Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment reported a net loss of $636.6 million for 2023, versus $111.2 million in 2022. Without additional financing, the company said it would likely have to “diminish or halt operations” and seek protection from applicable bankruptcy laws.” What happened? Our relatively recent acquisitions of Redbox, 1091 Pictures, Crackle, and the assets of Sonar, required time-consuming and costly integration efforts,” said the company in its delayed 10-K filing. “To date, these efforts have not been successful as we have not realized the anticipated benefits of such acquisitions and our operations have been adversely affected. We believe in the value of these assets but would require additional capital resources to fully realize their value, and we may not be able to secure such capital resources on commercially reasonable terms or at all.”

E. W. Scripps is considering selling multicast channel Bounce, reports CNBC. Bounce, which targets Black viewers, was part of the package of Katz networks Scripps purchased in 2017.

Apparently, moderation matters. YouTube videos from brands saw the best positive interaction rate – or percentage of respondents who engage with marketing from a brand in a favorable manner – with 68%, according to a study from LiveIntent. Facebook scored a positive interaction rate of 62%, 14 percentage points better than X, which had the lowest positive interaction rate among those surveyed. “While user-generated content always makes marketers queasy, there are gradations of nausea,” said Adam Berkowitz, Chief of Staff at LiveIntent. “Those platforms with a modicum of moderation have seen more adoption from advertisers. Platforms with as much unfettered access as possible to a publisher’s trusted content see better sentiment.”

11:11 Media, the media and lifestyle company co-founded by Paris Hilton and Bruce Gersh, has optioned Sarah Ditum’s Toxic: Women, Fame, and the Tabloid 2000s to adapt as a docuseries. The book explores misogyny in the 2000s, through essays exploring the lives of nine female celebrities.

Wheelhouse announced its first outside capital raise, led by investment firm Alignment Growth. Comprised of several production companies, including Spoke Studios, Campfire, Butternut, Wheelhouse UK and DNA, Wheelhouse also has production partnerships in place with Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot and Chef David Chang’s Majordomo Media.

STARZ is rounding out the cast for “Outlander: Blood of My Blood.” Onboard are Sally Messham (“A Small Light”), Terence Rae (“The Cyclops”), Sadhbh Malin (“Conversations with Friends” ), Ailsa Davidson (“Heathers”), Annabelle Dowler (“It Takes Two”), and Harry Eaton (“Eastenders”). NEW SERIES

Investigation Discovery’s “Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter” premieres across two nights beginning Monday, May 27 at 9p. The four-part docuseries pulls back the curtain on the fraught dynamic of the Carter family, including accusations of sexual assault against Nick Carter by three women, while also looking at his brother, Aaron Carter’s, struggles with mental health and substance abuse.

Apple TV+ limited series “Presumed Innocent” will premiere Wednesday, June 12, following its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 9. The eight-episode thriller starring and executive produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, hailing from David E. Kelley and executive producer J.J. Abrams, is based on bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow.

“Billy Corgan’s Adventures in Carnyland” kicks off Tuesday, May 14 on The CW app and cwtv.com. The unscripted series follows the Smashing Pumpkins front man.

COMING UP

Sand-up special “Marlon Wayans: Good Grief” premieres June 4 on Netflix. The show, taped at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, is produced by Wayans and Rick Alvarez’s Ugly Baby Productions and Amazon MGM Studios.

The Parks Channel has teamed with CTV video and games provider Play.Works to deliver an AVOD app experience that helps viewers discover the range of America’s parks. RETAIL MEDIA

Saks has launched a new retail media network, leveraging first-party customer data and its 435 million annual visits to help brands reach customers right when they’re ready to reach for their wallet. “With the launch of our Saks Media Network, we are expanding our offerings for brand partners by helping their products reach the right luxury customers when and where they are actively looking to purchase,” said Kristin Maa, SVP, Growth, Saks. “Our view of the full shopping journey across the Saks Fifth Avenue digital and physical ecosystem enables meaningful, personalized customer engagement and product discovery, and the Saks Media Network is the next step in leveraging our data-driven insights and industry expertise to enhance the customer experience.”

Advendio, the retail media advertising platform, announced new features aimed at helping retailers optimize retail media campaign performance. ADvendio will launch its Data Clean Rooms feature, to assist retailers address cookie depreciation, and roll out new Ad Ops capabilities, including the development of the company’s Creative Management & Validation feature, enabling users to upload campaign creatives and assets centrally on the platform and use external servers to validate them.

TECH

Meta Platforms reported financial results for the quarter ended March 31 that beat expectations. DAP (daily active people) was 3.24 billion on average for March, an increase of 7% year-over-year; average price per ad increased by 6% year-over-year; and total revenue and revenue on a constant currency basis were $36.46 billion and $36.35 billion, respectively, both of which increased by 27% year-over-year. Total costs and expenses were $22.64 billion, an increase of 6% year-over-year. “It’s been a good start to the year,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Meta founder and CEO. “The new version of Meta AI with Llama 3 is another step towards building the world’s leading AI. We’re seeing healthy growth across our apps and we continue making steady progress building the metaverse as well.” Still, shares of the company fell more than 11% in after-hours trading after the company provided 2Q24 guidance that anticipated total revenue to be in the range of $36.5 billion-$39 billion, and full-year 2024 capital spending to hit $35 billion-40 billion.

Citing “ongoing challenges related to reconciling divergent feedback from the industry, regulators and developers,” Google has once again delayed its elimination of third-party browser cookies, which had been set to take place at the end of the year. The phase-out is now slated for 2025, assuming Google receives approvals from the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority and Information Commissioner’s Office. “This will allow time to assess the results of industry tests and resolve remaining issues,” said a spokesperson for the CMA.

DoubleVerify has received Media Rating Council accreditation for Video Viewable Impressions and related viewability metrics in the CTV environment. The accreditation expands DV’s MRC accreditations for its CTV pre-bid data segments to include property-level brand suitability, contextual and Fully On-screen segments. “We commit to uphold the highest standards of data accuracy and transparency in digital media,” said Mark Zagorski, CEO of DoubleVerify. “This new accreditation further expands our extensive MRC accreditations across DV’s industry-leading pre- and post-bid CTV solution to give global advertisers greater clarity and confidence in their premium CTV investments.”

Media Rating Council has released an update of the invalid traffic (IVT) guidance for third-party measurement firms used by advertisers to avoid buying fraudulent ad inventory. Of note: The update asks IVT detection and reporting providers to report invalid traffic on a property level, not just on an impression level.

President Biden signed the national security bill that requires that Chinese-owned ByteDance either sell TikTok, or be banned on app stores. See you in court, responded TikTok CEO Shou Chew in a social media post, adding, “The facts and Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail.”

Data intelligence platform Tracer looked at over 1 billion ad impressions from the week leading up to last month’s House vote on March 13 and the subsequent week, and found advertisers increasingly leveraging TikTok in the shadow of the potential ban. TikTok saw a 20% surge in advertising expenditure, suggesting that advertisers are intensifying their commitment to TikTok amidst a future of uncertainty. User engagement metrics on TikTok, such as click-through rates (CTR) and cost-per-click (CPC), remained steady in March.

Tubi has partnered with sports platform DAZN for a licensing agreement that will see DAZN Ringside and DAZN Women’s Football FAST Channels launch in the US and DAZN TV and DAZN Women’s Football FAST Channels launch in Canada. It’s the first time the DAZN Women’s Football FAST Channel will be available in North America.

UKTV announced the commission of “Mudtown” for its crime drama channel, Alibi. The six-part series is a co-commission with Welsh language free-to-air channel S4C and All3Media International.

CAKE has announced a deal with ITV on two seasons of “The Guava Juice Show.” Produced by Vancouver-based Mainframe Studios and Studio 71, the animated comedy adventure is set to stream on ITVX later this fall.

Lineup Industries’ format “We’ve Got to Walk” has won its first commission outside of its original territory of Belgium. RTS in Switzerland has picked up the show for a local remake where it will be called “San Detours.” Filming commences in the Swiss alps this month.

Across North America, the opening weekend of the Stanley Cup Playoffs delivered an average audience of 2.62 million viewers, up 11% year-over-year. ESPN and TNT Sports delivered the top three most-watched Round One Game 1s ever on US cable, with ESPN delivering 1.3 million viewers and TBS/truTV and Max scoring 1.1 million.

“The Spiderwick Chronicles,” which premiered April 19, has become the most-watched on demand title to debut on The Roku Channel. While specific numbers weren’t given, Roku said the show had the highest reach and most hours streamed of any show in its history.
