George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise is going to feel the force of 3D technology with a Fox theatrical re-release of all 6 feature films beginning in 2012 with a re-release of Episode 1, “The Phantom Menace,” according to reports. By that time, the number of 3D screens available in the U.S. could double from the current 2,300 or so, with several more thousand being added overseas. John Knoll, visual effects supervisor of Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic is overseeing the conversion. James Cameron’s Avatar, which reportedly inspired Lucas to repackage Star Wars as a 3D experience, didn’t fare so well on its second time in theaters. It netted just $4 million in its opening weekend (or less than $500k per extra minute of footage added.)
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
UK broadcaster ITV has decided to forgo licensing its shows to Hulu in favor of focusing on building up its own online destination, ITV.com, according to public comments made by ITV CEO Adam Crozier. The network’s plans could include charging for premium content using a micropayments system.
 
Movie studios such as Disney and Warner Bros. are kicking around the idea of awarding premium VOD customers (those who pay $25-$30 to see a new release movie at home) with a voucher they can redeem for a DVD of the movie as a way to cut disc retailers and home video divisions into the action, per THR.
 
Universal Networks International has launched a new web video digital platform that will power interactive websites across 16 countries for its five core channel brands online: Syfy Universal, Diva Universal, Studio Universal, Universal Channel and 13th Street Universal. The sites will offer episodes of key programming featured on the channel, behind-the-scenes footage, social games and exclusive web series.
 
Allstate is sponsoring a new weekly short form web series, “Behind the Mic,” on SI.com featuring insights from legendary pro athletes who have made the jump to the broadcast booth. The series, produced with Turner Sports, kicks off Oct. 1 with 7 90-second segments.
 
Yahoo and The Washington Post are also collaborating on a new politics-themed daily series dubbed “ The Fast Fix,” featuring commentary by WaPo‘s Chris Cillizza.
 
24/7 anime network FUNimation has signed a carriage agreement with AT&T U-Verse, landing a spot on U-verse’s premium HD tier.

In preparation for a planned IPO, Hulu is shopping expensive ad sponsorship packages for the upcoming launch of subscription service Hulu Plus, reports the NYPost. The joint venture has already signed a handful of launch sponsors who have committed $2 million each.
 
Multiplatform advertising technology provider BlackArrow announced that its Advanced Advertising System has been selected by Rainbow Media Holdings for a multiphase dynamic VOD advertising trial, currently underway with several Rainbow networks including AMC, IFC and Sundance Channel. The system enables advanced campaign management features including creative rotation of inventory, real-time ad campaign selection based on content targeting and impression-based reporting.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
AOL made yet another acquisition this week, acquiring social software start-up Thing Labs, creator of the Brizzly social media reader that allows you to carry on conversations with friends across Twitter and Facebook enhanced with photos and videos. AOL plans to integrate elements of Brizzly into its AIM and social aggregation Lifestream service and will put Thing Labs’ Jason Shellen and Christopher Wetherell in charge of this product line.
 
Business software solutions provider Marketron has acquired mSnap, the largest broadcast-based mobile ad network and provider of mobile ad solutions. The acquisition will enable Marketron to add mobile advertising for its radio, television and other media clients.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Video analytics firm Tubemogul has revisited the issue regarding what should count as a video view with a new report analyzing the counting policies of several popular online video sites. The “view” issue, a bugaboo for an industry that is desperate to convince advertisers that its analytics can be trusted, was first looked at by the company in 2008 and two years later, accuracy seems to have gone from bad to worse; tests run from 9/12/10 and 9/17/10 on a single computer across 8 top sites found that a full “view” was counted as a video start almost universally, (including off-site autoplays with the sound turned down – YouTube was the only site to disavow these.) blip.tv and Vimeo were found to be the most stringent overall, limiting views to one IP address per session and one embed per session.

As much buzz as streaming media products receive (guilty as charged,) a relatively narrow segment of the population actually uses these devices, according to a new report from The NPD Group. In fact, 75% of consumers aged 13 or older did not use a connected devices such as a computer, Blu-ray players or Roku set-top box to download content in the past 3 months. Of the 25% who did, 15% connected via a PC or Mac computer; 6% via a video-game player; 4% via smartphone; and 2% via a Blu-ray Disc (BD) player or a digital video player. However, The NPD Group remains convinced that the demand for digital content will continue to rise as more affordable, easy-to-use connected devices hit the marketplace. One reason is that a range of applications, from hardcore games to productivity apps, are helping to convert a wider sample of users.
 
Tivo announced that it is increasing the sample size for its Power||Watch DVR ratings service from 25k to 100k households.

Santa’s coming late this year for handheld gaming fans – the release of the much anticipated Nintendo 3DS handled videogame device has been pushed back to Feb. 26 in Japan and some time in March, 2011 for the U.S. and Europe.
 
Following its new partnerships with social game developers, 3D virtual world/social networking site IMVU has now launched its first Mac version as well as its first mobile app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The free IMVU 2Go app allows registered members to text, chat, send and receive messages, accept friend requests and group invites and upload pictures to their personal IMVU gallery.

Social networking, mobile, voice and video services are all coming together a determined rate of speed – heck, even Apple is being forced to allow Google’s disruptive voice apps back on the iPhone for fear of being ostracized. This trend could lead to one of the most powerful partnerships since Harry Reese tied up with Milton Hershey. Facebook is close to announcing a wide-ranging agreement with IP-based communications platform Skype that will include integration of SMS, voice chat and the all powerful Facebook Connect system, reports Kara Swisher in the WSJ’s BoomTown blog. Folks who log in with their Skype account using Facebook will be able to chat with their Facebook friends and visa versa. Facebook has been experimenting with more advanced communications tools such as live streaming and video chat but a Skype integration would bring best of class services to a social network that is quickly defining how the people of the world connect with one another. Also, both services can only gain followers in such a scenario, as both have over 550 million registered users who can’t all overlap. Rumors of branded Facebook phone continued to be bandied about but this deal, if it turns out to be real, is much bigger.
