Good Morning, it’s Thursday, September 6, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Apple unveiled its new line of iPods yesterday including a model with an iPhone-like touchscreen interface and Zune-like WiFi access. The iPod touch sports a 3.5-inch widescreen and a Safari browser, creating a mobile YouTube delivery device that essentially replicates the iPhone browsing experience for non-AT&T subscribers. It’s going to run $299 for an 8 GB model and $399 for a 16 GB version, scheduled to ship later this month. Apple is teaming with Starbucks to allow customers to browse a new WiFi iTunes store for free inside of its coffee shops. Go near a Starbucks and an icon pops up. Click on it and you can buy Starbucks’ current music selections. The former video Ipod has renamed the iPod Classic with a slimmer design and a bigger hard drive. Steve Jobs also announced he was phasing out the entry level iPhone and cutting the price of the upper-end model from $599 to $399, just over two months after the much-hyped smart phone was released.
HBO acquired Molotov’s Dispatches in Search of the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey for a pretty penny, a 35-minute “machinima” film created within the Second Life virtual world. (The network paid a handsome six figures for the digitally rendered yarn, according to reports.) Molotov Alta is the protagonist of the story, the SL avatar of noted multimedia director Douglas Gayeton (whose credits include the interactive CD-ROM Johnny Memonic for Sony Imagesoft.) HBO plans to release the film in L.A. so that it will quality for an Academy Award later this year and plans to premiere it on the network next year. Here’s a website that lays out the premise.
Tyler Perry, in partnership with IPTV technology provider Narrowstep and talent agency William Morris, launched his own broadband video channel TylerPerry.com. The site serves as a showcase and point-of-purchase outlet for the artist’s feature films and stage plays. It will also stream exclusive episodes of Tyler’s upcoming talk show The Tyler Perry Show.
NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams is calling on iVillage.com and msnbc.com to create digital components for The Secret to Her Success, a new weeklong series on women’s issues beginning September 10. iVillage.com will feature one-on-one interviews with each of NBC News’ correspondence to kick off a dialogue with users. Msnbc.com will offer original stories, expert advice, video clips and news.
New York-based PBS affiliate WLIW and Thirteen/WNET launched NewYorkWarStories.org, an online destination of first-hand print and video recollections of World War II. The site features educational outreach initiatives including a multimedia project collaboration with Reel Works Teen Filmmaking – a group of Brooklyn high school students.
mtvU and Cisco unveiled five new college student-developed digital applications from the 2007 Digital Incubator program, an annual grant competition that awards students up to $250,000 in funding to develop new digital content, games and applications.

- Launchosiris.com is an MP3 visualizer that uses song lyrics to dynamically generate images
- Casablancathegame.com is an online/mobile party game with elements of social networking, espionage and alternative-reality gaming
- Selectricity.org is a new ranking system that generates winners based on choices that are acceptable to the group as a whole
- HowDoISayThis.com is an interactive wiki where users help create video advice messages
Asterpix.com launched a new “hypervideo” service, enabling users to embed hyperlinks within online video streams. The technology allows specific objects or characters within the frame to be clicked on, offering the user additional information or a menu of interactive options. Asterpix was founded in October 2006 and has raised $4 million in venture capital from New Enterprise Associates.
Artist-focused social networking site OurStage came out of beta yesterday, rolling out a new feature to connect top-ranked independent music and film artists with industry veterans. The Artist Access program includes contests, mentoring sessions and festival placements provided by a variety of partners.
Microsoft officially launched Silverlight, the new digital media format the company introduced to developers earlier this year it hopes will rival industry-dominant Adobe Flash. Learning from its mistakes with PC-partial Windows Media, Microsoft’s 1.0 Silverlight release supports Firefox and Internet Explorer on the PC as well as Firefox and Safari on the Mac, right out of the box. Entertainment Tonight, HSN and World Wrestling Entertainment are working with Microsoft on a program designed to foster collaboration among solution providers, content delivery networks, tools vendors and design agencies.
The Universal Music Group carried out its threat to sue online video site Veoh for copyright violations, filing a complaint yesterday in Los Angeles federal court. Veoh tried to head Universal off at the pass by filing its own complaint in San Diego last month to “reinforce its rights” under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
The NFL changed its controversial restriction which prohibited broadcast networks from posting more than 45 seconds of online video shot of team personnel at team facilities, reports Sports Business Journal. Fox, CBS, ESPN and NBC argued their billion-dollar licensing fees should buy them more online access than non-rights holders.
Crisp Wireless extended its partnership with Gannett Co. to power mobile websites for more than 30 of its local TV and newspaper properties. Crisp also has mobile partnerships with Internet Broadcasting, Cars.com, Fandango, Tribune Interactive and Washington Post.
Bravo inked partnerships with Macy’s, Maybelline New York and Garnier as multiplatform sponsors of Bravo’s new eight-episode, one-hour series Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. Macy’s will serve as retail partner. Maybelline New York and Garnier are official sponsors for the series’ WAP site (wap.bravotv.com), featuring videos and photo diaries of the transformed participants, polls, interviews, quizzes and a special microsite promoting new products.
Contextual video advertising company Digitalsmiths Corp. has come to market with its own targeted video ad solution dubbed VideoSense. The technology applies a proprietary video search algorithm combining image interpretation with speech recognition to help advertisers drill down more meaningfully into online video content. The company says it has optimized the technology for multiple content platforms including traditional broadcast, broadband and mobile.
About 27% of adults visited a local TV website during the past 30 days, according to a new study from The Media Audit. The largest percentage of adults who visited station sites reside in the Raleigh-Durham DMA (60.3% of online adults), followed by Tulsa, Denver, Columbia SC and Little Rock AK.

Beth Comstock, President, NBC Universal Integrated Media, is preparing to leave the network and return to General Electric as Chief Marketing Officer, reported The New York Post. The piece also quotes sources that say NBC is close to announcing a deal to acquire Oxygen to bolster its iVillage.com property.
Discovery Communications hired former AOL SVP Joshua Freeman as EVP/Digital Media, reporting to Bruce Campbell, President of Digital Media & Business Development. Joshua will be charged with seeking out new technology and strategic alliances and developing new business models and markets across digital platforms.
National Geographic Digital Media has named John Caldwell VP/Strategic Development & Operations. He will be responsible for developing the strategic direction and financial operations for all units within NGDM, reporting to the unit’s President Betsy Scolnik.
Richard Bennington has joined Publicis Groupe interactive ad agency Digitas as General Manager. Richard will manage day-to-day financial operations of the Chicago office, reporting to Global COO Jim Rossman. He joins from Ignition Advertising, where he served as President/CEO.
AaronKaro.com is the online home of writer Aaron Karo’s email column “Ruminations,” which turned 10 this year. The missives began as a fratboy-targeted email sent out to 20 college friends when he was a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. His friends began forwarding his emails around, so Karo continued writing. (Wait a minute, this sounds like a familiar history!) Ten years later, he still emails out his Ruminations and now has over 50,000 subscribers around the world. Simon & Schuster has published compilations of the column as two books.
