TV Shows will soon be reaching Netflix subscribers across U.S. borders. CBS and Netflix have extended their non-exclusive licensing deal to Canada and 43 Latin America countries, expanding a domestic partnership struck earlier this year. The deal will cover past seasons of recent hits such as Dexter, Nurse Jackie and Medium, as well as oldies including Star Trek and Twin Peaks. Netflix also announced earlier this week that in-network Facebook integration will soon roll out for customers in Latin America and Canada, allowing subscribers to share what their renting or streaming with friends. The feature is not allowed here in the U.S. due to the VPAA privacy protection policies enacted back when a newspaper published the video rental records of Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork.
Fox‘s move to force online video viewers (who don’t subscribe to Hulu Plus or Dish Network) to wait 8 days before viewing new episodes has led to a predictable backlash from fans. Analysts are also questioning whether or not such restrictions will increase web piracy as the number and quality of illegal online outlets continues to flourish.
As part of its recently launched Artist Services Initiative, The Sundance Institute has partnered with several online video outlets including Hulu, Amazon, Netflix, iTunes, SundanceNOW and YouTube to help Sundance artists reach wider audiences. New Video will serve as the Institute’s exclusive aggregation partner for distribution across these portals, taking a small cut of the revenues. 2011 Sundance Film Festival entries “Connected: An Autoblogography about Love, Death & Technology” by director Tiffany Shlain and “On the Ice,” from director Andrew Okpeaha MacLean will be among the first titles distributed.
Discovery Networks International (DNI) has signed its first-ever 3D deals outside the U.S., linking agreements with BSkyB and Virgin Media in the U.K. and J:COM in Japan. Programming is expected to begin sometime next month and will span genres including natural history, engineering, extreme sports and crime documentary.
Taking aim at Google+ and its initial decision to leave off branded company pages, Facebook launched a new website dubbed Facebook for Business to offer tips on how to create corporate pages and build relationships with users.
The SEC is reviewing Groupon‘s operating-income accounting practices as part of routine review of its initial public offering, according to reports.
Addressable advertising specialist Visible World is introducing a new technology to allow sponsors to create and deliver targeted HD commercials, matched to relevant demographic data including geographic location or household make-up. The “Adtag/Adcopy” update will reach HD networks in 76 of the top 100 DMAs.
The House Judiciary Committee debated and marked up H.R. 1981 yesterday, a bill designed to impose data retention mandates on both broadband and wireless ISPs as well as on public Wi-Fi access points. The measure is meant to aid law enforcement officials in tracking child pornographers, but has incurred the wrath of small businesses and consumer rights groups such as the Center for Democracy & Technology, who object to its broad reach.
Michael Eisner’s Topps Co. has acquired Facebook’s leading gift card provider GMG Entertainment for an undisclosed amount. GMG sells cards in retail outlets including Best Buy, Target and GameStop that consumers can redeem for Facebook Credits, the digital currency all casual game developers are now required to use.
The proliferation of connected devices is leading to broader array of viewing patterns for online content. About half of all Netflix users are connecting to its streaming service using a game console while 89% of Hulu users tune into the service on their computers, according to a new Nielsen survey of 12,000 online users. The Nintendo Wii led all connected devices with 25% of Netflix users saying they connect to the service using their Wii console (compared to only 3% for Hulu.) Some 53% of Netflix users said they watched movies most often, while 73% of Hulu Users viewed TV shows. Other over-the-top, broadband-connected devices, such as Roku, Google TV and Apple TV, were also cited as a means for connecting with Hulu and Netflix, but in much smaller percentages. iPad usage was also relatively small, with only 3% of Netflix users reporting using the iPad to access content and only 1% of Hulu viewers.
The average selling price of games declined by 28% over the last year, while the revenue generated by the most successful freemium games increased tenfold during the same period in the Apple App Store for iPhone, according to the latest mobile data report from Netherlands-based Distimo. The presence of virtual currencies within games was cited as one of the main reasons behind the popularity and monetization success of in-app purchases; 35% of the 300 most popular free games in June used some sort of virtual currency as a monetization tool within Apple’s App Store for iPhone. A small number of publishers continue to dominate total game downloads: ten publishers account for more than half of all downloads among the 300 most popular paid games in the Apple App Store.
Just in time for the release of the feature film tomorrow, The Smurfs Movie Storybook app has rolled out from iStoryTime for iOS devices at the price of $2.99, featuring sneak peaks of exclusive images and voiceovers from the movie. Follow the adventures of Papa Smurf, Grouchy, Brainy, Clumsy, Gutsy, and Smurfette on their trip to New York City, while fleeing the bumbling wizard Gargamel and his misunderstood cat Azrael.
Rob Goldberg, CEO of GMG, will become VP and GM of Topp‘s new digital currency business, reporting to Topps CEO Ryan O’Hara.

Walmart.com is throwing its hat into the video streaming ring once again, finally integrating the digital movie service Vudu it acquired last year. Customers can buy or rent digital copies from all the major studios and watch them online or through the various connected devices that Vudu is up and running on, including Panasonic, Sharp and LG televisions or Sony’s PS3 game console. When one considers consumers’ increasing price sensitivity in this area (which Netflix experienced first hand,) Walmart is at least trying to introduce some pricing flexibility. Rental prices range from $3-$6, with $4 being the most common price point for new releases and a daily 99 cent “movie of the day” thrown in to drive traffic. The company says the Friday 99 cent selection will be determined by user votes via Wal-Mart’s Facebook page.
