Cynopsis: DIGITAL
11/03/11
Good morning, it’s Thursday, November 3, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here .
Viacom and Time Warner Cable (TWC) will be going at it again in the courtroom as the media company seeks to block the cable operator from streaming its content on the iPad. According to MediaPost, TWC argues that it has the right to simulcast Viacom TV networks because it recognized new distribution methods were on the horizon and therefore obtained platform-neutral rights. Viacom counters that iPad in-home streaming is a breach of contract and violates copyrights and trademarks, and demands adequate compensation for giving TWC the rights to stream its channels to mobile devices. The companies had put their dispute on hold in June 2011 in order to figure out a new agreement. However, that ended when Cablevision ended a similar dispute it had with Viacom. TWC demands that it is entitled to the same terms as Cablevision. Gauging from court documents, Viacom is seeking additional compensation partly because of potentially lost advertising dollars as Nielsen does not yet measure streamed programming.
Its separate deals with Netflix and Hulu will help Time Warner generate $100 million in revenue in the last quarter of 2011, which is a testament to the profitable nature of web video for large media companies, says AllThingsD. While this is good news for media companies as the ongoing slide towards digital content continues, the fact remains that content is still more valuable when distributed through traditional outlets. It is why media companies have made it a focus to condition viewers to not expect to see video content on web services immediately.
Time Out New York is partnering up with Foursquare to declare those who have done the most things, and/or checked-in to the most places, on Time Out NY‘s Best of NYC tip list the “Kings of New York” via a real-time social leaderboard. Users can check in to see how they rank against others in the city. The Kings, or the top three individuals on the scoreboard each week, will get a shout-out in the magazine’s print edition.
Independent producer/distributor Entertainment Studios (ES) has launched SmartTV.com, a new subscription TV platform that will allow subscribers to watch live television and VOD on multiple devices including TVs, computers, mobile devices and set-top boxes. The offering premieres with six of the company’s networks bringing you channels with content dedicated to topics such as cars, comedy, entertainment news, pets, recipes and travel. ES has plans to offer at least one linear programming channel for all major entertainment categories within the next 12 months. Subscriptions start for as low as $1.99 per month.
Square’s Card Case iOS app lets you pay for your item by simply saying your own name; eliminating the need for taking out your wallet or even your phone, reports GigaOm. The app’s technology uses GPS in order to connect to a business when you’re within 100 meters of the location. The sale is charged to the card you have set up with Square. The business has its own Square app, which will allow cashiers to verify that it is indeed you making the purchase. Once the transaction is complete, you’ll even get a push notification with the amount. The service is opt-in and intended for customers who frequent a specific business. As of now, 20,000 merchants accept the Square service. The Android version will come soon.
Asana, a web-based productivity app co-founded by Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz, has finally been made available to the public. The app forgoes the social networking actions and tools you are used to (such as chats and status updates) to focus more on your work items, reports TechCrunch. It allows you to plan, schedule and notify co-workers on the projects you’re working on; see who is working on a project and relevant attachments for it; assign tasks; and thanks to HTML5, it runs pretty fast as well. For now, the service is free for up to groups of 30 people.
LG Electronics is integrating YuMe‘s ad technology into their connected TVs in order to provide app developers the ability to monetize their apps. YuMe will power LG’s ad solution including in-app ad support, management and optimization of the publisher’s ad inventory. Toyota has signed up to be the first advertiser for the connected TV ad offering. This announcement also means that YuMe’s solution for connected TVs and CE manufacturers is available.
According to a forecast from eMarketer, social network ad revenue will exceed $8 billion in 2012 and approach $10 billion in 2013. In fact, spending will reach $3.9 billion in 2012 and $4.81 billion in 2013. For comparison’s sake, 2011 is scheduled to amass $2.74 billion in social network advertising spend. The biggest benefactor of the continuing rise in social ad spend? Facebook; it will collect $5.78 billion, or 72% of all social networking advertising revenues in 2012.
A+E Networks‘ Project Runway scored the highest ranking for all TV in the category of “social media activity” for the last week of October 2011, according to Trendrr.TV. The show amasses over 935,000 pieces of activities across multiple social channels (such as Facebook, Twitter, GetGlue and Miso) to beat out other popular TV fare such as The Jersey Shore, The X Factor and The Walking Dead.
Google has unveiled a new native Gmail app for the iOS operating system. The app allows you to receive push notifications for new emails, search across all your mail, scan your emails that are on the same subject with threaded conversations, label your mail and upload photos with one click via a new attachment button. The app also enables you to keep track of important messages with the Priority Inbox. For what it’s worth, initial reviews have been less than favorable citing numerous bugs from an inability to sign in to a broken push notification feature, along with other crash errors.
Previous Cynopsis: Digital Website of the Day, IntoNow , is coming to the iPad. For those who don’t remember, the app tells you what TV show you are watching by simply tapping one button and letting it record the audio, and then allows you to share the viewing info with friends. The iPad version enhances the service by populating relevant information (from tweets to news stories and, if applicable, sports game statistics) into your in-app newsfeed based on the TV show you tag.
Improv Electronic‘s Boogie Board Rip LCD writing tablet is now available for shipment through purchases made on Brookstone.com, Amazon.com and the company’s own website. The tablet comes with optional Virtual Desktop Companion software (compatible with Windows) that enables users to connect the device to a PC in order to view notes and drawings, save files to the computer and share them via e-mail. The device is priced at $129.99.
PlayScience, a digital media strategy company focused on helping organizations develop play and entertainment products, has mad two additions to its senior staff. Riwanon Gestin will come on as the Global Research Lead and Ross Marks will become the Innovation & Research Lead. Gestin will take charge of the company’s global research efforts and expanding the company’s presence worldwide, while Marks will oversee the development of new methods and strategies for consumer insights and product development.
David Cautin has been named the new Chief Executive Officer at kgb, the independent provider of directory assistance and information services. Cautin will oversee the strategy and operation of kgb business worldwide, with the exception of kgbdeals, which has its own CEO in Brian Harrison. Cautin will be based out of New York City and will report to the company chairman, Robert Pines.
