Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.03.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 3, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Yesterday, The Sundance Channel launched an original web series to accompany its new TV show, Dream School. The series takes 15 teenage dropouts and has them instructed they’re taught by the likes of director Oliver Stone, financial maven Suze Orman and journalist Soledad O’Brien. Premiering on Oct. 7, Dream School web series can be seen on Sundancechannel.com, its Facebook page and Twitter.
Seattle rapper Macklemore and producer Buffalo David Bitton released the first of five episodes in a new web series documenting the artist’s recent world tour. The show will go behind-the-scenes and on-stage during the European stint of the tour. The series can be viewed at macklemore.com.
Ford and POPSUGAR partnered for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month to create video series In Her World. It will include four parts, and feature actress Kat Dennings and Olympic gold medalist Carmelita Jeter, among other notables. The first episode is available on PopSugar.com and Ford Warrior’s in Pink Facebook and YouTube pages this month.
PGA Tour and USA Today will expand its collaboration in 2014 to present content on both brands’ digital platforms, including stats, news and PGA Tour video.
Machinima’s Mortal Kombat web series has returned for season two after a two-year break from the wildly successful first season, which saw 70 million views. All ten MK eps were released at once, and the first episode has brought in 2.4 million views so far. The others are clocking in at 500,000 and can be viewed on Machinima’s YouTube channel.
In other words: This is awfully good news, since the company just laid off ten percent of its staff.
British graffiti artist Banksy is joining the social media phenomenon by advertising his month-long New York City show Better Out Than In through Instagram and Twitter. A documentary will be produced about the exhibit, and social media users can discuss the art with the tag #banksyny or call a toll-free audio guide to “enhance” the latest artwork.
In other words: The artist is known for his mystery in fact, his actual identity has never been confirmed – so this PR move is rather unusual, to say the least.
Networks (both Cable & Broadcast) are faced with eroding ratings and ad dollars shifting from TV to Digital. That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing and what they need to do more of to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Join us as our experts share the latest business and advertising models for success at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit!
The latest from Microsoft is that investors want Bill Gates to resign, on the grounds that he may prevent the next CEO from developing new strategies in order for the company to stay afloat, says Reuters.
Google added Hulu Plus to its Chromecast yesterday. The $35 dongle can still stream free Hulu programming by using its web browser, and carries other Google apps and Netflix to stream content already.
In other words: Google is actually downplaying this addition to the device, according to All Things D, and is instead promoting its own apps as the best way to stream video.
