Good Morning, it’s Thursday, October 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

The open platform concept is really catching on. MySpace is planning to launch the MySpace Platform in the coming weeks, according to the blog TechCrunch, which heard the news from a number of third party developers the social network has reached out to. Like Facebook, MySpace would like freelance developers to create cool new applications to enhance MySpace users’ experience. Developers would be able to serve their own ads within their own applications and keep 100% of the proceeds generated from them. Not be left out, Google is also planning to entice third party app writers to create for iGoogle, Orkut and eventually Google Apps. The marketplace is realizing that open source environments incubate creativity and ultimately drive usage. More than 5,000 third-party applications have been developed for Facebook so far this year.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Atlas Media Corp. formed the Atlas Digital & Emerging Media group to develop and produce original content for mobile and online platforms. Atlas Digital will launch with 4 new content deals: Intriguing rituals, bizarre festivals and related content will be featured on the Stounder channel on YouTube from October 15; Comcast’s FEARnet will premiere new Atlas webisodes during each day of October, including Route 666 and America’s Scariest Home Haunts; Fuse is producing three pilot webisodes to be tested online and Discovery Mobile will distribute an original Atlas pilot. Maria Lane, EVP, Atlas Digital & Emerging Media, will head the venture.

New content providers including CondeNet, Sports Illustrated and blip.tv will add a total of eight new internet channels to Sony Electronics‘ Bravia Internet Video Link service. Sony will also begin offering “Minisodes” (TV episode condensed into 5-6 minutes) and a Funny Bone channel on the service, comprised of sitcoms, shorts and cancelled pilots from the past. Logos that link to the content appear on Bravia TV menu screens, accessible with a click of the remote.  New partners join Yahoo!, AOL and Crackle, operating on the service since it launched in August.

Cartoon Network is teaming with LucasArts to produce a 3D Halloween programming block on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. ET accompanied by a sneak peak of the upcoming LucasArts 3D game Thrillville: Off the Rails. CartoonNetwork.com is also hosting 3D house parties and creating a custom microsite featuring a demo of the game.

CBS Interactive unveiled a new horror-themed interactive series in the form of mock-training films teaching users “How To Survive A Horror Movie: All the Skills to Dodge the Kills”. Based on book of the same title by Seth Grahame-Smith, the two-minute webisodes will be available on dodgethekills.com and through the CBS Audience Network from now through October 25.

PBS multiplatform preschool network Sprout is also getting into the spooky spirit of things during Halloween week with holiday-themed episodes of its shows. SproutOnline.com is featuring a special Halloween section including video highlights of children making homemade costumes and crafts as well as various themed games, activities and contests.
Airborne Entertainment launched the NHL Clubhouse mobile storefront on Verizon Wireless, offering team-branded mobile content, ringtones and wallpapers.

George Harrison became the final Beatle to make his solo albums available digitally on iTunes, Amazon.com, and the Zune Marketplace. The world is still waiting for the Beatles catalog to become available after Paul McCartney was quoted saying a deal was imminent in May.

Online video search engine Blinkx launched a new revenue-sharing ad platform that will split ad revenue earned from contextually placed ads with website publishers that embed the Blinkx player on their site. The Blinkx system, based on speech-to-text transcription and visual recognition, will dynamically select relevant ads then pay publishers based on each time the ad is clicked on. Content creators are not compensated in the Blinkx model.
 
Mediacasting platform provider and tool creator CastFire signed three new deals to provide infrastructure, management and ad insertion services to Next New Networks, Boing Boing TV and DECA. CastFire provides tools to help podcasters manage, analyze and enhance their offerings.
 
MtvU’s RateMyProfessors.com launched a new Facebook widget allowing college students to search for and view RateMyProfessors’ ratings right from their Facebook profiles.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

The heads of the parent companies of the big 4 broadcasters wrote a letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin voicing concern that allowing wireless devices to share TV broadcast spectrum would interfere with over-the-air digital TV broadcasting. That didn’t stop AT&T from deciding to pay $2.5 billion for additional wireless spectrum in the 700 Mhz range, allowing it to offer customers additional wireless services including video broadcasting. The purchase from Aloha Partners will add enough capacity to serve video and text messaging to the top 72 U.S. markets.
 
Sprint
may soon be forced to give up on launching WiMax networks in major cities according to CNET, as shareholders view it too risky a venture for a company already on shaky footing. Sprint announced a partnership earlier this year with Craig McCaw-led start-up Clearwire to help hasten its plans.

Travel Ad Network (TAN) announced it will become the exclusive sales representative for RandMcNally.com, the fourth-largest mapping and driving directions site according to comScore. TAN’s network consists of over 50 sites including Kayak.com, LonelyPlanet.com and Rough Guides.
 
Intel
will spend a minimum of 35% of its multi-million dollar “Intel Inside” cooperative advertising campaign online, according to The New York Times.

Fox Mobile Entertainment President and CEO of Jamba Lucy Hood announced her resignation from News Corp. to pursue “more entrepreneurial ventures.” Jamba COO Lee Fenton will assume her duties until a replacement can be found. Jamba is the vertically integrated mobile content joint venture formed in 2006 between News Corp. and VeriSign, Inc.
 
AOL named Tariq Muhammad as Director of AOL Black Voices. He will oversee editorial activity for all areas of the site, reporting to Mike Rich, SVP, AOL Entertainment and AOL Black Voices.
 
Michael Lamontagne joined Cincinnati-based Empower MediaMarketing as Digital Strategist/Search. Michael comes over from Nielsen Online (formerly Nielsen BuzzMetrics), where he was a senior research analyst.
