Cynopsis: DIGITAL

10/18/07

Good Morning, it’s Thursday, October 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

A show known for utilizing HD to get the most out of its gross-out effects is now turning to 3D web imagery to satisfy its fans. CSI creator Anthony Zuiker has signed on to create a multimedia crime lab in virtual world Second Life that will intersect with a storyline on the linear CSI: New York, to be introduced in the Oct. 24 episode. Users can join Gary Sinise’s avatar chasing the killer into Second Life or visit a virtual crime lab, created by digital content creator Electric Sheep, to recreate experiments from the show and help solve the murder. Mr. Zuiker will also host an interactive blog that will allow users to postulate about what happened to a dead body, personally ranking the responses.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Knocked Up writer/director and Superbad producer Judge Aptow joined Will Ferrell and Adam McKay as principle partners of FunnyOrDie.com, the video sharing site that brought us The Landlord, viewed more than 47 million times online. Look for more outtakes from Aptow’s movies on the site as well as exclusive content shot with all three comedians.

The aforementioned The Landlord is one of the nominees for Funniest Web Video (aka LOL Award) in the inaugural TV Guide Online Video Awards, one of 18 categories represented. The list tends to favor network creations (NBC leads with 11 noms, followed by CBS, ABC and FunnyOrDie.com with 7 each.) Online votes will determine the winners, to be announced at a Dec. 1 event at the Baker Hanger in Santa Monica, CA. TV Guide plans to televise the event a few days later.

IAC‘s user generated video site Vimeo will begin offering videos this week in the 1280 x 720 HD format as a way to attract filmmakers concerned with image quality. The site has about 250,000 registered users and attracts 900,000 unique visitors a month.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Apple became the latest to technology giant to adopt open standards, announcing it would allow third-party applications to be developed for the iPhone. In an open letter posted to Apple.com, CEO Steve Jobs wrote that a software development kit should be ready by early next year. The move is quite a reversal for Apple, which has been extremely protective of its operating systems over the years, a policy that has helped protect Macs against viruses, malware and software conflicts.

eBay‘s revenues spiked 30% to $1.89 billion during the third quarter and net income, the Skype writedown not withstanding, increased by 53% to $564 million. CEO Meg Whitman admitted the company had focused too much on trying to monetize Skype while under-investing in the technology itself.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Contextual online advertising exchange ContextWeb has opened its ADSDAQ ad exchange to all site publishers. The exchange allows websites to name the CPM they would ask for their inventory, opening up opportunities for even the smallest of online publishers. Until today, the ADSDAQ exchange had only been open to a select group including A&E’s History.com, Biography.com and AETV.com.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Kurt Andersen, founder of Spy Magazine, and Michael Jackson, President, IAC Programming have co-founded a new website and “it” daily e-newsletter called VeryShortList.com, providing information on the latest under-hyped gems. VSL uncovers and recommends one excellent, but under-hyped, entertainment tidbit before the rest of the world has taken (much) notice. Among other things it provides some cultural perspective to new trends, like recommending Ingmar Bergman’s TV miniseries Scenes From A Marriage to fans of HBO’s Tell Me You Love Me.
