THQ and Mattel enter into a multi-year partnership to publish and market video games based on Mattel brands for consoles, handheld game systems, PCs, mobile devices and social networks, as well as game portals including Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and Nintendo WiiWare Network. Under the deal, THQ will develop, produce and distribute videos games based on Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price, as well as build on the interactive opportunities of new properties, such as Monster High, and classic ones such as Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Masters of the Universe, Polly Pocket, among others. Dragon ball Kai, the fourth season in the Dragon Ball series, picks up shortly after Dragon Ball GT ends. Dragon Ball is based on the eponymous Japanese comic by Akira Toriyama. In Canada, Knightscove Media Corp.‘s TV network KnightTV and distribution arm, Knightscove@Home acquires the Canadian broadcast and home video rights to Heathcliff. Knightscove will work with Allen Bohbot of 41 Entertainment on the distribution of Heathcliff in Canada. A new Heathcliff movie is slated for release this year, which will be followed by a new animated series in 2012. It’s still college bowl season as Lou Holtz, an ESPN sportscaster and celebrated Notre Dame football coach, makes a guest appearance on Disney Channel‘s preschool series Special Agent Oso this Friday, January 7 at 10a. In the episode, the Special Agent Oso helps a young boy named Rudy learn how to throw a football before his Uncle Rudy, voiced by Holtz, arrives for a visit. Special Agent Oso stars Sean Astin as the voice of Oso. And for those keeping track, Astin portrayed Notre Dame football player Daniel E. “Rudy” Ruettiger in the movie Rudy (1993). The band My Chemical Romance will make a guest appearance on The Hub‘s original weekly series Hubworld this Friday, January 7, at 6:30p, to promote their album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. Bookseller Barnes & Noble has unveiled a new kid-targeted eBook reader app for the iPad that provide access to some 100 interactive kids’ books including the titles Caps for Sale, Skippyjon Jones and Sheep in a Jeep. Kids can interact with the text and zoom in and around graphics while parents can monitor what titles they can access through a password protected control panel. Barnes & Noble’s general market Nook app for the iPad provides access to some 12,000 kid’s chapter books. Activision Publishing is granted the exclusive worldwide multi-platform video game rights to Blip Toys‘ Squinkies brand. Under the deal Activision will develop, manufacture and distribute video games based on the girl-targeted Squinkies brand and characters for handheld game units, consoles and related platforms, and PC and mobile devices. Slated to debut this year, the first Squinkies video game title will release for Nintendo DS in April 2011. EXECUTIVE MOVES Michael E. Chen is appointed President of NBC News’ Strategic Initiatives Group. He will be responsible for growing the group and will oversee new division properties including Education Nation, the NBC Learn Business, and many of the NBC News digital investments. Most recently, Chen was President and CEO, GE Capital’s Media, Communications & Entertainment business, co-Chair/Peacock Equity Fund and a VP and officer of GE. Mattel names Bryan Stockton, currently President of International, to the new position of COO. He will be responsible for the daily operations of Mattel, including the design, development, marketing and sale of all its toy brands worldwide, as well as licensed entertainment properties, the Mattel Digital Network, and Operations and Corporate Responsibility among other operating functions. Stockton will report to Robert A. Eckert, Chairman and CEO, Mattel, as will Mattel’s Finance, Legal and Human Resources. Additionally, Neil Friedman, President/Mattel Brands will leave the company in March 2011. Robin Agranoff is upped to VP/Programming, Disney Channels. She will continue to mange programming planning and scheduling for the network, the Playhouse Disney programming block (which in February will be rebranded Disney Junior), and ABC Kids. Agranoff will report to Paul DeBenedittis, SVP/Programming Strategy, Disney Channels Worldwide. Agranoff joined Disney Channel in 2005 as Director/Programming Planning and Acquisitions. She toiled for Discovery Kids, ABC TV, and Turner Broadcasting. Robert “Bo” Kaprall is named EVP/Production and Development of The National Theatre for Children (NTC), a Minneapolis, MN based production company. A 30+ year TV veteran, Kaprall has served as an executive producer, director and writer on a range of projects.
