A group made up mostly of cable MSOs and satellite TV companies calling itself the American Television Alliance (ATVA) has launched a website and ad campaign to call for Congressional involvement and lay the blame of licensing battles at the feet of programmers. Its stated mission is to ensure that consumers don’t miss their favorite shows or channels in negotiations for carriage of broadcast programming. (A dispute between Rainbow Media and AT&T is the latest, which may cause U-verse customers to miss the premiere of AMC’s Mad Men on July 25.) Programmers utilize their own on air channels to entice subscribers to demand that their distributors play ball.
Upcoming big screen Marvel Studios adaptations, “Thor” and “Captain America” will be coming at theatergoers in 3D and Marvel is using this year’s Comic-Con convention to convince fanboys that this is the right decision, reports the LA Times. “Thor,” directed by Kenneth Brannagh, is due out May 6, 2011 and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” helmed by Joe Johnson, is scheduled for release on July 22, 2011.

- “Talent” is a talent drama/search show hybrid including an online audition, fan voting, a reality web series and a scripted series. It’s based on a series also by Zoey Dean, with the scripted portion of the web series written by Jessica Kaminsk

Goodway Group‘s Beep! Automotive Ad Network announced it is removing standard “site list” limits that direct customers toward tracks of sites, promising instead to create a custom site list for every automotive brand. The money will be used to purchase equipment including desktop computers, laser printers, high-speed internet access, LCD projectors and technology curriculums.
Arab telecom giant Etisalat announced it will shortly provide educational and entertainment services across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Sudan following the signing of a partnership agreement with Rubicon Group Holding. The joint venture will include the distribution of games, cartoons and apps via mobile, TV and online.
The Media Rating Council (MRC), gave its seal of approval to all 25 of Nielsen‘s Local People Meter markets. As part of the annual audit/accreditation process, the original 10 LPM markets had their accreditation renewed, while the remaining 15 markets were granted accreditation for the first time. The now accredited top-25 markets represent 49% of the population and 64% of local commercial TV ad spend.
Home broadband digital content delivery system XStreamHD has signed a long-term Electronic Sell-Thru and VOD home entertainment distribution agreement with Lionsgate giving the company access to over 12,000 titles to offer for rent or purchase, including the latest HD releases. Bridal magazine web/print publisher The Knot is relying on multiplatform interactive features to sell its latest home-themed print title, The Nest, hitting newsstands for the first time next Monday, July 19. (It was previously offered as an insert for subscribers of the The Knot.) For instance, the print edition will include reader-submitted advice columns culled from web submissions. (TheNest.com will archive UGC content for posterity.) And the mobile WAP site of the magazine will encourage readers to download an application enabling them to scan codes from ads and features they see in print to see what other readers are saying about products in real time. The Knot, which publishes its print editions quarterly, has been careful not to cannibalize its magazines by keeping its features off the website and various mobile apps. (The idea is to utilize each medium for what it’s best at; for instance The Knot’s Wedding Dress app features listings of local salons and the ability to bookmark favorite styles.) But this is more of an example of using one medium to complement the other. Brand advertisers should be keen on participating in such experiments, given the engaging experiences they facilitate.
