Cynopsis: DIGITAL
06.27.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Intel plans to release its own set-top box and Internet-based pay television service. Eric Free, a VP/GM of the chipmaker, outlined plans and told attendees at the TV of Tomorrow conference in San Francisco, “We’re very confident we’ll get the content we need to launch later this year.” Word from CNET is that more than 2,000 of the company’s employees are currently testing out the service, code named Black Box Project. Intel says it is willing to pay more for content than traditional cable and satellite providers, but will be able to serve up extremely targeted ads due to a built-in camera that will collect information on viewers’ habits.

New Programming + Deals

Discovery Communications is eyeing the launch of an Internet streaming service that would allow cable subscribers access to documentaries and reality shows from its networks including Discovery, TLC, Science and Animal Planet for a small fee. The move would sweeten the streaming proposition for Discovery fans. Netflix currently offers Discovery content that’s more than 18 months old, but the streaming service could offer content that’s aired between three and 18 months ago. Viewers will have to be patient, though. The service isn’t likely to launch for at least two years.

Amazon and PBS expanded their streaming partnership. Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service will now include “hundreds of additional episodes” of Nova and Masterpiece Theatre as well as other PBS shows, including such kids shows as Arthur and Caillou. The major feather in Amazon’s cap for this deal: It pushed aside Netflix in a fight over megahit Downton Abbey. Amazon now becomes the exclusive video subscription home to the third season of the show.

Multichannel online video isn’t just for U.S. companies. European broadcaster RTL just spent $36 million to purchase 51% of BroadbandTV in a move to bolster RTL’s place in online video. With more than 7,800 channels that capture 800 million video views each month, BroadbandTV is the fifth-largest multichannel network on YouTube.

Cable net History launched two new web series on History.com. Swamp People: After the Hunt and Count’s Kustoms: After Hours. Inspired by two of the channel’s shows-Swamp People and Counting Cars-the web series delve deeper into characters and storylines initiated on TV. Swamp launched Tuesday and Kustoms will launch Thursday.

My6sense, a provider of personalized content discovery and brand advertising for mobile publishers, received $2 million from a private angel investor, making for a grand total of $7.5 million raised to date. The company is shifting its focus from a consumer platform to the B2B marketplace with the introduction of its new Content Discovery Bar, which aims to ensure “effective mobile user engagement and branded content monetization via highly personalized mobile user content based on individual interests and preferences.”

AOL is looking for some online-talent help. The company wants to create more original programming and is in New York today and tomorrow scouting out news, sports, weather, entertainment and Internet anchors for AOL Live, which is slated to debut this summer. Auditions start at 5a, so there’s no time to be nervous. After all, anything interesting that happens will be streamed live on AOL.com.

Mobile Games + Apps

Turns out Microsoft‘s Age of Empires game won’t be made available only on iPhone and Android phones. The company says Empires will be available by year’s end on non-Microsoft products and then other Xbox console games will make the transition after that, though none have been named as of yet.

News shows are the leading genre of content watched on new mobile TV service Dyle, according to Rentrak. Among other findings:
* The average Dyle mobile TV device tunes in for more than 20 minutes per usage day
* Local and national network news represents more than half of the viewing time in some local markets
* Usage spikes during breaking-news cycles.
— 45% of Dyle mobile TV viewership occurs between 6a-4p. Only 36% of in-house viewership occurs during that time.

Content Everywhere

Fallen celebrity chef Paula Deen may have lost her Food Network contract, but Wherever TV is ready to bring her aboard whenever she wants. The company that provides subscription content to smart TVs, streaming media players, mobile devices and tablets has offered Deen her own 24/7 television channel to broadcast across all devices. No word on whether Deen will, ahem, bite.

Close to 60 million Americans, about 6% of U.S. households, are cord-cutters, according to a new study from GfK. In younger households, one of five never even got a TV subscription at all. Additionally, 28% of homes with a head of household under the age of 35 use an antenna rather than a traditional pay-TV subscription. Minorities make up 41% of all antenna households, according to the study.

TV and movie search engine Jinni launched a new way to search that makes recommendations based on the tastes of multiple viewers rather than an individual. Called Watch Together, the functionality uses the information of multiple members of Jinni to come up with suggestions.

Research

The DVR is still trumping streaming video when it comes to TV-viewing preferences. This according to new research from NPD Group. In the Q1 2013, viewers said they watched shows on DVRs and TiVo 42% while only using streaming video on demand 16% of the time. Standard linear viewing on broadcast TV networks still led the way with 81%, followed by watching scheduled cable TV programming with 65%. As for movies, DVR movie watching accounted for 36% of viewership in the first quarter while streaming video on demand only accounted for 19%. Playing owned DVDs or Blu-ray discs led the way with 59% and rented DVDs or discs came in at 21%.

Nielsen’s cross-platform campaign ratings tool, available in the States since last October, is now rolling out a beta in the United Kingdom with plans to expand to Australia, Canada, Germany and Italy in the coming weeks. These six countries represent the majority of ad dollars being spent online across the globe. Nielsen is trying to measure the platform-agnostic lives consumers live now and is testing the new tool alongside such brands as Unilever and Mondelez International.

Exec Moves

Eric Bader has been hired as the first CMO at RadiumOne, a late-stage startup that combines programmatic buying and social-data mining to deliver ads on digital, mobile and video channels. Bader most recently served as the chief strategy officer at Initiative and has worked at Ogilvy & Mather and MediaVest.

Richard Caccappolo has joined newspaper website MailOnline as COO. Caccappolo will divide his time between London and New York. He previously worked with iVillage.com; eMusic, Inc.; ORCA Digital Services; Hearst; Microsoft; Andersen Consulting, and Tesco. He also oversaw the technology and online efforts for Bob Kerrey’s 2012 US Senate campaign.

Unicorn Media added Chuck Parker as chief revenue officer and Prashanth Pappu as SVP, product management. Parker is the founder and chairman of the 2nd Screen Society and spent 15 years working at Technicolor. Pappu was previously head of product marketing at Conviva.

Digital Spotlight of the Day

The Lone Ranger will hit big screens on July 3 and Travelocity is getting into the PR act. In collaboration with New Mexico Tourism and Disney, four webisodes on the site’s Let’s Roam area will showcase the state where much of the film was shot. Two of the webisodes will be released this week and two more will come out next week, just to be sure viewers are in tune with the movie’s opening. It can’t be a coincidence that the next Roam recommended to me is set in Walt Disney World.
