Good Morning, it’s Thursday, September 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Hollywood scribes are closer than ever to striking over compensation for online distribution of their work, according to a feature in the LA Times, as writers and producers continue to try and hammer out a new contract. Much of the work being done for the web, including original shorts and online extensions of primetime shows, is coming from non-union digital studios, and writers fear abuses from such a “farm system.” Complicating matters is the issue of whether online video should be considered promotional or not. If it is, networks argue, then writers shouldn’t expect residuals from it. For more on the drama of Contract 2007, check out the WGA and The AMPTP‘s websites.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Comcast agreed to add TBS to its HD line-up, just in time for the first round of the MLB playoffs, which will be carried on the Turner network as part of a new seven-year deal. In more baseball news, MLB.com launched a slew of new mobile features providing fans with text alerts, gameday audio, video clips and a newly revamped mobile site.
 
Two freshman series from NBC – Chuck and Journeyman – popped up on the iTunes store, despite NBC’s refusal to renew its deal with Apple site. (NBC continues to fight for more pricing flexibility and piracy controls). It turns out the shows, though branded as NBC titles, are produced by outside studios. Chuck is a Warner Bros. co-production, and Journeyman is produced by 20th Century Fox TV.
 
Microsoft is reporting that sales for Halo 3 generated $170 million during the first 20 hours of its release, topping the $125 million sales record set by Halo 2. More than 1 million players have logged on the play the networked Xbox Live version. The game is expected to give a huge boost to the Xbox 3 console and platform.
 
Anheuser-Busch has agreed to continue funding the much-maligned Bud.tv at least through 2008, vowing to improve traffic, add more interactivity and sign more content deals.
 
Moviefone relaunched its celebrity – on – celebrity unscripted series, adding embeddable video, improved navigation and user interaction functions. Verizon Wireless has signed on as exclusive sponsor.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Blip.tv signed a deal to host and distribute the popular videoblog Rocketboom. Blip.tv will offer post roll ads and collapsible overlays with the video in both Flash and Quicktime formats, believed to be a first in the online video space.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
AOL founder Steve Case’s Revolution LLC launched a new online-based payment system to rival eBay’s PayPal. Revolution Money promises to offer online money transfers and a credit card with significantly reduced exchange fees, lowering per transaction merchant costs from the standard 1.9% to .05%. AOL will also joint the venture to enable payments via instant messenger.
 
RealNetworks is acquiring New York-based casual gaming site Gametrust, according to paidcontent.org. Gametrust features games, contests and community features.
 
Time Warner Cable is launching a fantasy football fan-focused “My Football Tracker” function in nine cities, displaying customizable fantasy stats and news on screen. The application is powered by BIAP.
 
Hearst-Argyle signed retransmission consent agreements for digital, analog, HD and multicast carriage of its TV stations in six Cox cable markets: WESH and WKCF, Orlando; KMBC, Kansas City, Missouri; KOCO, Oklahoma City; WDSU, New Orleans; KETV, Omaha; and KHBS/KHOG, Fort Smith/Fayetteville, Arkansas.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Dreaded pre-roll videos are finally being deemphasized. MSN Video officially launched a new version of its player that serves ads based on how long the user has been on the site instead of how many videos they have viewed. MSN Video also improved its search functionality, added new community features and integrated Soapbox user generated videos with the entire MSN catalog.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Nielsen
said it would triple the size of its national people meter TV panel by 2011, the year it pledged to roll out local people meters to an additional 38 markets. The sample would increase from 12,000 households to 37,000 households or 100,000 viewers.
 
Consumers are shelling out more money on media and entertainment thanks to upgrades in technologies, according to a new SNL Kagan study, to the tune of 1.85% of the average U.S. annual income. Things are good all over, it would seem. TV broadcasters are benefiting from political ad dollars and retrans agreements; cable operators will see VOD grow from $1 billion to $5.5 billion by 2017; and wireless carriers saw subscriptions grow by 12% last year and will reach 233 million subscribers by year-end.

NBC Universal
is reorganizing its international digital staff to maximize future growth, splitting the effort into two camps: New Media Licensing and Digital Assets.

  • Kevin Obi will head up the Digital Assets team as SVP, to be based in London. He will lead strategy and development of branded digital assets internationally, reporting directly to Roma Khanna, President, NBC Universal Global Networks and Digital Initiatives and on a “dotted line” basis to NBCU Chief Digital Officer George Kliavkoff.
  • Beth Minehart was promoted to EVP and head of International New Media Licensing. She will lead a regionally focused sales team concentrating on licensing all forms of new media through new and traditional platforms, reporting to Belinda Menendez and Craig Kornblau from Los Angeles.
