Facebook suffered one of the largest security breaches in the social network’s history this week when hackers unleashed a widespread attack that caused violent and pornographic images to be posted on some users’ profiles. According to the company, hackers somehow tricked users into copying and pasting malicious code onto their browsers, and thus unwittingly gave the attackers access to their profiles allowing them to post and do whatever they wished with it. The social giant announced yesterday that it had identified the parties responsible for the attack, regained control of much of the spam and is working towards preventing such an attack from happening again.

Cox Communications will begin streaming TV channels to tablets by late December 2011. Called Cox TV Connect, Cox President Patrick Esser did not disclose which tablets will be supported initially when the service rolls out. He did mention that Cox has been working on the service for nine months and cited the introduction of the iPad as giving cable “a kick in the pants.” Subscribers will initially get a chance to watch 35 channels via the app, according a report from Multichannel.
Audio Network
has announced separate deals with NBC (a new partner) and HBO (a three-year renewal) to provide both networks unlimited access to the company’s library of music. The deal extension with HBO will see the pay-TV channel continue to use Audio Network for all content produced in the U.S., Latin America, Central Europe and Asia. The new deal with NBC brings Audio’s library to more than 10 stations across NBC affiliates in major U.S. cities. Housing over 45,000 tracks, Audio Network makes it easier for networks to use musical content for their programs across multiple platforms without needing to deal with complex licensing deals.
In conjunction with the start of The Presidents’ Cup this week, has been integrated into NBC Sports’ online offering. The site will serve as the full golf news and editorial section for and; and will replace the golf section on NBC Sports’ website and across all of its mobile platforms.
RedLever Studios is partnering up with Emmy-winning producer Jonathan Prince to create a live-action and animated web series, called Supermoms, presented by The Clorox Company. Currently in post-production, the series will feature eight webisodes focused on four suburban moms who also happen to be superheroes. A devoted Facebook page featuring behind-the-scenes content that will also serve as the series’ main hub will go live in January 2012.

Youtoo Social TV is a multiplatform service that wants to put anyone on broadcast TV for free. Through, or its iOS and Android apps, you can record a 15-second video and then upload it onto the service. Once uploaded, the video is reviewed, transcoded and placed in an uplink facility. If deemed acceptable to air, the video will then be broadcast on Youtoo TV, which is currently available in 15 million cable households. The entire process is automated, which means a video you record one minute has the possibility of being on TV just a few minutes later. While it is currently in beta, Youtoo states that it would like to get 150,000 users on the air in its first year.


Advertising in VOD programming offers specific advantages for brand marketers to effectively engage consumers, according to the Phase II study of the Advanced Advertising Media Project (AAMP), which is an industry-wide effort to measure the impact of ads within free VOD. The study reveals four themes when it comes to VOD advertising:

  • Ads within a VOD context have the same statistical impact, regardless of the size of the ad load.
  • Because consumers consider VOD to be television, they accept ads as they would when watching TV.
  • On-Demand content has a positive effect on consumers’ sense of control over advertising.
  • VOD offers the opportunity for increased ad durations, and thus the chance for greater storytelling and information sharing for advertisers.

Microsoft Advertising has inked a deal with mobile ad tech company Mojiva to integrate its mobile ad serving platform into Microsoft’s suite of ad technologies. Mojiva’s Mocean platform will power display ads on Microsoft’s network of mobile apps and websites, including MSN for Mobile. In addition, Mojiva’s mobile ad network will be integrated into the Microsoft Ad Exchange for Mobile to generate more advertiser demand, according a blog post from Microsoft announcing the deal.



FourthWall Media has announced that BendBroadband will be the first cable operator to deploy its EBIF platform for Motorola set-top boxes, and will launch the platform integrated with Rovi i-Guide. Service providers can license this integrated solution through Rovi. FourthWall is also an EBIF platform supplier for Cisco set-top boxes.


CTAM’s research on the social networking habits of 13-34 year olds when watching TV finds that, while about half of 18-24 and 25-34 year olds follow or “like” TV networks or shows, only 38% of 13-17 year olds do the same. Furthermore, while the leading social activities when watching TV were looking up info (31% of 13-34 year olds), discussing shows online (29%), posting updates or tweeting (24%) and visiting the network or show’s page (22%), 18-24 and 25-34 year olds were almost twice as likely to perform such activities than the 13-17 age group. Other relevant findings from the study include:

  • 77% reported that friends and family are most influential in helping decide what to watch, followed by previews (61%), browsing (56%) and ads (48%).
  • 70% are watching the same amount of live TV as they did a year ago. In fact, 81% prefer live TV when watching sports, as well as 71% who prefer it when watching new episodes.
  • Mobile viewers are also “entertainment enthusiasts” and early adopters and make up 20% of the 13-17 age group, 34% of 18-24 demographic and 46% of the 25-34 group.

comScore has released its monthly analysis of U.S. web activity based on data from its own Video Metrix service for October 2011. In terms of the top 50 online destinations, Google Sites ranked highest as it received over 186 million unique visitors in October. It was followed by Yahoo Sites, Microsoft Sites, Facebook and AOL in that order. As for notable movers and shakers, WebMD Health and The Washington Post made the biggest gains as each jumped five spots to #39 and #44, respectively. Alloy Digital Network (#37) and Liberty Media Holding Corporation (#38) were the newcomers on the list.
According to a forecast from eMarketer, Hispanic mobile users are nearly 17% more likely than whites to use the mobile web, even though whites account for a two-thirds share of U.S. mobile phone and mobile internet users. The estimation that minorities access mobile internet more than whites extends to the Asian and black demographic as well, and will continue to outpace whites through 2015.



The Weather Channel has unveiled a new app to be made available for the Kindle Fire. The free app offers users weather-triggered images; Weather Channel Social, an integration with Twitter that allows users to see real-time tweets about their specific local weather; WeatherReady, preparation tips for any upcoming severe weather; as well as more data for regular weather reports and updates. It will be one of the featured apps when users go to the apps tab on their Kindle Fire.
SPIRIT DSP, a provider of voice and video over IP services, has made the TeamSpirit Voice & Video Engine Tablet available for the iPad and Android tablet devices. The platform enables service providers, app developers or manufacturers the opportunity to launch HD multipoint videoconferencing services on tablets. It is the latest addition to the TeamSpirit Conferencing Platform, which allows end users to run voice and video conferencing over multiple platforms.


John Shea has joined NBCUniversal’s Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media Division in the newly-created post of EVP & CMO of Integrated Media. Reporting to Lauren Zalaznick, the chairman of the division, Shea will collaborate on all cross-company Integrated Media marketing efforts and oversee some of the company’s content, research and sales marketing initiatives, including Women at NBCU, Hispanics at NBCU, Green Is Universal and Healthy at NBCU. Furthermore, Shea will also head the company’s in-house creative agency, sales and marketing team and the newly-formed Integrated Media research team. Being a veteran show developer and producer, Shea also has a first look development deal across NBCUniversal as part of his agreement to join the company.
