We’ve got kids news covered for you daily during Upfront season…

Looks like Dora is exploring the tablet world. Select kinder-focused Nabi Jr. tablets will be preloaded with Nickelodeon content including video programming, apps and games thanks to a multiyear deal between the network and tablet maker Fuhu Inc. The new Nick-themed touch-screen Nabi Jr. tablet launches this month with content from Dora the Explorer, Team Umizoomi and Bubble Guppies. This spring, a line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-inspired tablet accessories will hit retail, ranging in price from $19.99 to $79.99.

“We are thrilled to partner with Fuhu, Inc. They are a leader in designing state of the art devices and kid-friendly mobile tablet accessories,” said Manuel Torres, SVP, global toys and consumer electronics for Nickelodeon Consumer Products. Fuhu is also an associate sponsor of Nick’s Kids’ Choice Awards this year.

Of Mice and Hippos: There’s a new kids hangout in the cyber neighborhood. Hyper Hippo Productions, a digital studio from two of the masterminds behind Disney’s Club Penguin, launches this week. Founded by Lance Priebe, co-founder and creator of Club Penguin, and Pascal Audette, former VP, global operations for Disney Online Studios, Hyper Hippo will focus on applications and compelling storytelling that reward good actions and values. First release is Mech Mice, an episodic journey targeted at kids 10 and up. The property is scheduled for release in late 2013, with an open beta program this summer. “We are dedicated to creating a fantastic studio that will not only radically change how the industry perceives digital entertainment, but one that will positively impact children’s lives for years to come,” Audette said in a statement.

Digital Update

Younger consumers engage in social media activities while watching video programming more often than their older counterparts. That’s the news from a new Motorola Mobility study of 9,500 global consumers. Sixty percent of respondents aged 16-24 said they engage in social conversations in front of the tube, while only 50% of the entire group reported engaging in social media.

Who’s hungry? Yesterday was The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, a three-year-old celebration of Eric Carle’s food fest being touted by Joester Loria Group and Penguin Young Readers Group. In honor of the event, Night and Day Studios launched a new themed iOS app, The Very Hungry Caterpillar Sticker Book app.

Spain’s BRB Internacional is redesigning its web site with specific sections for parents and schools, plus a new blog that focuses on kids and technology. Bilingual in both English and Spanish, version 2.0 strengthens its goal of facilitating communication between teachers and parents by launching a monitored two-track communications tool.

Licensing News

Temple Run’s run continues with three new licensing deals for the downloadable game this week from U.K. and Europe licensing agent Lisle International. Blues Clothing, Trade Mark Collections and Fashions U.K. all are designing apparel targeting boys age 7 and up.

U.K. preschool series The Hive is buzzing with licensing deals. Space Enterprises, licensing agent for the brand, just signed on Igloo Books as a publishing partner, bringing the Hive characters to print for the first time. The Igloo deal follows recent agreements with Studio Anne Carlton for fridge magnets and Lifespan for theme-packaged honey.

Trends & Research

No surprise here. Generation Z (ages 13-18) is uber-connected. In fact, 100% of team Z connect to technology for at least an hour a day, with 46% connected for 10-plus (!) hours a day, according to a new report from Wikia and Ipsos Media CT. In fact, 25% of GenZers are actively connected within five minutes of waking up, and 73% are connected within an hour of waking up. What’s more, 93% of respondents said they check YouTube at least once a week, and 54% reported that they visit the video site multiple times per day. 65% said they visit Facebook weekly and 38% visit the social network multiple times per day. Among the other social media services, 26% visit Twitter, 26% visit Google+, and 17% visit Instagram on a weekly basis.

Sprout’s online retail outlet Shop Sprout is officially open for business, and not a moment too soon. With its push into more originals Noodle & Doodle, Pajanimals and The Chica Show president Sandy Wax says there’s been a swell of inquiries from parents about how their kids can continue to cuddle and play with popular characters after the TV gets turned off. “We’ve had massive demand, and the natural evolution is to be able to allow our audience to play along with our characters and series and interact with them,” she says. Big Tent Entertainment is handling U.S. licensing for Sprout.
