The FTC and Google have settled privacy violation charges leveled against the company when it launched its invasive Google Buzz social network in early 2010. (Buzz was widely criticized for involuntarily sharing private email lists and other info. as part of its default settings.) The settlement requires Google to implement a comprehensive privacy program to insure the privacy protection of users going forward, calling for biennial independent privacy audits for the next 20 years. This marks a first time the FTC has exacted such a pledge. Google Director of Privacy Alma Whitten duly apologized for the “mistakes” it made with Buzz in blog post and claimed that the announcement puts “this incident behind us.”
Bravo, which announced several new series pick ups yesterday, is introducing a new “transmedia” play into its Top Chef franchise for next season, playing out the show’s competitive storyline across multiple platforms. Users will be drawn into interacting with the show across mobile, online, tablets, social media and on-air, unlocking new levels of content and ultimately driving further engagement.
The Academy of Country Music and Dick Clark Productions is turning to Livestream once again to offer a live streaming version of Sunday night’s GAC red carpet pre-show as well as VOD content including “Duets,” which pairs up-and-coming artists on YouTube with Country Music stars. The VOD content will also be available at ACMCountry.com, VEVO, AOL.com, GACTV.com and CBS.com.
Putting a new moniker on the term “low budget” is Lionsgate with a new initiative to release “Microbudget” movies made for $2 million or less. The first three releases scheduled for later his year are “Rapturepalooza,” a post-apocalyptic comedy, “Gay Dude”, a coming-of-age comedy, and “6 Miranda Drive,” a supernatural thriller.
Digital over-the-top set-top manufacturer Roku, which has thus far relied on direct web sales to grow its 1 million + user base, announced that its products will now be available at your local Best Buy. The first Roku model to hit Best Buy Stores nationwide will be the $80 Roku XD player, featuring 1080p playback and Wi-Fi connectivity. Roku’s content integrations include Netflix, Amazon, Hulu Plus, Crackle, MLB, NBA and NHL.
Having trouble keeping up with all the daily deal sites? Shoparatti is a new service edited by Melissa Rivers that aggregates all the deals from the various competing sites, available online, via Facebook or through an iPhone app. It’s currently available for 10 cities including LA, New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Seattle.
Vancouver-based CG animation studio Rainmaker Entertainment launched a new channel on YouTube featuring an original short animated feature, Zapped!, starring company mascots Ting and Juma.
The Coca-Cola Perfect Harmony program invites American Idol fans to go to AmericanIdol.com and submit lyrics to complete each verse of a song written by singer-songwriter Taio Cruz. The finished product set to be performed by Taio on the season finale of American idol. The promotion is part of the larger Coca-Cola Music Program, which kicked off last week with 24hr creation and jam session streamed live from London on mycoke.com.
A new upcoming memoir from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, excerpted on the Vanity Fair website on Wed., alleges that Bill Gates conspired with Steve Ballmer to dilute Allen’s shares after he was treated for Cancer the first time in 1982, according to a report in the WSJ., which obtained an advance copy of the book.
Enterprise cloud computing firm Salesforce.com has agreed to buy online monitoring company Radian6 for about $326 million in stock and cash in attempt to try and monitor the “hundreds of millions” of daily conversations across Facebook, Twitter and other online communities. The company says Radian6’s software will help its clients track and analyze what’s being said about their brands, products, competitors and services across the web.
After major internet provider BCE Inc. said it was going to hit resellers with data overage charges based on actual usage, Netflix announced it has reduced on the amount of bandwidth it uses in Canada by one third. (The company promised that the change will have a minimal effect on customers.) Bandwidth metering and caps is already gearing up to become a major issue in the next Canadian elections, reports Reuters.
Fast growing History has become the second cable network to surpass 4 million fans on Facebook, trailing only MTV, which has a massive 18.1 million Facebook fans to date. The social networking success corresponds to the network’s on air success; for the month of March, History was ranked as the #2 cable network among Adults 25-54 in primetime, according to Nielsen – its best showing ever.

African-Americans 18-49 used their TVs an average of 7 hours 12 min. each day in Nov. 2010-far above the total U.S. average of 5 hours 11 min., according to a new TV usage trend report from Nielsen. Asians used their TVs the least, just 3 hours and 14 minutes on average. African-Americans also used DVD players and video game consoles more than average. Across all households, White households’ primetime usage increased by 5.0 rating points with DVR playback, more than any other group. Asian homes had usage growth of 3.1 rating points, while African-American and Hispanic households increased their usage by more than 2 rating points with the additional DVR playback.
App developers have longed looked for a simple way to tap users for incremental revenue. Google has answered their wishes by launching a new in-app billing system for Android, offering developers the chance to sell virtual goods, upgrades and other goodies around their games. Google will take an industry-standard 30% of the revenue generated from in-app purchases. Several apps launched yesterday taking advantage of the functionality, including:

- Comics by ComiXology
- Gun Bros, Deer Hunter Challenge HD, and WSOP3 by Glu Mobile
- Dungeon Defenders: FW Deluxe by Trendy Entertainment
Tracking solution provider TagMan has upped Angus Glover Wilson from VP/Operations to the newly created position of Chief Privacy Officer to address growing privacy concerns related to the online marketing industry.
Toronto-based GlassBOX Television Inc. promoted Simon Foster from VP to SVP/Digital Publishing and Business Development. He will oversee the digital side of GlassBOX’s specialty TV networks including AUX TV, BITE TV and Travel & Escape.
Content discovery platform Outbrain hired former Carmel Ventures principal Gilad de Vries as VP/Brands & Agencies and Josh Feller as VP/Business Development. John LoGiocco has also been promoted to SVP/Sales and Business Development. All three will be based in the firm’s New York headquarters.
Google is looking to mimic Facebook’s ubiquitous ‘Like’ button, with its own “+1″ button on Google search results, currently being tested with about 2% of U.S. users. If you come across something you’d like to recommend to friends when you’re searching, simply click on the +1 button and Google account friends and contacts will see you’re seal of approval if the result appears in one of their searches. Logged-in users can share their recommendations with contacts through their Gmail address book, Google Reader and Buzz contacts. The button will soon become available to third-party sites such as Twitter as well, according to Google, and appears to the beginning of range of steps to socialize Google’s software.
