Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/15/11
Good morning, it’s Thursday, September 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo! are going to start working together to sell ad inventory on each other’s sites, which is a move that AllThingsD believes, signals an effort to compete with Google. Essentially, the companies have agreed to sell each other’s “Class 2 display” inventory, or graphic ads they can’t sell on their own and would have to pass it on to ad networks. The three companies will share ad revenue, and in theory, will pocket more money than if they had a third-party ad network sell their inventory. During a media briefing in New York this past week, the group announced they hope to convince high-profile web properties to also redirect some of their ad inventory and to persuade big ad holding companies to share some of their purchases through this new venture. The plan will be put into motion by the end of the year.
USA Network has expanded its “Character Chatter” Social TV messaging platform to integrate with Facebook. The service allows fans of USA’s shows to connect with each other, chat with friends who love the same shows in real-time and also watch a live feed to interact with actors and writers throughout the season. The enhanced service went live in conjunction with the airing of the season finale of Necessary Roughness, during which series star Callie Thorne hosted a live video chat with fans.
By the end of 2012, American Airlines will expand its in-flight streaming video service to almost 400 Wi-Fi enabled airplanes. Passengers can purchase TV episodes for $0.99 each and movies for $3.99 each. Furthermore, in-flight Wi-Fi doesn’t have to be purchased and the movies and TV shows will be accessible on the device that was used to rent them for 24 hours and 72 hours, respectively.
This week in Google, the company unveiled “ Flight Search” in an effort to become the best at providing flight and travel information. Right now, the service is not offering Google’s full plans for the service, but this beta version shows flight search results for select cities and round-trip domestic flights. You can filter results by time, price, duration, route and airline. Check out its video on YouTube.
Prescreen , a new startup that launched yesterday, gives indie filmmakers and distributors an alternative to traditional advertising and distribution channels. Users subscribe to a daily e-mail alert that highlights one indie film a day. The user can then visit Prescreen to preview trailers for free to rent streamed movies for 60 days. [Via TechCrunch]
OneRiot, a startup that targets mobile ads based on social data, has been bought by Wal-Mart. It will become a part of @WalmartLabs in Silicon Valley and will be a key part of the company’s “Social Genome” project which serves to target products to consumers.
Yesterday, Paraview Entertainment announced its launch in conjunction with a signed distribution deal with Verizon’s FIOS video-on-demand platform. The company seeks to be a destination for authentic content serving the “Cultural Creative” market. Programming will include topics such as physics, parapsychology, the environment and other interests relevant to Cultural Creatives.
Twitter has officially begun inserting ads from brand marketers that you might not follow into your tweet stream. The first advertisers to jump in to the new platform are media companies such as Disney, LionsGate, AMC Theaters and Yahoo!, according to ClickZ.
CBS chooses SMS calls to action, instead of QR codes, within its print advertisements to draw in viewers. “Everyone has phones that support SMS,” says Philippe Browning, vice president of advertising and operations at CBS Mobile, New York. “QR codes have an added barrier with a download … it doesn’t have the same value of a text.” Print ads, promoting new series on CBS’ fall lineup, will have a “call to action” that encourages viewers to text a keyword to a short code in order to access video clips of the show they are interested in. Tubifi, Inc. has launched a new service for online video creation, distribution and analytics for companies seeking to minimize costs, time commitment and need for in-house talent. The company offers an online video platform that can host videos, upload them to video-sharing sites and social networks and even attach videos to third party content. The platform is complemented by a creative offering that includes a CLIO-winning ad exec, a network of skilled videographers, and access to an extensive library of video footage through existing partnerships with video content providers.
Exponential Interactive, Inc., the owners of global online advertising provider Tribal Fusion and video engagement solution Firefly Video, has acquired AdoTube to increase its online video advertising offering. The company will operate AdoTube as an independent unit.
Organic storage company Scality has signed a deal with German social networking site wer-kennt-wen.de to provide cost-effective storage of photos, messages and even profile information, via its RING Organic Storage platform, for the social site’s 9.4 million users.
According to an eMarketer estimate, Google’s Android is set to overtake the iPhone as the number one smartphone in the U.S. by the end of the year. Android will run on 37% of all smartphone devices, an increase of 13% from 2010. Apple’s share will rise as well, but only from 28% to 29%. Actually, Android’s growth has the most detrimental impact on BlackBerry, which eMarketer predicts will drop from 30% market share in 2010 to just 15% by 2013.
Seven out of ten mobile users regularly check status updates on their device, according to data from Prosper Mobile Insights. Other interesting data reveals that 64% of users still prefer the PC for accessing the web, compared to 29% who prefer smartphones and 8% who prefer a tablet.
Registration has opened for CEA‘s Mobile App Showdown that will take place at the 2012 International CES on January 12, 2012. Judges will select ten finalists for the Showdown. Two winners will be crowned via a live vote at the consumer technology tradeshow and a separate vote on the App Showdown website.
MediaBrix, the social media advertising platform that offers multi-touch ad technology, has hired Todd Bowman as its new Chief Revenue Officer, Magali Merat as Executive Director of West Coast Sales and Melissa Beck as Executive Director of East Coast Sales. While Mr. Bowman and Ms. Merat will work from the west coast in MediaBrix’s Los Angeles and San Francisco offices, respectively, Ms. Beck will operate out of New York.
Broadcast industry veteran Scott Libin will be the new Vice President of Content Solutions at Internet Broadcasting, a provider of digital publishing solutions whose clients include media companies like Hearst Television and McGraw-Hill Broadcasting. Libin will oversee IB’s multi-million dollar set of managed services and products.
