Facebook has announced its plans to launch an App Center of its own. The company says users will have access to the App Center in the coming weeks via the web, as well as through the iOS and Android Facebook apps. “All canvas, mobile, and web apps that follow the guidelines can be listed,” wrote Aaron Brady, a Software Engineer at Facebook. Similar to app stores from the likes of Apple and Google, every app in the new Facebook App Center will have its own detail page, providing relevant information before a user chooses to install it. The social network is also unveiling a new app ratings metric in Facebook Insights to report how users are rating the app. “Well-designed apps that people enjoy will be prominently displayed. Apps that receive poor user ratings or don’t meet the quality guidelines won’t be listed,” writes Brady. Facebook will use “a variety of signals,” such as user ratings and engagement, to determine if an app will be listed. Also focusing on mobile apps that use Facebook, users will be able to browse apps that are compatible with their iOS or Android device, and if a mobile app requires installation, users will be redirected to the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. The App Center will also support paid apps.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Fishbowl Worldwide Media has partnered with actress/singer Ashley Tisdale’s Blondie Girl Productions to develop Meet Cute, an online hidden camera dating show, where friends set up unsuspecting friends on “blind meets.” The series is part of a larger digital strategy from Tisdale’s production company, as Blondie Girl Productions has inked separate deals with Dolphin Digital Media and comedy troupe Dr. God to develop a scripted online series (In Bloom) and a sketch comedy/reality series (Pitchslap), respectively.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Adaptly, which provides a platform to buy social media ads across multiple social networks (including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, StumbleUpon, and more), has raised $10.5 million in Series B financing, led by Valhalla Partners, with participation from additional new investors such as Time Warner Investments and Vivi Nevo. Alongside the investment, Adaptly also announced Evergreen; a new solution that takes the content that brands post on social networks and converts it into paid media ads, with the aim being to expand the brand’s reach to more users. Evergreen is now available on Facebook; Kraft Foods has already signed on to use it.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Digital ad company Exponential Interactive has launched Appsnack, a new mobile ad division that offers in-app, rich media solutions for brand advertisers. Focusing on HTML5-based rich media advertising, the interactive ads from Appsnack enable users to engage with video content, product info, and other types of content such as locations of nearby retail stores. Appsnack will use Exponential’s e-X Advertising Intelligence platform to target and deliver relevant content to those audiences. Sandy Shanman has been appointed as GM/Mobile to lead this new division.

Here are some highlights from AOL’s Q1 2012 earnings report as it pertains to digital advertising: AOL’s global advertising revenue grew 5% year-over-year, however there was a 1% decline in domestic display revenue (AOL attributed the drop to “a decline in reserved impressions sold, partially offset by growth in reserved inventory pricing and Patch revenue,”); it grew combined AOL Properties Display and Third Party Network revenue by 10% year-over-year; and Third Party Network revenue itself increased 23%, the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. And of note, AOL says that its videos, video views, video ad impressions, and video revenue experienced double-digit growth rates.

In-image ad platform GumGum will offer in-image advertising across Montreal-based Oboxmedia’s 40+ websites that span the entertainment, lifestyle, sports, music, and automotive verticals. It’s the first instance of GumGum expanding its advertising services outside the U.S. Oboxmedia’s network of websites reaches over 8 million Canadians aged 18-44. GumGum’s in-image ad platform places contextual ads on portion of publisher photographs. It says its proprietary image recognition and targeting technology behind the ad placements can yield 20x the CTR of traditional online ads. In the U.S., GumGum has worked with the likes of Time Warner, Hearst, TMZ, Gannett, and Glam Media.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

AOL is looking for buyers to purchase Engadget and TechCrunch, reports PandoDaily. The two tech websites might be sold together in a package labeled AOL Tech, which would include smaller offerings such as TUAW and Joystiq. AOL is reportedly seeking $70 million to $100 million for the package.

Samsung has announced that it is acquiring mSpot, a mobile cloud-based content service provider from California. Samsung says the acquisition “will provide a cloud-based entertainment experience of music, video, and radio services for users of Samsung devices.” The acquisition will include the transfer of mSpot technology, assets, and employees to Samsung. More details of the deal have not been disclosed yet.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Social activity surrounding broadcast primetime TV in April 2012 increased by 194% over April 2011, according to the latest research from Trendrr.TV. In terms of monthly data, of the top five broadcast networks, FOX had the highest increase in broadcast social share, up 10% in April 2012 from March 2012. Overall, broadcast was more socially active per telecast than cable was. On the cable front, ESPN edged out Nickelodeon as the top social cable network with 13% cable social share. Other data from the report finds that the NCAA Championship Game, WrestleMania, Bad Girls Club, the NBA Playoffs, and the Billboard Latin Music Awsards were the most social telecasts throughout the month. And in terms of genre, reality TV generated the most social buzz at 36%.

Tablet owners in America use their devices inside the home 74% of the time, according to a study from Viacom covering Q1 2012, per an eMarketer report. 96% of those who use a tablet at home said they use it in the living room, and 94% said they use it in the bedroom; this supports the idea that the tablet is being used for entertainment purposes, such as watching content or playing games. Of note, 75% of respondents indicated they use the tablet inside the home office. As for outside the home, the report found that the airport/airplane (80%), coffee shop (72%), outdoor public place and appointment (64% each), work (59%), and public transit (58%) were the most common places where tablet owners used their device. Interestingly, the store was only cited by 36% of respondents.

This week comScore launched its Mobile Metrix 2.0 service in the U.S., focused on providing insights into U.S. mobile media usage across apps and the mobile web. To complement the launch, comScore also released some data covering that very topic. Among the highlights:

  • Across iOS, Android, and RIM users 18 years and older, Google Sites ranked as the top property with nearly 94 million unique visitors, representing 96.9% of the mobile audience, in March 2012. Facebook came in second at 78 million visitors and 80.4% reach.
  • When it comes to apps versus mobile web, apps drove a significant portion of engagement, accounting for 81.5% of share of total time spent.
  • The top iPhone apps were iTunes, Google Maps, Facebook, YouTube, and Yahoo Weather. The top Android smartphone apps were Android Market, Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, and Facebook.
  • The average Facebook user spent over 7 hours on the social network via its mobile app or the mobile web. The average Twitter users spent a little under 2 hours, and the average Foursquare user spent over 2 hours and 25 minutes.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Viggle, the mobile social TV app that rewards users for checking into programs they’re watching on TV, is announcing that it has attracted 625,000 registered users to date. These users have redeemed points over 375,000 times for prizes such as free movie tickets on Fandango, Starbucks coffee, and items from Best Buy, iTunes, and Amazon. The company cites Trendrr data in reporting that on April 23, Viggle generated more than 40% of the social activity around the top three shows in the “What’s On” section of the app. For its partnership with USA Network to offer an interactive social TV experience around the network’s airing of To Kill a Mockingbird on April 7, 62% of Viggle users checked in, with the film becoming one of the top trending programs on TV that evening. The company says the average Viggle session tops 93 minutes.

The “new” iPad from Apple will be expanding to 30 new countries this coming weekend, including 13 new countries in Latin America, according to MacRumors. The website is reporting that the new iPad is also awaiting approval before it can be sold in China, Honduras, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Paraguay, and the Philippines.

Nuance Communications has announced that its Dragon voice technology is powering the voice control capabilities of the 2012 line of Samsung Smart TVs. It enables users to change channels, search for content on the web, access Samsung’s Smart Hub, and/or connect with others via Skype, as well as turn on the TV.

Agency CEO Alan Morell has been named Advisor to the Board and Senior Management of Engagement Media Technologies (EMT), a provider of the Engage.Me mobile engagement platform.
