Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 28, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Netflix’s original programming push continues with another huge name, or I guess, names, from the film industry. In late 2014, Netflix plans to premiere a new sci-fi series called Sense8. The show’s creative team consists of Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5). It will be produced by Georgeville Television, an independent studio under Reliance Entertainment, in association with Straczynski’s Studio JMS. With a first season order of 10 episodes, the sci-fi thriller will be about “the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us,” according to the Wachowskis.


A new network for millenials will launch on August 1: pivot, from Participant Media. pivot will be available through traditional Pay TV packages, offered by multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) across the country. For these subscribers, pivot will allow subscribers to stream the network, both live and on demand. pivot will also offer a broadband-only subscription, including a linear stream of the network and access to programming on demand. Its first six greenlit series include offerings from director/creator/actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Meghan McCain. The network also announced a joint venture with Univision News and Latin World Entertainment to co-produce ten, one-hour documentaries that will air on pivot in English and Univision in Spanish.

Newsy has struck a deal with Mashable for which it will produce three to seven videos every day. Per the announcement, Mashable editors will pick out developing stories that are relevant to Mashable’s social, tech, and web culture centric audience. They will then work with Newsy’s production team in real time to create news videos on those stories, which can encompass anything from product reviews to segments and interviews with internet celebrities. Some of the videos will serve as stand-alone news pieces, while others will accompany an article published on Mashable.

On April 30, Food Network is launching a companion web series tied to its cooking competition show Chopped. Titled Chopped: After Hours, the show will feature show judges such as Chris Santos and Aaron Sanchez making something out of the same basket of ingredients from an episode they just judged. The first episode will debut following the April 30 episode, and will be made available on the show’s site on The plan is to air 10 total episodes at various times through the end of the year.

Yahoo Finance and CNBC have launched a new show called Big Data Download. Hosted by CNBC’s Courtney Reagan, with regular appearances from Yahoo Finance’s Editor-in-Chief Aaron Task, Senior Columnist Michael Santoli, and co-host of The Daily Ticker, Lauren Lyster, Big Data Download is a daily show that’ll use intel gathered from the Yahoo Labs team to inform investors and business-types about issues relevant to them, such as the housing market, the S&P 500, and the economics behind current gas prices. The show airs twice every weekday, at 11am and 2pm ET.

Spanish animation studio BRB Internacional is launching a new “aggregator” program which will help independent creators launch, manage, and monetize their content on YouTube. BRB currently operates its own branded YouTube channel, as well as several others for its cartoon series. The studio says it will help its producer partners promote their content on BRB channels, too.


Online video tech start-up Ooyala has launched several new products to help content providers distribute video across multiple screens.They are:

  • Discovery Guide: Enables content providers to offer a personalized channel lineup featuring both live and VOD content. The tech behind the product uses program schedules, behavioral data, content metadata, and user inputs, as well as real-time analytics and optimization algorithms to provide content recommendations based on what the viewer is most likely to watch.
  • Hook: A mobile video app that’s designed to help content owners distribute video to almost every Android device. It features live and linear streaming support, DRM technology, and HLS support for adaptive bitrate streaming. Available in Google Play, the app also supports ad insertions, including mid-rolls for linear and VOD content.
  • XTV Connect: A screen-sharing tech that enables users to send content from an iOS or Android device to a connected TV screen and device, including Apple TV.
  • Rights Locker: An entitlement system to help manage permissions for linear and VOD content on a per-user basis. Integrating with a publisher’s subscriber management system, the Rights Locker is capable of granting rights to individual assets or a bundle.

Velti has unveiled a new mobile ad network called Velti Media as well as a new data analytics platform to help advertisers reach consumers across devices. The analytics platform, called Multichannel Targeting, enables advertisers to target consumers with relevant ads and marketing campaigns across smartphones, tablets, and PCs. This, Velti says, will allow clients to re-target from desktop to mobile in order to further engage with that consumer.

BlueKai has added 17 new members to its Partner Program, a network of media, marketing, and ad tech companies that have integrated BlueKai technology into their offerings. The new partnerships cover dynamic creative optimization, website content optimization, real-time customer experience, lookalike modeling, social, and mobile. Of note, Facebook is one of BlueKai’s new social partners, and Jumptap and Tapad are among the company’s new mobile ad partners.

Outcast Media, the company that owns and operates nearly 19,000 out-of-home screens in the US, is now working with BroadSign International to manage media and advertising across its Fuel and Fitness networks. Outcast’s digital networks offer a bunch of programming from the likes of Fox News, ABC, MLB, NFL Network, and Flixster, as well as branded content/ads.


Twitter will pull make $582.8 million in global ad revenue this year, and will come close to $1 billion next year. This is according to a new forecast from eMarketer, which attributes the expected surge over the next couple of years to mobile ads. Per the forecast, mobile advertising will account for 53% of Twitter’s ad revenues this year, reaching $308.9 million, which would be more than the $288.3 million the company made in total, from any ad type, in 2012. Looking ahead, eMarketer expects Twitter to generate $1.33 billion in global ad revenue in 2015, of which more than 60% will be due to mobile ads.

— In other words: Twitter’s solved the mobile ad puzzle for itself, though it’s not difficult to see why: “Twitter also continues to benefit from what has been termed the ‘native’ nature of its ad products, whose integration with the core user experience of the platform allows the company to deliver ads seamlessly across devices at high volume,” says eMarketer.


Adam Smith has been promoted to VP/Digital Ad Operations within ESPN’s Sales and Marketing Business Operations team. In the new role, he will continue to work with the Digital Media and Ad Sales teams to develop global operational strategy supporting the company’s sales and product development plans. He will also oversee operational efforts relating to ad sales for WatchESPN.

Social marketing solutions company Dachis Group has named Erin Mulligan Nelson as its new President. Previously a SVP and CMO at Dell and CMO at Bazaarvoice, Nelson will now oversee Dachis’ end-to-end market strategy and execution.

Adam Cooper has joined Wenner Media to serve as East Coast Digital Sales Director for Rolling Stone. Cooper says he will oversee digital revenue for the magazine on the East Coast as well as digital products and strategy. Most recently, Cooper was Senior Digital Account Executive at ESPN.


Lionsgate‘s health-centric YouTube channel, BeFit, is now offering bi-monthly videos from Heel Hop, a fitness brand created by instructor and dance choreographer Kamilah. The minute-long videos will feature easy-to-follow fitness/dance moves, some of which have awesome names like “The Clydesdale.” BeFit also features content from the likes of Jane Fonda, Deepak Chopra, and Jillian Michaels. I think sometimes in all the YouTube programming coverage, it gets lost in the shuffle that the site also can be a great platform for utili-tainment, whether that’s health videos or DIY content. BeFit, with its 250,000+ plus subscribers and videos from recognizable names in the health and fitness world, is a good testament to that.
