Disney/ABC Television Group has announced a partnership with Nielsen to measure video consumption on iPads. Disney/ABC said that with Apple reporting that more than 55 million iPads have been sold to date and 3 million new iPads since its launch on March 16, it is a “top priority” for the media industry to understand the importance of “how, when and where consumers use tablets.” To that end, Nielsen will create an iPad panel, and will ask 200 individuals to download a special “meter” that will measure the reach, duration, frequency and page views of their mobile web and app usage. The opt-in panel will measure video consumption, app usage and other activity over the coming year. The two companies say that this study will offer the first view of actual iPad behavior (rather than self-reported data), along with other insights.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Shaftesbury and its digital media division, Smokebomb Entertainment, have announced casting and production details around their latest digital venture, State of Syn. Starring Jewel Staite (Firefly) and David Hewlett (Stargate SG-1), State of Syn is a 3D-enabled “digital motion novel” for online, smartphone and tablet devices that combines live-action photography with animated “hyper-real” backgrounds. Production is slated to begin in early April in Toronto, with the project expected to launch during this coming summer, as well as being offered to buyers as a standalone property for multiple platforms at MIPTV 2012 in Cannes. The sci-fi mystery series will feature 10, five-minute episodes that take place in a futuristic society “where instability reigns but one commodity remains accessible to all: technology.”

One of the top websites for women, SheKnows, which attracts more than 55 million monthly unique visitors, has partnered up with actress Kate Walsh to launch a new, five-part video talk series. Dubbed The Lounge: Boyfriend Talk with Kate Walsh, the series will feature the actress and her friends and family, as well as some SheKnows readers, discussing and providing insights on the topic of boyfriends.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Mobile ad network Millennial Media has officially priced its initial public offering at $13 per share for 10.2 million shares of common stock. The shares are expected to begin trading today in the New York Stock Exchange under the “MM” ticker symbol. Millennial will only be offering 9.2 million shares, with the other 1 million coming from selling stockholders. As noted yesterday, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Barclays Capital are the joint bookrunners for the offering.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

AT&T AdWorks will begin to test out a new mobile ad unit that features integration with Foursquare, according to AdWeek. Slated to begin with an unspecified retailer, the new ad unit will encourage consumers to check-in to Foursquare by clicking on a regular mobile banner ad, after which they will be shown nearby locations of the advertisers’ or brands’ stores. Those who click on the locations will have access to Foursquare-based information, offers and content about that location/brand. This integration is an extension of AT&T AdWorks’ store locator mobile unit, which was tested by Levi’s last year and witnessed a 10.3% click-through rate, according to the report. AT&T AdWorks says the service will “eventually” be rolled out to other advertisers.

BlackArrow has announced that Rogers Communications is deploying the BlackArrow Advanced Advertising System to power a new advertising marketplace for its video-on-demand TV services in Canada. BlackArrow’s platform provides cable operators and programmers with real-time, multiplatform ad management and decision solutions that can be used to deliver relevant and targeted ads during VOD sessions. It will enable Rogers to dynamically insert pre-, post- and mid-roll ads into its on-demand programming, as well as measure their performance in real-time at the impression level.

Conduit, a web and mobile software company, has plans to unveil a custom lock-screen feature that will enable the brands that deliver breaking information such as news, sports and weather to distribute such information on a mobile device’s lock-screen, reports CNET. Ori Lavie, VP/Mobile Strategy at Conduit, tells CNET that this new unit is prime real estate, as it allows brands to get higher exposure, which would drive more traffic to their app or website. Conduit says that it will be able to get this lock-screen offering on as much as 80% of all Android-powered phones. The company currently offers an Android app that allows users to access apps and other features on their phone straight from the lock-screen. CNET notes a trend that has moved the lock-screen away from the original “swipe-to-unlock” model, citing Apple’s inclusion of direct access into the camera and to emails and messages, as well as several custom lock-screens that can be downloaded on Google Play.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

WebCollage has inked a deal with Channel IQ to incorporate the latter’s pricing intelligence and channel management solutions into the former’s rich media product information service for retailers’ websites. The partnership will ensure that a product’s pricing throughout the online retail channel is consistent with the positioning and pricing agreements between manufacturers and retailers. WebCollage delivers and manages real-time, automatic content updates (can include videos, images, texts and tours) to product information across a network of retailer websites, which currently include, among others, Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

The recently released Mojiva Mobile Advertising Portal (MAP) highlights mobile advertising trends in North America from November 2011 to January 2012. Through analysis of billions of ad requests, Mojiva found that rich media ads experienced a 235% spike in impressions over this period across the globe. Among the other highlights from the report include: More than 60% of ad requests in the North American region came from apps in January 2012; gaming publishers experienced a 24% boost in impressions, while social and tech publishers saw an increase of 33% each, over the three-month period; over 70% of users on the Mojiva network used Wi-Fi to browse the web or access apps, instead of their carrier’s data signal. Of note, Mojiva reported a reach of over 1.1 billion devices across the globe in January 2012.

comScore and consumer-based video network EXPO have released the results of a study designed to gauge the synergistic value of professionally-produced video content and user-generated product videos in marketing campaigns. The results indicate that a combination of both professionally-produced (PP) videos and user-generated (UG) content can drive higher levels of sales effectiveness. In the study, PP content generated a 24.7 point lift in share of choice for the featured product and a 16 point lift in the brand’s total line. In comparison, UG content drove an 18.7 point lift in share of choice for the featured product and a 10 point lift in the brand’s total line. When both formats were combined, the lift in share of choice for the featured product jumped to 35.3 points and 28 points for the brand’s total line. A second aspect of the study showed that PP content is more effective in helping consumers understand the importance of the key message, while UG videos are better at producing emotional intensity, key message communication and were more relatable. However, even here, PP content and UG videos are more effective when combined than when used individually.

On the Google+ Brand Pages of the 62 Verified accounts among Interbrand’s top 100 brands, Wednesday is the most popular day for brand activity, as well as users’ engagement with said activity, according to eMarketer, which cites a study from social media measurement outfit Simply Measured. From November 2011 to March 13, 2012, there were 1,158 posts on Wednesdays across these top accounts, accounting for 21.1% of all brand posts. The study also took a look at Google+ activity among the top brands and its users in terms of time of day. It found that the morning, specifically between 9am and 11am, is when most of the activity from both brands and users is happening.

The report is password-protected and is delivered to you via an emailed link. In a blog post announcing the availability, Andreas Tuerk, Product Manager, wrote, “Knowing more about your own account activity can help you take steps to protect your Google Account. For example, if you notice sign-ins from countries where you haven’t been or devices you’ve never owned,” you can take immediate steps to secure your account, such as change the password or sign-up for Google Account’s two-step verification process.
