The FTC closed the book on its probe of Google’s Street View mapping and data collection program. A letter from Commission director of Consumer Protection David Vladeck expresses satisfaction with Google”s explanation that it had no idea it was collecting and storing personal information and did nothing with it. Consumer groups such as Consumer Watchdog, which has been careful to point out the increasing amount of political donations Google has been making, called foul, saying that the country is entitled to a full probe into such abuses.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
James Cameron has officially signed on to write and direct the next two 3D Avatar extravaganza’s for 20th Century Fox, both of which will be set on the fictional planet of Pandora. He will begin work on the scripts for both sequels in early 2011, with release dates tentatively scheduled for Dec. 2014 and Dec. 2015. Avatar, aided by its extra 3D surcharges, is by far the top-grossing film of all time netting over $2.8 bn worldwide.
 
Showtime announced it will soon roll out its own TV Everywhere portal, Showtime Anytime, featuring full episodes of movies, specials and original shows such as Dexter, Weeds, The Tudors and United States of Tara from current and past seasons. The content will also be made available to individual operator sites and is now viewable on Comcast’s Xfinity.TV site.
 
Univision is expanding its partnership with the NFL to include a new Spanish-language NFL site and increased multiplatform coverage of events leading up to Super Bowl XLV in Dallas.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
A group of veteran TV producers, Sara Edwards, Susan Levit and Lyn May who know each other from stints in the Boston market, have founded a blog called Wise Women Now to spur conversations about aging among women. The tone is positive and inclusive with topics including fashion, health, travel and career reinventions.
 
The NFL’s Miami Dolphins signed a deal with Thwapr to provide mobile video services to the team. The two have created a content schedule featuring daily mobile videos from the team covering press conferences, player interviews and, yes, cheerleader workouts through the end of the season.

Kantar Video
unveiled a new comprehensive video analytics platform in beta format to aid in video syndication, featuring next generation tracking, sorting and measurement tools. Analytics including demographic, psychographic and attitudinal data as well as linkages to proprietary Kantar online access panels will enable audience profiling. Kantar says its proprietary fingerprinting technology tracks video content across sites and platforms, even if it is taken offline, modified and reposted.
 
Live video streaming platform Kyte has added Live video streaming for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, supporting HTML5-formatted video ads served by third party platforms including Doubleclick’s DART.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
The ongoing trend of squeezing more money from fewer subscribers in cable continues as Comcast reported the loss of 275k basic subs but a better-than-expected 7.3% increase in Q3 revenue to $9.5 billion. (The company blamed a weak economy rather than “cord cutting” for the subscriber losses.) Comcast attributed the gains to more internet and voice customers and higher television averages; the Ave. Revenue per Subscriber (ARPU in cable jargon) rose to $130/mo., up from $107 in 2008.
 
Cablevision
made a last ditch effort to reach a retransmission agreement with Fox before the World Series began last night, but saw “no movement” by Fox from the offer.
 
CableLabs, MovieLabs, Comcast and Rovi announced the creation of the Entertainment Identifier Registry (EIDR) to track the distribution of movies, TV shows and other assets, similar to the way books are coded. The registry is set up as an industry resource to help streamline digital commerce and simplify consumer transactions. Supporting players include Sony, Disney, Warner Bros. and the MPAA.
 
Apple launched its first e-commerce site in China, found at apple.com.cn.
 
The FTC also ruled that TV manufacturers must now display EnergyGuide labels on televisions that estimate the products’ yearly energy cost (as seen on hot water heaters, washing machines, etc.)
 
Yahoo launched a redesign of it web email site promising faster performance, integrated social networking, photo slideshows and video playback directly from your inbox.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Pre-roll ads may not be the best way to reach online video viewers, according to a new analysis from TubeMougul. The numbers, if fact, are downright discouraging. Some 86.9% of unique visitors to a site’s homepage will never watch a pre-roll video ad, according a two-week sampling of broadcast, magazine and newspaper sites. Perhaps because their medium is video, broadcaster sites fared the best with 20.41% of visitors viewing the full ad, followed by 14.91% for magazine sites and only 10.53% for newspaper sites. The ad network/analytics service said it quantified visits by limiting the sample to sites with video players embedded somewhere on their homepage.
               

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
The NHL has expanded its mobile product portfolio with partner NeuLion to include a complete lineup of mobile NHL GameCenter apps for a wider range of smartphones, tablets and carriers. Hardcore fans will be able to stream full-length games live on the 10” screen iPad by the end of 2010:

  • The free NHL Gamecenter app, featuring real-time scores, stats and graphics is available for Google Android, BlackBerry, iPhone/iTouch, iPad and Nokia handsets
  • The paid NHL GameCenter premium app ($19.95) adds video highlights, condensed games and live audio
  • The new NHL Gamecenter Live app ($79.99) just launched for BlackBerry and Android on Verizon, featuring live streams of NHL games and is due out of the iPad later this year

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Fox Interactive’s MySpace, once the big kid on the block in social networking, received a major facelift geared toward the Gen Y users (the 13-35 crowd) that borrows tools and features from rivals such as Facebook, Twitter and foursquare. The new site is organized around youth-oriented multiplatform content covering music, movies, TV, games and celeb culture; each time a user logs on, algorithms will surmise their interest to populate their start-up page with content targeted to their tastes. One of the cooler features is a customizable user interface: you can choose between a traditional List view, a magazine-style grid view or a video-centric Play view that enables you to easily create your own videos and send them to your friends. MySpace partners such as MTV, Village Voice, Access Hollywood and Tribune’s LA Times will provide news and blog content while Content Hubs will be built by studios, sports franchises and bands as destination profiles. MySpace hopes engagement will improve with new features such as trending topics, discovery tabs that reveal what your friends are watching and foursquare-style badges that reward fans for their loyalty. It’s probably too late in the game for MySpace to reclaim its elite status, but trying to carve out a niche around social entertainment makes sense given its parent company’s core business.
