio and family-targeted network YTV (Canada) are teaming with Michael Poryes (co-creator/executive producer Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven) for the new live-action series Life with Boys (26×30). Casting is underway for the new series, which is slated to debut on YTV in September 2011, with pre-sales already completed with Canal J (France), Nickelodeon UK and ABC (Australia). A comedy, Life with Boys revolves around 13-year-old Tess as she tries to make it through teendom while living with her single and overprotective dad and three brothers. Nelvana Enterprises is distributing Life with Boys in Canada, Latin America and Asia, with Helion Pictures will handle distribution in Australia, France and the UK, and Classic Media managing distribution across all media and the remaining territories worldwide. Nelvana Studio and YTV are both owned by Corus Entertainment.
BBC North names its first group of content commissions under its @North digital initiative, using just over $414,000, or more than half the total amount $768,000 that has been earmarked for this overall effort. Launched a year ago to support development of interactive content for CBBC and CBeebies, the first companies to receive commissions are from Yorkshire, the Northeast and North-West of England, Numiko and Brass from Leeds, The Workshop from Sheffield, Amaze from Manchester and Th_nk from Newcastle. Further commissions are will be announced in the next several months.
Joel McHale (Community, The Soup) is almost signed to star in Robert Rodriguez‘s new movie Spy Kids 4: All The Time in the World 3D, per Variety. Set for release on August 19, 2011, the Dimension film is a reboot of the Spy Kids movies, which will star McHale and Jessica Alba as a married couple, he a spy-hunting reporter and she a retired spy and stepmom to his kids.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Girl Meet World with Selena Gomez, a new three-part short-form series will debut tomorrow, Friday, September 10, between 8p-9:30p on Disney Channel. Filmed in Europe, the series provides viewers with a look at Gomez’s (Wizards of Waverly Place) life as she performs in concert and records her second album, A Year Without Rain. Hollywood Records will release her new album on Tuesday, September 21.
A new group of 26 episodes of Cookie Jar Entertainment‘s animated preschool series Caillou will debut on Treehouse (Canada) beginning Saturday, September 11 at 2:30p (the series regular timeslot). New episodes will also air Saturdays at 7:30p and Sundays at 2:30p. Additionally, the series airs Mondays-Fridays at various times. The TV series is based on the Caillou book series published by Chouette Publishing.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for Miffy and Friends, inks a deal with Keenway Industries to produce a line of Miffy branded preschool toys. Set to launch this fall, the Miffy branded preschool-targeted toys include tea sets, medical and doctor kits, and figurines among other toys. Created by Dutch author/illustrator Dick Bruna, Miffy is celebrating her 55th anniversary. Netherlands-based Mercis owns the copyright to Miffy and Friends and also serves as the brand’s worldwide licensor.
Penelope will be featured in magazines as 4Kids Entertainment International completes a deal with publisher Redan to include the preschool character in two bi-weekly magazines, Fun to Learn Friends and Fun to Learn Favourites, in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Penelope, a 3-year-old blue panda character, is based on the books created by author Anne Gutman and illustrator Georg Hallensleben, initially published by licensor Gallimard Jeunesse in France. This is the first license deal that 4Kids has inked for Penelope. 4Kids represents the property around the world, excluding Asia and France. Nippon Animation has produced a Penelope TV series (52 episodes) and two Christmas specials that are currently available. The series has been acquired by France 5 (France), CBeebies (UK), ABC (Australia) and channels across EMEA.
Fresh TV and Cake Entertainment enter into a deal with Joy Tashjian Marketing Group (JTMG) to handle licensing and merchandising in the US and Canada for the animated Total Drama series. Under the deal JTMG will be the exclusive licensing agent for Total Drama Island (26×30) and Total Drama Action (26×30), which already air on Cartoon Network (US) and Teletoon (Canada). The upcoming new series Total Drama Reloaded will debut in 2011. Total Drama is created/produced by Fresh TV, with Cake Entertainment handling the worldwide distribution and merchandising for the series.
