Apple has unveiled a new iPad and an update to Apple TV. The rumors did have one thing wrong, though, it’s not the “iPad 3” or even the “iPad HD”; Apple is simply referring to its new tablet as the “new iPad,” eliminating the use of a numerical designation. Key features include an enhanced display, a faster processor, a five megapixel camera that can shoot video in 1080p and a new voice dictation tool that supports several languages. The new iPad will be compatible with 4G LTE networks from AT&T and Verizon and will be priced the same as the iPad 2 ($499 for the 16GB). As for the Apple TV update, it includes access to iCloud, which itself now will work with video content that is purchased through iTunes. Also of note, Netflix has announced that users can sign up for the service directly through Apple TV, and can pay for it through their iTunes account. Both the new iPad and Apple TV will be available on March 16.
EPIX will stream an interactive Q&A with the creators of the upcoming movie, The Cabin in the Woods, Josh Whedon and Drew Goddard. To be conducted at South by Southwest, the Q&A will be presented live at 1pm ET from Austin, TX. It will be open to all fans, who can submit questions for Whedon and Goddard via Facebook or Twitter, chat with other participants and follow the conversation via EpixHD.com, HitFix.com and through EPIX’s, Lionsgate’s and HitFix’s Facebook pages. HitFix Film Editor will be hosting the Q&A. The film is set to open the Festival this Friday.
Mass Relevance, an official Twitter partner that has access to the micro-blogging site’s Firehose, has launched Companion, an HTML5-based user interface that the company calls a second-screen product for brands and media. Through the new product, producers and advertisers can deliver relevant, real-time social content and visualizations via an HTML5 web experience. The capabilities of Companion can be witnessed on Mass Relevance’s SXSW Social Viewer, an interactive guide to the South by Southwest 2012 that captures relevant social conversations regarding the festival, along with a real-time summary and visual content about what is happing at the moment.
As part of its coverage of South by Southwest, IFC will premiere exclusive content, such as interviews, musical performances and red carpet coverage of the events in Austin, on IFC.com.

The version 4.7 release gives users the ability to monitor multiple terrestrial and mobile transport streams in real time from any location across the network, through a single, integrated product. It also features extended audio loudness monitoring and analysis capabilities. A subsidiary of LG Electronics, Triveni Digital is focused on developing products and solutions that enable TV service providers and broadcasters to deploy enhanced programs and services to their viewers.
comScore‘s MobiLens report for January 2012 finds that the number of U.S. smartphone owners has surpassed the 100 million mark, jumping up 13% from October 2011 to 101.3 million. Google’s Android remained the top operating system with a 48.6% market share (+2.3% since last October), and was followed by Apple’s iOS, which captured a 29.5% market share (+1.4%), and RIM (15.2%; -2.0%). In terms of mobile content usage, 48.6% of smartphone owners used downloaded apps (+4.8%); 48.5% used a mobile browser (+4.5%); 35.7% accessed a social networking site or blog (+3.4%); and 31.8% played games (+2.6%).
Social recommendations have received a renewed focus within the digital advertising space following the introduction of new ad units that place an emphasis on friend connections the social network. With that in mind, Nielsen analyzed results from 79 ad campaigns on Facebook over a period of six months to determine the effectiveness of social advertising, defined by Nielsen as those served to users who have friends that are fans or have interacted with the advertised brand, prominently calling the relationship out. Nielsen found that social advertising, on average, generates a 55% greater lift in ad recall than non-social ads. According to the report, it’s not surprising. Nielsen cites a separate study it conducted in 2011 that found that 76% of U.S. web consumers said they most trusted recommendations from personal acquaintances.
Timed perfectly with the main headline of Apple’s new iPad, eMarketer, in a new report, predicts there will be 60 million iPad users in the U.S. by 2014, up from 28 million in 2011. It also forecasts iPad penetration in the U.S. to rise from just over 12% in 2011 to 22% in 2013. However, Apple’s tablet will also lose some market share in the coming years, with eMarketer predicting the drop to be from 83% in 2011 to 68% by the end of 2014. This prognostication is fueled by the rise of other tablets such as the Kindle Fire.

Guinness World Records has tapped Peter Harper to head its U.S. office.
