According to Cisco‘s Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast 2011-2016, global internet traffic is going to quadruple by 2016 (to 1.3 zettabytes, which is the equivalent of 1 trillion gigabytes). Cisco says this significant growth will be driven by a number of factors, including the following:
- The rise in smart devices, as well as machine-to-machine connections is driving up the demand for connectivity, says Cisco. By 2016, it expects that there will be nearly 18.9 billion network connections (almost 2.5 for every person on Earth), compared to 10.3 billion in 2011. Interestingly, by 2016 TVs are projected to account for over 6% of global consumer web traffic, and 18% of internet video traffic.
- Cisco expects there to be 3.4 billion internet users by 2016, which would be roughly 45% of the world’s population, based on UN estimates.
- The average fixed broadband speed will also quadruple, from 9 Mbps in 2011 to 34 Mbps in 2016.
- By 2016, 1.2 million video minutes (or, as Cisco notes, the equivalent of 833 days), will “travel the internet every second.” Furthermore, Cisco expects there to be 1.5 billion internet video users by 2016, up from 792 million in 2011.
- Over half of the world’s internet traffic is projected to come from Wi-Fi connections by 2016.
IGN Entertainment has announced it will be providing live streaming coverage of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) across multiple platforms, including on IGN.com, on YouTube, on its mobile apps (iOS and Android), and through Xbox LIVE. Beginning this coming Monday, June 4, and running right through the week, IGN programming from E3 will include live coverage of press conferences as well as IGN’s Live Show from its booth on the show floor. The Live Show will feature demos of highly anticipated games and interviews with their developers. IGN has partnered with Microsoft to offer a free month of Xbox LIVE Gold membership so fans can access IGN’s app on the console for no charge. IGN is also bringing its IGN Pro League to E3 as it will stream competitive tournaments for the upcoming fighting game Dead or Alive 5.
Here comes another update to Google‘s social network: The company is rolling out Google+ Local, a new service designed to help users discover and share local information. Available as a new tab on Google+, the service features Zagat scores and recommendations from friends and contacts on the social network, and is integrated into Google Search, Maps, and mobile (via Google Maps on Android; will be coming soon to iOS devices).
An interesting note from Apple CEO Tim Cook’s interview with AllThingsD‘s Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg at the website’s D10 conference: When he was asked if an iOS integration with Facebook (much like the one the operating system currently has with Twitter) was forthcoming, Cook responded, “I think we can do more with them. Just stay tuned on this one.” (Apple’s WWDC 2012 begins on June 11.) On Apple’s oft-discussed role in the TV business: Cook did not reveal any future plans, but mentioned that Apple sold 2.7 million Apple TV devices in the last six months; the company sold 2.8 million in total in 2011.
Kayak Software Corp., which runs the popular travel deals website, has decided to delay the timing of its initial public offering, reports The Wall Street Journal. The decision is due to Facebook’s controversial and less than stellar public stock offering. The original plan called for the Facebook IPO’s lead bank, Morgan Stanley, to underwrite Kayak’s IPO, and for the roadshow to begin “after Memorial Day,” according to the paper’s sources. For what it’s worth, Kayak told the WSJ that its IPO hasn’t been delayed, primarily because the start-up never set an official timeframe for it.
AllThingsD is reporting that Salesforce.com is about to acquire Buddy Media in a deal that will value Buddy Media at more than $800 million. Sources tell the WSJ-owned website that Buddy Media picked Salesforce over a competing offer from Google. Buddy Media offers a suite of products that help brands manage their presence on social media sites, especially on Facebook, for which it is also a “preferred developer consultant.”
Netflix has agreed to not retain any information on the viewing habits of its consumers. This is according to US District Court papers filed recently in relation to a lawsuit in which the plaintiffs accused the company of violating the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA). Netflix said earlier this year that it had settled the lawsuit for $9 million. These court papers, which are being filed in order for the judge to approve the settlement, reveal that the company has agreed to remove all of its consumers’ viewing data at most a year after they cancel their accounts.

Long-form videos (longer than 10 minutes in length) accounted for over half the content consumed in Q1 2012, according to online video management and analytics company Ooyala. This the first time long-form content has surpassed short-form content across its “global video footprint,” and means that people are spending more time than ever watching full-length TV shows, feature films, and sporting events, according to the company. Other interesting data from the report includes:
- Overall share of time watched on smartphones increased by 41% in Q1 2012; overall share of time watched on tablets grew by 32%.
- On an average weekday, a third of tablet video viewing occurs between 7pm and 11pm; in comparison, only 17% of PC video viewing takes place during the same time period.
- Viewers on connected TVs watch nearly a third more video between 4pm and 11pm on Saturdays than on a typical weekday evening.
- 10% of a publisher’s audience watches more than five of its videos on any given day.
- Following the release of the latest iPad in March, the amount of video watched on tablets rose 26%; iPads currently account for 95% of tablet video viewing.
43% of smartphone owners in March 2012 conducted a search on their mobile device in response to a TV ad, according to data from Google, conducted by Ipsos MediaCT and TNS Infratest, per an eMarketer report. In addition, 40% of smartphone owners in the same month searched in response to seeing ads in stores. The top places where the study’s respondents researched products via their smartphones were the home (58%), on the go (43%), and inside a store (31%).
Yahoo News’ and ABC News’ politics-focused video series Power Players has become the eighth most-watched original video series online, reaching 4.3 million unique visitors in April 2012, according to a custom report from comScore. The comScore Media Builder Custom Report focused on data surrounding 75+ original video programs, as defined by Yahoo, from the likes of Yahoo, AOL, Forbes, Funny or Die, Hulu, IGN, MSN, SheKnows, YouTube, VEVO, and more. The report indicates that the top 13 online video series belonged to Yahoo when based on unique viewers. Power Players is a daily series featuring ABC News and Yahoo News correspondents, and is one of five original shows the two organizations have launched since announcing their news partnership in October 2011. The five series in total have been streamed more than 66 million times, based on Yahoo’s own internal data gathering.
The Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader iOS app from One Three Media and Ludia Inc. allows users to compete with up to six other contestants on sets of eight questions that are pooled from different areas of grade school curriculum, including art, world geography, US history, and math. Each question is worth a certain dollar amount, which is later multiplied by the number of competitors who chose the wrong answer. Other features of the game, based on the popular TV show, include daily high score rankings, built-in social features to challenge friends and contacts on social networks, and the ability to cheat if a particular question is too difficult. The free iPad version shot up to the top spot on iTunes within one week of its release.
Todd Whiting has been named SVP/NBCUniversal Cable & New Media Distribution. At his new position, Whiting will continue to work with Frances Manfredi, President/NBCUniversal Cable & New Media Distribution, in digital content licensing for NBCU’s network and cable TV series and Universal Film to subscription on-demand clients, such as Netflix and Amazon. The expanded role also calls for him to continue to license both TV and film content to fully distributed and emerging cable networks. Prior to this promotion, Whiting was VP of the same division.
Comcast Spotlight has named three regional VPs of its Comcast Media 360 business unit. Tim Russell joins the company as Eastern Regional VP, while Jon Sayer has been appointed to Central Regional VP and Davina Kent to Western Regional VP. Collectively, they are responsible for ad sales across Comcast’s assets, including TV, interactive TV, online, VOD, tablet, and mobile platforms. Comcast Spotlight says they will also work with analytic partners to provide measurement of campaign effectiveness and efficiency based on advertiser-specific ROI metrics.
NY-based branding and marketing communications agency The Halo Group has announced that Jeff Peters is joining the firm as Social Media Specialist. In his new role, Peters will be responsible for managing clients’ reputations on the social web, as well as fostering “relationships with consumers through ongoing digital dialog.” Peters brings prior experience in the development and execution of social media campaigns for clients such as Cisco, Viacom, CMT, and CBS Sports. Halo’s expansion of its social media department includes the addition of Whitney McGowan as Social Media Networker. She will work with Peters in the creation of social media programs for clients.
